    2. Dave H via
    3. It makes it easier to trace and find records when the name is a little unusual but also difficult because of the various spellings used The earliest record of this family is found in a list of names of subscribers to a loan raised in 1589, during the reign of Queen Elizabeth, to defray expenses incurred during the arming of the country at the time of the threatened Spanish Armada. The name there appears as Phillips, as it also does in the official list of High Sheriffs for co. Sligo, as , late as 1716, where Mathew Phibbs, of Templevaney, is styled Mathew Phillips. Of this family, two brothers came over to Ireland, as soldiers, about 1590. From records now existing in Trin. Coll. Dublin, they are found on half-pay, 1616 and 1619, under the name of Phipps, a name that some of the younger branches of the family resumed about 1765. Of these two, William settled in co. Cork, in the south-west of which county the name still remains as Ffibbs. DH _____________________________________________________ FERMANAGH-GOLD The name Phibbs Date: Thu, 24 Mar 2016 21:45:29 +1100 A name which was used for three generations in the Cowan family was Phibbs. A Christopher McGregor listed in the 1766 religious census in Drumall had a daughter by Jane Arsdell (1763-1840) named Sidney McGregor (circa 1800-). She married Robert Cowan (1777-1836) and they had a son named Phibbs Alexander Cowan born at Clonkeen. Phibbs Alexander Cowan migrated to Australia in 1854. He settled near Wollongong and purchased land at Broughton Creek. Phibbs married Mary Jane James (1835 - 1889) and they had a son named Charles Phibbs Alexander Cowan (1869 - 1942). He died in Port Kembla. Makes it interesting when you see the same name go through generations. Also of course makes it easier to trace and find records when the name is a little unusual. 3. Hi, I wonder if anyone can help. I am trying to find any trace of an inquest / Post mortem for a SERGEANT ISAAC STEWART R.U.C who drowned in the River Derg on July 21 1943. He lived at Main Street Castle Derg but came originally from Dungiven where he was taken back to be buried. I have found 2 Newspaper reports for his son, my husband's 2nd cousin, but he has been trying to find any further info.Any help much appreciated. 3. Richard, Please post details of who you are looking for, and what you know already. What is the furthest back person that you are sure of (or even pretty sure)? Give us names and dates for the person who left Ireland for Australia. When was he/she was born and where? (Even a guess on the date is helpful.) How did they get to Australia (convict or assisted immigrant)? When? If a husband and wife came together, did they bring children? Ages? Don't give us details about descendants in Australia, that doesn't help us go backwards. Did you obtain the passenger arrival (ship list) for that voyage? What religion were they? What records have you already looked at for Ireland? Census? Church records--which ones? There's a lot that can be done without setting foot in Ireland. People on this list are very helpful. And new people are always joining, so it doesn't hurt to repeat your questions every 4-5 months or so. Janet C. ------------- May I thank the people who responded to my posting of late January. Unfortunately, all suggested courses of action have already been followed, and nothing has been gained from them. As I stated, we live in Australia and have visited Ireland five times. We spent a lot of time in Roslea and Monaghan Town, with some stays up to 7 days. It's a long haul from here to Ireland, and we accept that our next visit may well be our last. Age and health must be taken into account. My wish was that someone from the Roslea/Clones/Monaghan Town area who was researching the McKenna family would reply to my posting. I am disappointed to reveal that such was not the case. Many headstones/gravestones in the cemetery beside the lovely St Tierney's Church prove that a strong McKenna connection still exists in the area. Your honour, I rest my case.
