    3. I have seen the LDS reel for the Hearth Rolls and would not recomend them to anyone. They only listed the surname (sometimes initial) in a county; there is no way of pinning down a closer geographic connection than the county which means that you already knew your people were in that county to have been looking there. I also rented a census of Fermanagh (1821?) which listed 90 families from a population of approximately 25,000. If your names happen to be among the 90 you are home free but it is not a very good way to invest your money. Don Holmes donaldh@golden.net Ontario

    1. rents and leases
    2. I am looking at a list of names of people who were applying for Registry (to vote) at Enniskillen in 1839. (This is copied from a Fermanagh newspaper, btw) In the first column it gives the name, description and residence. The 2nd column is headed "On what right claiming", referring to claiming the right to vote, I guess. However, there are different categories listed in this second column, for instance: Rentcharger, Leaseholder, and Freeholder. My question: what is the difference between a Rentcharger and a Leaseholder? I thought to vote you needed to own land worth 10 pounds or more. (There is another column for value of land.) So is a Leaseholder someone who is leasing to another? Then what is the difference between leasing and charging rent? Anyone know? Janet C-S

    3. I have noted that the "Spinning Wheel Premium List" for County Sligo, dated 1798? is available thru LDS microfilm from Salt Lake City. This is listed on the GenConnect Page at: http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Parthenon/5327/sligo/sligomr.htm Does Fermanagh have a GenConnect Web Page? They also list Penders Census of Ireland dated 1659 as Microfilm 925648 and the Hearth Money Rolls of 1665 (@Irish Manuscripts Commission, 1967). Haven't had any experience with these lists.

    2. JIM SWINDELL
    3. Hi everybody, I've been reading the List for some time. I guess its time for me to jump in. My great grandfather Francis SWINDLE,of Cushrush Island, parish of Killesher, married Mary Anne LITTLE,of Carnagilta,on July 26,1854,in Tempo Church of Ireland, parish of Enniskillen.Family information indicates that Francis had a brother,John SWINDLE, who lived at Attybaron, parish of Aghalurcher.(only information I have about John). Mary Anne LITTLE had four brothers:Samuel,John,James and Robert, and a sister .(I have no information about anyone except Robert). Robert LITTLE resided at Cushwash Mills, parish of Aghalurcher. I know Francis and Mary Anne SWINDLE had one son,my grandfather,Francis SWINDLE,b.June 1856,d.December 1921,buried in Aghavea Cemetery in Brookborough Town. I'm seeking birth and death information for Francis and Mary Anne SWINDLE. I also want to know if Francis SWINDLE ,my grandfather, had any siblings. Does anyone have information that can help me fill in the blanks? Jim Swindell

    1. Communicating your info
    2. Dear Listers: PLEASE remember to use a useful subject line! AND please repeat the surnames in the body of the note as well. If you put names and dates ONLY in the subject line and then don't repeat it in the body, it makes it harder to read for people in Digest format. So what, you ask? Well, do you really want someone to miss something, esp if the person who missed it happens to have your family info? Good communications is the whole point, right? Janet C-S

