Aas of 1968, the MaCaffreys are Fermangh's sixth family today, commandeing 339 votes. They descend from Gafraigh, a son of Don Carrach, the first Maguire King of Fermanagh. . Their headquarters, in Maguire times was at Ballymacaffrey, near Fivemiletown. They figure frequently in the Anuals and took part in many raids. They gave their name to Legmacaffry in Galloon parish and Rossmacaffry in Aghalurcher. After the Williamite wars, some of the McCaffreys may have become Protestant. We find eight of them on the Register in 1788. Murtagh McCaffrey lost 3& in Enniskillen fire in 1707. The 1796 List gives McCaffreys all over the county, particularly in Lurg anf Magherasteffany.
