    1. CAROLAN
    2. Hello everyone and thank everyone who contacted me to see when I am returning to the site. My new e-mail address is maureenbatty1@btinternet.com. Back to the subject Carolan...if the information given is correct then I have a great uncle that I didn't know about. Bernard Carolan and Mary Ann Lynch were married on November 1st 1878 and were my g. grandparents. Bernard's parents were Michael Carolan and Mary Mulligan and Mary Ann's father was Luke Lynch. I have no record of a son FRANCIS BUT it is quite possible that he is theirs as the first record I have is of Michael born in 1881 followed by twins Mary and Hugh in 1884 . Luke 1886. Cassie 1888 Margaret [my grandmother] 1891. I do understand the Carrol/Carolan surnames as according to my mother the family were known by both spellings? also Carlin and Carlan. I have these 2 on various certs.. It could also make sense the name Francis as first son but not perfect sense as there does appear to be a strong relationship here to the naming patterns but then Francis was a popular name in the Lynch family and I have not been able to clarify who LUKE'S father was. Hope this has been of some help but I would say it would be one big coincidence to find 2 Bernard Carolan's and Mary Ann Lynch marriages and it always struck me as a bit strange that their first child Michael didn't arrive until 3 yrs after the marriage and I do have that marriage certificate. Mind you if you are correct then FRANCIS just sneaked in within the reguired 9 months??? Maureen

    3. Bud, Anything is possible with Rootsweb. They do allow multiple lists with the same name and de-limiters. They do stipulate that it not become too excessive. Most probably new subscribers would not subscribe to all Fermanagh lists. They would pick FERMANAGH-L list only as being the primary logical list. I have not seen much email on this list to warrant additional lists though. I have each FERMANAGH email automatically deposited into a "Fermanagh" folder in Outlook Express. Then when I get time, usually on weekends, I catch up with my genealogy folder reading. This may be more of an issue due to FERMANAGH-GOLD-L . For some reason, that illogically named list has become a very busy list. So much so that I had to unsubscribe from it. Bill Barber, in New Hampshire

    3. I have recently rejoined this wonderful list after taking a break from family history for a while. Last time I listed my Burley family I made some wonderful contacts. Unfortunately, over the years I have lost their contact details. I am hoping that perhaps they are still listers or that new connections might have joined. My Burley Family starts at William Burley and his wife Mary Campbell. They lived around Bunlougher, Fermanagh in th 1820s when their children were born. This is my information on them: Name: William Burley ---------------------------------------- Spouse: Mary Campbell ---------------------------------------- Birth: 1796 Death: 1864 Lestersees, Ireland Children: ---------------------------------------- 1 M: James Liney BURLEY Birth: 1825 Aghavea, Fermanagh, Ireland Death: 13 Jun 1894 Sale, Australia Spouse: Rachel Johnston Marriage: 21 Jun 1850 Cleenish, Fermanagh, Ireland ---------------------------------------- 2 M: John Burley Birth: 1826 Aghavea, Fermanagh, Ireland Death: 20 Jan 1864 Chewton, Victoria, Australia Spouse: Jane Watkins Marriage: 1854 Fermanagh, Ireland ---------------------------------------- 3 M: Henry Burley Birth: 13 Jan 1828 Bunlougher, Aghavea, Fermanagh, Ireland Death: 27 Mar 1881 Rochester, Victoria, Australia Spouse: Ann Montgomery Marriage: 1860 Castlemaine, Victoria, Australia ---------------------------------------- 4 F: Margaret Burley Birth: 1 Nov 1829 Bunlougher, Aghavea, Fermanagh, Ireland ---------------------------------------- 5 M: Andrew Burley Birth: 25 Nov 1831 ---------------------------------------- 6 M: Robert BURLEY Birth: 1836 Fermanagh, Ireland Death: 22 Sep 1898 Fermanagh, Ireland ---------------------------------------- 7 M: Johnston BURLEY Birth: 26 Feb 1836 Aghavea, Fermanagh, Ireland Death: 1920 Maffra, Victoria, Australia Spouse: Mary Ann DONOHUE Marriage: 28 Jan 1885 Sale, Australia Spouse: Jane Kay AUBREY Marriage: 25 Mar 1878 ---------------------------------------- 8 M: Thomas BURLEY Birth: 17 Jun 1838 Bunlougher, Fermanagh,,Ireland Death: 5 Mar 1910 Aghavea, Fermanah, , Ireland Spouse: Faitnic ---------------------------------------- 9 M: William BURLEY Spouse: Annie TRIMBLE Also, I need some advice from all those knowledgeable listers out there. I would like to know the best way to gain access to a marriage record. The marriage I am after was between William Burleigh/Burley and Mary Campbell 1820 Diocese Of Clogher, Ulster Province, Ireland. This information was obtained from the IGI but had been sumitted so there was no film number to order in. If any listers have relatives who came to Australia, I am happy to try and help find out what happened to them when they got here. I have BMD resources, mostly for Victoria and South Australia but a few for the other states as well. Many thanks in Advance Linda in Sunny Sunbury, Victoria, Australia

    3. "The Book of Ulster Surnames", by Robert Bell page 130/131 In Ulster, the name derived from the Mac Amhlaoibh sept whose name, like that of the Lewis MacAulays, derived from the Gaelic form of the Norse name 'Olaf". These are the descendents of Auley, a son of Donn Carrach Maguire, the first Maguire King of Fermanagh who died in 1302. It is thought that it was this Auley and his sons who first crossed the Erne and won south Fermanagh for the Maguires. The sept gave it's name to Clanawley. The name in Fermanagh is mainly spelt MacCawley or Macgawley and Magawley. Chers Bud Flanagan, in Arizona

    1. You actually have a copy of the marriage record? Re: [FERMANAGH] Whiteside/Stewart
    2. Dr. Jane Lyons
    3. Kathleen, I've never yet seen a copy of a marriage entry in any Irish book that didn't have the couple's signature on it - let alone some information on the father of each. You have a photocopy of the mariage record with no information as to father's and it wasn't signed by the couple. Were there names for the Witnesses. Sorry for asking............I don't know anything about these people..............but no signatures and no father information - it's just so strange.
