DH FERMANAGH-GOLD Lurker - McKenna - Disappointed Date: Sun, 31 Jan 2016 00:10:13 +1100 I’ve been reading these emails for years. I live in Australia, have been to Ireland 5 times since 2010, but have learned nothing. A few years ago I posted on this site requesting information on my family, but did not draw a single reply. My connection is with Roslea (now Rosslea). There are many McKenna graves in St Tierney’s church yard, many fairly recent, so there is still a family connection in the area. 3. Richard, Considering that the Lakeland Telephone Directory lists over 90 people named McKenna ranging from Newtownbutler to Kesh, a considerable distance. I did not count the entries for the bordering counties to Fermanagh in the section for the Irish Republic there are still a large population carrying the surname around. I don't remember your original post in January but I feel certain you cannot have given enough details of your family in Ireland. Names, dates, Townland, and Parish etc, are very important to any researcher. If the information supplied was what you already had, it would indicate that the places you had searched were not mentioned. That meant that the same ground was ploughed through by the person/persons trying to help you. Information about the family AFTER they left Ireland is not relevant to someone researching Irish records. Do you know the Townland they originated from? If so PRONI have on line the Updated Valuation pages giving the occupier changes between c 1862 to c1925. Before visiting Ireland it is very important to do your homework so that anyone helping you has a foundation to build on. Please do not be offended by any of the above as it applies to dozens of other researchers on this List. F-G is the best and most helpful list on Rootsweb. Members have transcribed more records and provided free of charge access to them through our website, and IGP website. Thank you to those transcribers. Viola

    3. James NAtional Archives Ireland have the whole 1901 and fragments of other census on line. When you find the family you can view the original document by clicking on a link and see the original form with the signature of the head of family. Also available for 1911 which can show how long the couple have been married to the named spouse, how many children born to that union and how many still alive. If you get into difficulty contact me and I'll see if I can help you. Sometimes because the transcribers were not familiar with Irish names or the handwriting some names have been mistranscribed. If you find a mistake there is a link to submit a correction. Viola Sent from my iPad

    3. Cliff, I too have family links back through Tyrone to Kilrea, Coleraine and other places in Londonderry. Trouble with the Derry list is that the admin has it set for replies to go to individuals not to the entire members like FG. I joined the Derry one and unless one clicks reply to all it never appears to the members. I soon Unsubed from that one. We on FG are the very best at working together, helping each other and solving puzzles, even throwing in the off subject item as an aside occasionally. We are a Golden Family and I am proud to be a part of that family. Viola > On 22 Mar 2016, at 21:18, Cliff. 1. Re: FERMANAGH-GOLD Map sources
    2. caiside via
    3. Sharon, Thank you!! Great list. Janet C. ---------------------- There have been several questions about maps lately. Here is mygo-to list for maps (from my web page on Places.). My usual place to start is: Ordnance Survey of Ireland <http://maps.osi.ie/publicviewer/#V1,591271,743300,0> Or else, the maps associated with Griffiths Valuations on the /Ask About Ireland/ Site <http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/>. Mapco has an 1838 map of Ireland <http://ireland1838.com/ireland43.htm>which can be viewed in enlarged segments. For maps of Ireland in the 1650s: The Down Survey of Ireland <http://downsurvey.tcd.ie/history.html> hosted by Trinity College is an amazing site. You can also do a search <http://downsurvey.tcd.ie/down-survey-maps.php> and learn a great deal more about how the early maps relate to later ones. A site that tracks population changes in Irish parishes from 1841 to 2002: Irish Famine Population Data <http://ncg.nuim.ie/redir.php?action=projects/famine/explore> A site that is now one of my go-to places when I want to see adjacent townlands is:http://www.townlands.ie/ <http://www.townlands.ie/> Wikipedia is useful for tracking down varient townland names, as is the Sean Ruad site <http://www.thecore.com/seanruad/>. To track the Irish versions of names that preceded the English version:Placenames Database of Ireland <http://www.logainm.ie/> To track down English, Scots, or Irish place names: Place names in Northern Ireland <http://www.placenamesni.org/index.php> Bob Sinton's townland maps: http://www.bob-sinton.com/maps2/mapsx.php Townlands superimposed on contemporary maps: http://ireland.kiwicelts.com/irishMap/ireMap.html A wonderful site for Monaghan maps is done by Monaghan County <http://193.178.1.178/Monaghan_allcounty_gplan/>. For Dublin, see the 1798 Dublin Map at Mapco: Mapco <http://dublin1798.com/> Another great site is Dennis Garvey's site for parishes and townlands in Co. Louth <http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/%7Edgarvey/louth_townlands.htm>.. <http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/%7Edgarvey/louth_townlands.htm>I also did a blog post that although it is about a townland in Armagh, the same strategy is pertinent for other counties. http://sharonoddiebrown.blogspot.ca/2013/11/the-tale-of-townland.html Good luck all! Sharon
