First, I'd like to thank those people who have contacted me re my gravestone query and I will get back to you. My computer crashed and had to go to the technicians and once I got it back I had begun to work on something which is taking a lot of time. My web site began so that I could show those who had expressed an interest in a journal which I proposed publishing what I would have in the journal. However, the whole concept of the web site has now changed. Four or five years ago, I became very interested in surnames and placenames. I am not researching my own family but it was the thought of where the names were found in a county and the fact that the spellings can be different from county to county and even when we go to the General Registrar's Office we can see the way a name was spelled a hundred years ago in one part of the country being spelled differently in another part - phonetics.....and then over time, we see the name reaching a stage where it has one spelling. You can track people through the birth, marriage and death records - follow the naem through the country - see connections between one county and another. Then, when you look at the literature - you can find names in one part of the country at one time and then in another another time - moving about.I have been working with names and sorting them since that time, using anything and everything I can get my hands on or that I transcribe. My web site has now become or is becoming somwhere that I can show you what information I have and the source I got it from. I am focusing on Graveyards, Journals, and names - surname distribution I have begun to load some names to my web site - approximately 1000 for Cavan, Carlow, Laois, Monaghan, Limerick and Kilkenny so far. I give a list of names and a year and on the page I list the references I have used to present my lists of names. in some instances I have not given the full and proper reference because I have not got it at the moment, but that will be corrected next week. It is my intention to load 1000 names and references for each county over the next while, it's not the finding of the names that is a problem for me, it is the time it takes to create each page. My pages are not necessarily perfect - but I have only just begun to learn how to create web pages. The Carlow list of surnames was the first I created, in time I will go back and change the format on that one - once I have finished every county. I hope to have that done within two weeks, after that - I will begin on placenames and then after that adding another 1000 names to each list.
