Hello all, I'm new to this list and on the trail of a truly international mystery. There is a story in my family that my great great great grandmother was a ward of the Governor of Jamaica who disapproved of the British Soldier she chose to marry, so she ran away and married him anyway. The same family story says she was French. Her name was Catherine Revenell, and her death certificate from 1904 in New Zealand says she was born in Ireland in 1815, and that her father was a Tailor. She married Scottish born, Bernard Holland in Jamaica in 1830 and by 1834 was in England. As far as I can ascertain, the Governor of Jamaica between 1828 and 1832 was the Second Earl of Belmore, Somerset Lowry-Corry, of Fermanagh, Ireland. This fits with Catherine's Irish birth, but why she would be a ward of Somerset Lowry-Corry is a mystery. Can anybody help with idea's about where I might go to locate any information. I am guessing that a good place to start would be Somerset Lowry-Corry's relationships - perhaps Catherine was a niece or cousin of Somerset's wife, or she may have been the illegitimate daughter of a member of his family. Any idea's about sources of information would be gratefully received. I have tried Jamaican records and mailing lists without luck so far, so I feel the best place to look now is Ireland. Any assistance or comments appreciated. Kind regards Maureen Donwen New Zealand
