Today our FFHG are having a Show and Tell celebration of our research in connection with an article relating to our family history. I am taking a watch and lanyard chain which was presented to my Gt Aunt Isa Clarke on her retirement in May 1914. In just over a month that watch will be 102 years old and is still working. After Isa's death my Grandmother Clarke wore it daily and on many occasions I was allowed to wind it for her. It was only given 7 winds each night. When I took it from my "Treasure Chest last night, the memories came flooding back. I could see my Grandmother smiling at me. So I wound the watch 7 times and set it to time and it is still going this morning. What a great treasure to have! Viola Sent from my iPad
I visited Manorhamilton last September motivated by a baptism record for Robert Maguire(b abt 1845) son of Andrew Maguire (b abt 1819) and Rebecca (b abt 1822). Andrew and Rebecca were my second great grandparents. Other records in Boston indicate Rebecca was the daughter of Robert McKee and Margaret Stevenson. Robert would have been my Great Grandfather's older brother. Wendy from the Manorhamilton parish, who posts here, was very kind during my visit and went out of here way to allow me access to the old church (COI) in Manorhamilton, where Robert's baptism took place. There were many Stevensons in the Manorhamilton area and Wendy also generously shared information on her family genealogy . The only solid leads to the Maguire's who arrived in Boston come from the COI baptism record and a strong Y-DNA link to Carl Maguire who traced his family to just over the Leitrim border. The Maguire's joined a Church of Ireland parish in the Jamaica Plain section of Boston. My great grandfather, Andrew John Maguire, married Susan Walker of Donegal in Boston. They joined the Methodist Episcopal church probably because Susan was raised Methodist in Donegal. Another highlight of my Ireland trip was finding the Walker's abandoned seaside farm in Donegal and the house Thant my second great grandfather Arcibald Walker had built there. Always looking for mores clue as to my Irish Maguire's. Stephen J. Viola, I sure agree with Patricia! WRT treasures, my idea is to share our treasures with our broader family. I try to show my children and nephews the memorabilia I have- most of us have it in drawers, closets, garages, boxes in the basement etc. My father had tags on some objects but not all. Wish I knew more. e.g. whose locket is it for sure, and who gave it to my father? My project which is progressing very slowly, is to photograph objects, as well as to sort and label them. That way I can share them with cousins. When I visit them, I try to photograph what they have. You do have to be prepared for a rebuff now and again. ????"Our family didn't get anything." When writing an article for family, I can attach a photographed object. e.g. the riding crop my grandfather is holding in a WWI photo. All that being said, I am not very far along in this project. I need to write a story, as Vi just did, about each object and to write about my genealogy finds. Dear Vi, Your heirloom watch is indeed a wonderful treasure to have, but from my standpoint you are the incomparable treasure to all of us Fermanagh golders. I love your memories that you so generously share with us. You have given me a sense of life in Northern Ireland that nothing else could have done. Thank you! Anne About 65 years ago I knew a John Ross who worked in a shop in Blacklion. He later had a cycle repair shed at Letterbreen. That would be about 1946/7. From there he took over the running of a Public House in Fivemiletown around the late 1940s and was still there in 1955 when I went to live in Yorkshire. There is only one Ross listed for Fivemiletown which I guess could be John's son? I will send it to you off list Viola
Hi Dave. Interesting to see the rate value for the house and Armagh at £800 which would probably equal about $1300, with no breakdown of the charges. Here I get 2 bills every quarter, one for council rates which covers the garbage collection, 3 bins, waste, green garden recycling, and paper and metal recycling. Collected once a week. And community services, roads libraries et cetera. Yearly cost $1300. The other bill is for water and sewerage, water is charged for usage, sewerage is a fixed rate yearly cost about $800. I'd say you'll winning.:-) Ken On 14/04/2016 8:47 PM, [email protected] via wrote: > So here in Fermanagh, every property has recently received a rates bill or > will shortly be getting one. I am just becoming familiar with my great grandmother's Ross family from Leitrim. Isabella Ross (1850-1906) may have had a brother named Hugh Ross who was attached to the army in India as a teacher. Hello, I have just returned from a trip to Australia and while searching for relatives of my husband we found a headstone for a John Elliott a native of Knockadoois, Fermanagh. He died July 5,1906 and his wife Catherine Ivey died April 28,1933. They are buried in the Carlyle Cemetery in Rutherglen, Victoria. I have a photo of the headstone if anyone interested. The headstone was erected by John Artis Elliott who married Bridget Lee of Bundalong. Hope this help someone. I believe it is in the Catholic section of the cemetery. Bev

Hi I just found the link to the petition https://www.change.org/search?q=The%20Parramatta%20Female%20Factory
Have given everything I have on them, married St Mary's Presbyterian Church, Toronto the marriage of Thomas Hall, (Irish) age 23, to Eliza Jane Stewart, (Irish) age 24, at St Mary's Presbyterian Church, Toronto on 15 January 1858, http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~maryc/presby58.htm (Correct Parents, Townland) PLUS http://bowergenealogy.ca/resources/methodist/Names%20H1.htm That is all I have!! Married Toronto, 9 months later the baptism!! So... I know I often ask "Religion", in this case it does make sense that a Methodist Minister bapt child, Thomas' mother was d/o of Methodist Minister. Carl looked for them on Census, no luck, as have several others, they would have been same age (+/_1) !! Rather than use people's time looking for them, as I've searched and searched, as have a few others, at this stage I've run out of ideas! The map of Cumberland, 15 years later, has very few names on it, not theirs though! He didn't have any kin in Canada. No point in looking at Canada G/stone Project... been through that Cemetery by Cemetery. 1 John Lyons Hall, wrong dates, wrong parents!! Given that I have so little, should I just write them off? Vicki the petition about the Parramatta Factory doesn't come up on that link. If this signature is not met Developers will take over and the area will be lost to the public except for a privilege few who will be able to buy the homes they build.Myself I have three ancestors connected to the Factory - or I should say jail. The place was used to make a material called I think the Parramatta that was a material used for morning by Queen Victoria. But like most factories who's workers could go home these women would have to stay and sleep next to there work. Their children were often taken off them especially if they had more then two or as they got older. The Factory term for many who know the place is more referred to a marriage factory. Men would come in and choose a wife and within that day they are marriage. Many girls took marriages that ended up terrible just because they thought they would get fr! eedom. (Just add many men who wanted a break from their wifes could send them to the factory till they felt they wanted to get them back.) There is a lot more stories which can be found when reading the history of the Factory where many felt death was a better option then to go there. They write in history papers how bad these women were. Well I do not believe they were all bad, many did quite well for themselves and families in a hostile Colony. They deserve to be remembered like those in Tasmania are. Why I ask you oversea's who are into family history is because you have the passion and just maybe know of a female in your family who because of the times was transported to this far away place.I hope you will all help and send it on if you can to others. > Thank youVicki Barnett > > > > > > Declare the Parramatta Female Factory a national and world heritage site > | | > | | | | | | | | > | Declare the Parramatta Female Factory a national and wor...The Parramatta Female Factory is currently at risk!