    1. Spanish Blood, Elliott,Bell

    3. I posted my ancestors earlier and made a mistake on a date of birth, so will repeat in brief: Jeremiah Elliott b 1780 (Said 1880 before!!) and his wife Ann Trotter b 1782 left Ireland for Quebec abt 1835/36. They brought their grown children and grandchildren. Arthur & Eleanor Bothwell Elliott were from Enniskillen the rest we don't know, but most likely the same place. George and Mary Bell also were married before with one child Wiloliam andrew b. 23 Aug 1834. These were my line. 5 Bothwell's married 5 Elliott's so if we find one we will find the other. One was married before coming. 2 Bell's married 2 Elliott's and one was married before they came. Although Arthur's Biography says they are from Enniskillen, I have some of the children of Jeremiah and Ann Trotter being born in Armagh, Antrim, Ulster and Fermanagh. So, maybe they moved around. Ledgend has it that we had "Spanish Blood" and were "Black Irish". Our grandfather's line happened to have dark hair and a look different than what you would think and Irish person would have. I would like to hear from any of you that have such a history. Sorry for the earlier error. Thank you for your wonderful information and comments. They would have been >Scottish I would imagine. How long would the Scottish people have been >in Ireland. > >We were said to have had "Spanish Blood" How might this have happened. >Were there Spanish people living in Fermanagh at that time? >............ Many Irishmen exiled themselves to the French and Spanish armies of Europe in the 1700s. That's one possibility. Not sure if any Scottish families did the same though. Some will say the Spanish blood came from the shipwrecked sailors of the failed invasion, but the few survivors were in a big hurry to get back home and I don't believe more than a handful remained in Ireland. Description of Enniskillen in 1837 is being sent by separate post. For more complete history of Fermanagh, try to find a copy of "The Fermanagh Story", by Peadar Livingstone. Scottish and English settlers were brought in to displace the Irish during the Plantation period of the mid 1600s, and maybe there were earlier settler programs. 3. I assume you meant Jeremiah Elliott was born abt 1780, not 1880. I have many Elliots listed in my Dundas files and one Trotter. I have 2 Elliotts listed in my McBriens file. No Bells or Bothwell. John Trotter married Margaret Dundas 27 July 1809 Parish of Inishmacsaint Mary Jane Elliot m. Robert Dundas of Manger 13 Oct. 1892 Irvinestown Presbyterinan, Par. Derryvullan Elizabeth Elliot m. James Dundas of Manger 31 Dec. 1903 Parish of Inishmacsaint, Slavin Church, her father was John Elliot Annie Elliot m. Francis James Dundas 29 Oct. 1919 Parish of Inishmacsaint, He was the son of Moses Dundas and Sarah Young Phoebe Catherine Elliot m. Arthur Dndas 18 Feb. 1875 Parish of Devenish, Monea Church Christian Elliott m. Robert McBrine befor 1836 and lived at Ardees, had daughter Elizabeth28 Dec. 1806 Rowline Elliott m. Mary McBrine and lived at Upper Ardees and had son, John Elliott, born 26 Sept 1802. Yes, they were predominantly Scots who came in the Plantation of Ireland which started in 1608. In W.C. Trimble's book "Trimble's History of Enniskillen", pub. Wm. Trimble, 1919, pg. 200, he said: "Fermanagh was largely planted with moss-troopers from the Scottish border men used to fighting and cattle reiving; a tradition hath it that they were specially selected by reason of their training, to form a rampart against the Connaught border. Thus it is that we find Johnstons of Annandale in such profusion in the county, the Armstrongs, Elliots, Beattys (Beattock) in Dumfries, the Scotts, Nixons, Kirkpatricks, Grahams, Creightons, Maxwells, Moffetts, etc. Other Scotch names like those of Morrison, Campbell, Dundas, Cathcart, Mitchell, Gregg. Murray, Henderson, Irvine, Stewart will be found in the Muster Roll." That would imply that the Elliot surname came from Dumfries, Ayrshire, Scotland. Page 205-6 shows the Muster Roll of Fermanagh in 1630 and includes a Mortin Ellot and Thomas Trotter, Sword only, a Francis Trotter, Sword and Pike and a Rynyon Bell with "no armes". Actually, the summary of names in the Muster Lists included 33 Ellots, 6 Bells and 5 Trotters. That's all I have. Check the LDS microfilm 0258520 and Records at Enniskillen Town Hall as well as PRO in Belfast. -----Original Message----- From: Bonnie & Merv Robillard [mailto:b.robillard@sk.sympatico.ca] Sent: Thursday, March 11, 1999 12:06 PM To: FERMANAGH-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Elliott-Trotter-Bell >From Enniskillen.
