First: thank you for going to the trouble to type out all of these, and to send them to the list. I am also interested in HETHERINGTON in Fermanagh, with mine coming from nearby Derryvullen parish. On your question about "Kel" or "Ket" HETHERINGTON, here are some thoughts; based on HETHERINGTON forenames in Derryvullan. 1: My strongest suspicion is that it might be an abbreviation for "Ralph" (a spoken contraction often sounding like "Rally"). 2. Next possible contender might be "Henry" (often abbreviated to "Hry") 3. Others, just for the record, although they seem less likely to fit in with a "Kel/t" transcription might be: Hugh, Matthew, Robert, Francis, & Christopher (often abbreviated to "Christy"). Hello Listers! Recently, I requested and recieved a copy of this document from the Latter Day Saints Family History Library in Salt Lake City, Utah. I was overjoyed to see my HETHERINGTON family listed in Glencoonra and thought others on the list could benefit if I shared what is found on the psuedo-census for 1863/4 taken by the Rector of Aghalurcher. It's several pages long, so I'll distribute it over several e-mails. Part 1 can be found below. I also have some questions about it - perhaps someone a little more knowledgeable than I has the answers? 1. What was the purpose of the Protestant Registry? 2. A few of the families have comments like "careless" and "hopeful" beside them. Does this have something to do with church attendance or their commitment to the Church? 3. Why would the Rector of Aghalurcher compile the registry for the parish of Magheracross? Was there no rector for Magheracross? Happy Hunting! Lynda P.S. I'm having problems with the letter "t" on my keyboard. Please forgive any typos I may have missed when I ran spell-check :) -------------------------------------------- Protestant Registry of the Parish of Magheracross as visited from house to house by William Smyth BURNSIDE in the year 1863 LDS FHL British 941.68/M2 X29bw Photocopy of pages. W. S. Burnside, DD Rector of Aghalurcher September 1st 1871" Photocopy of article from the Daily Express, dated Augt. 1878 TO THE EDITOR OF THE DAILY EXPRESS SIR - The moderate and sensible letter of "X," in a recent issue of the Express [ital.], escaped my notice, although I am a constant reader of the paper. A friend has kindly called my attention to it. I mention this as my apology of "X" for not having taken an earlier notice of this interesting inquiry. I regret to say that I cannot obtain any documentary evidence. There are not any registers earlier than the close of the last cen- tury belonging to the church of Aghalurcher. We must rely on tradition, and when tradition is recent and vouched by competent and veracious witnesses, it ought to be considered satisfactory. The three grounds on which I rely that James SIMONTON did actually attain to the age of 114 are these: 1. His established character for truthfulness; he constantly affirmed that he was married when 39 years old. This has been known, I believe, by his family for 60 years. His eldest son is well known to be 75 years of age; indeed in his appearance he looks older than his father looked a few months ago. These two sums of years make 114. 2. James SIMONTON constantly affirmed that he was personally acquainted with Sir Arthur BROOKE, Bart, who died in 1784; that he carried turf to Cole- brook House for Sir Arthur some years before his death; that as it were at that time no carts nor wheel cars in use, owing to the bad state of the road, the turf was carried in creels on the backs of horses, and that no lad under sixteen had charge of a horse, because he should be strong enough to take off from the horses' back one creel, at the same time that one of the labourers employed at building the turf stack took off the other, it being necessary that both creels (to preserve the equilibrium) should be removed at the same time. If, then, he was 16 in 1780, he must have reached 114 in 1878. 3. When James SIMONTON (as was well known) was above 80 years -he was a strong, active man-and could accomplish his part of the daily work, in company with young and able men, quite as well as they did. This circumstances [sic] attracted the notice of all who knew him; his years from this time forward were marked, and as he approached 100 years he was observed with still greater interest, so that he became a remarkable man, and his age has formed a prominent topic of conversation amongst his neighbours for the last 20 years; and their unanimous conviction is that his age, as stated, is cor- rect-some being of the opinion that it is underrated at 114. I have known him for 41 years.-I am, &c, W. S. BURNSIDE, D.D., Rector of Aghalurcher Photocopy of article from the Daily Express, dated July 30 1878 TO THE EDITOR OF THE DAILY EXPRESS SIR - I send you a short account of an extraordinary case of longevity. James SIMONTON, a tenant on the Colebrooke estate, in the parish of Aghalurcher, died on the 26th instant, aged 114. He was personally acquainted with six generations of the Colebrooke family. He married when he was 39 years old. He had several children the eldest is now 75. He was a strong, well-made man of medium height. He always enjoyed excellent health. He was strictly temperate. He did not smoke. He had a calm and easy temper. His mind was quiet, free from emotion. He diligently received the Holy Scripture. Up to very lately he constantly attended the evening service of the Church held in a schoolhouse adjacent to his residence. He was a truly Christian man. He delighted in prayer. He was a most kind, sympathising, and useful neigh- bour. He had much still in rural attains. He enjoyed life till within a few hours of his decease. He was a great walker and an early riser. He had all of his facul- ties to the last. His skin was fresh and fair, without a wrinkle. His appetite was small, and his food was that of the simplest kind. He always had the appearance of a well nourished man, rather inclined to corpulency.-I am, yours, &c, W. S. BURNSIDE, D.D., Rector of Aghalurcher

Each of us has, on our computers, a little box that we check to make sure that senders of messages are not automatically placed in our address book. It stops us from using up valuable space in our files and storage. Fermanagh-L has an archive that stores messages. It does not have that little box to keep unwanted replies out of the archives. I just discovered that my 4x great grandparents, Patrick Meehan, and his wife, Mary O'Reilly, came from County Fermanagh, Ireland to Huntingdon, Canada probably around 1840. With them came their 5 children, Bernard Meehan (my grt grt grt grandfather), Mary, Patrick, Myles and Barbara. Bernard Meehan married Susan McHugh who I understand, also, came from County Fermanagh. I think Bernard was born around 1815, Mary 1808 & Myles about 1810. I was hoping someone may have some information on them or may be able to give me some hints as to researching ancestors from Ireland. Thank you, Terri
