    1. CRAIG Family... New to List
    2. I am a new subscriber to the Fermanagh List and would like to post my interests as well as ask a question to the those of you who have more experience in this area. William (1750-1836) and Mary (Gamble) CRAIG (1752-1856) were Protestant Ulster Scots who had six known children, all presumably born in the Fermanagh area. The family emigrated in, I believe, three groups, between 1822 and 1824 to western Pennsylvania, settling in Indiana and Allegheny counties there. Because of their ages at the times of their migrations, I believe that all of the marriages took place in Ireland, but I can not confirm this. 1) John, born 18 May 1790, and who married Elizabeth LIGGETT. 2) Ann, born 10 August 1792, who married William (or David) JOHNSTON. 3) Margaret, born 10 February 1795, and who married James CAMPBELL. 4) Patrick, born 24 August 1796, and who married __ ROBINSON. 5) Hugh, born 12 August 1799, and who married Barbara RAMSEY. 6) William, born 10 April 1803, nothing further known. We believe they lived in the following possible area: Loutherstown, Townland of Lurgin (or Lurg), County Fermanagh, Ireland I understand that Craig is not a Fermanagh name, having Scottish origins, and that the family may have been planters, and probably not land owners. I had previously (and erroneously) been searching in the Antrim area for this family, however new evidence leads me here. I have been told that the town, Loutherstown, had been changed to Irvinestown, and that there is a Barony of Lurg in County Fermanagh which is between Kesh and Pettigoe (west of Irvinestown). Some of the other surnames associated with this family are: Pettigrew, Patterson, Devlin, Sharp, Shirley, Shields, Speedy and many others. Might anyone on the list have knowledge of this CRAIG family? Also, could anyone lead me to where I might learn more about Loutherstown (Irvinestown) so that I may make further inquiries on this family? Thank you for your time and consideration, Lynnette Burge Researching CAMBPELL and CRAIG http://members.aol.com/lynburge

MAP OF THE SEIGE, 1593-4 The quaint map of the Seige on Enniskillen Castle, drawn by John THOMAS, soldier, is here given by kind permission of Mr. BIGGAR, Editor od U.J.A. The following notes are taken from Lord BELMORE'S article referred to on page 3. The old map shows that, as might have been expected in the month of Febuary the "Broad Meadow" to the south of the town was under water as well as "Castle" or "Sally" island. The passage to :bellyke" {Beleek.} is drawn in rather too westerly a dircetion. The Castle is where the Castle Barracks now stands. Its ditch as well as the other marked : a dyche cutt" have both been filled up. The island formed by the latter with a hut upon it corresponds with the Main Barracks and Barrack yard. The existing West Bridge is nearly opposite the spot where the words "Three Falcons" and "Musketeres" are marked on the island. Capt. BINGHAM and his camps are on the top of the hill where stands the Military Hospital. His Musketeres, Robonet and Fawkon are firing across the Sligo road. The island at the bottom of the map is "Cherry" or "Piper's" island. The Scale is about the site of the workhouse. "The Governors Battle " is on the Fort Hill, and "Governor Dowdall's campe" is lower down between the Fort Hill and Mill Street. The points of the compass are reversed, the South being at the Top. Robonet-An ancient military machine for throwing darts and stones,-Imperial Dictionary. Falcon= An ancient kind of light cannon.-Historical Dict. Musket=A musket is the male od the sparrowhawk, early firearms beibg often named from birds of prey.- It is curious that on the Map od 1657 the name Enniskillen does not appear, but "Killmalo." is written across the island. Mrs.CROOK, formerly SEXTONESS, told one of the family{about 1876-7.} that she had seen the coffin of Paul Dane the Provost in the Dane vault, which was closed when the present church was built. An item about Ollamh Fodhla, (#48) from the Heremon genealogies; 39. EITHRIAL; 11th Monarch Slain 165O B.C. at the battle of Soirrean. 4O. FOLL-AICH; Denied the Monarchy by Conmaol, slayer of his father. 41. TIGERNMAS; 13th Monarch D. 1543 B.C. Reigned 5O yrs. He won 27 battles against the followers of Heber Fionn. He set up and worshipped the idol "Crom Cruach", in Co. Leitrim. He introduced rank distinction by the wearing of coulours. One for a slave, three for a soldier or young lord, six for a chief professor of the liberal arts, and that of a King or Queen. Possibly the origin of the Scotch plaid. 42. ENBOATH; Divided the Kingdom by a line from Drogheda to Limerick. 43. SMIOMGHALL; In his lifetime the Picts in Scotland were forced to abide by their oath, and pay homage to the Irish Monarch. 44. FIACHA LABHRAINN; 18th Monarch Slain 1448 B.C. at battle of Bealgadain. 45. AONGUS OLMUCACH; 2Oth Monarch Slain 14O9 B.C. At the battle of Carman. He went into Scotland with a strong army and fought 3O battles to again force Scotland to pay tribute. 46. MAIN; In his liftime, Ireland was already a settled Kingdom, holding a definite place in the world of letters, and far advanced in the arts of civilized life. 47. ROTHEACHTACH; 22nd Monarch Slain 1357 BC. by Sedne, of the line of Ir. 48. DEIN; Denied the Monarchy by Sedne. Gold necklaces first worn by nobles. The Monarch of these times was OLLAMH FODHLA, pronounced "Ollav Fola". He was celebrated as a philosophical statesman, for his improvements in the science of government, and for the mild and enlightened principles of his policy. He instituted an assembly resembling modern parliments that convened every three years. The poet-historians from all the provinces related all that had happened between assemblies. It was during these assemblies that family genealogies were carefully examined, corrected, and then entered in the national records kept at Tara. These records were of great importance because a man's right of inheritance to property depended on his genealogy. These records were ordered by Fodhla to be 'written' and carefully preserved at Tara. They were added to after each meeting and in King Cormac's time they were named "The Psalter of Tara". Ed: It appears from the ancient chonicles that some form of writing was known in that time. Eithrial, the 11th Monarch, was also credited with writing in his own hand, the history of the Gaels (or Gadelians). 49. SIORNA; 34th Monarch Slain 1O3O B.C. ========== Jeremiah is known in Irish tradition as the Ollam Fodhla or Fola. Ollam denotes in Hebrew "the possession of hidden knowledge", and fola meand "wonderful", or in Celtic, "revealer". Together they describe a Hebrew prophet. One of the princesses he took with him on his journey out of Israel was Tamar Tephi, who is said to be buried in a mound called The Great M/ergesh, on the Hill of Tara. Tara comes from the Hebrew-Phoenician; Torah, meaning "the Law". Tara was previously called Cathair Crofin. Jeremiah established a college there called Mur-Ollamain or "school of wisdom" Jeremiah is said to be buried near the ruins of Devenish Abbey, on the Isle of Devenish in Lower Lough Erne, near Enniskillen, co. Fermanagh. Jeremiah demanded of King Heremon that he forsake the worship of Bel and serpents before he could mary Princess Tamar. The author claims this was where the legend of St. Patick driving out the snakes originated. From "Tracing our Ancestors", Haberman, British Israel Assoc. 1934; Vancouver, B.C. 3. Hi Art & Bernadette Went to Fermanagh a few years ago to research. We stayed at a little pub in Beleek called "Moohan's Fiddlestone" Traditional Irish Pub and Guesthouse. Reservations 036565-8008, Fax 010 35372-51516. The owners at that time were John & Anne McCann. Great music and Guiness. Beautiful lochs nearby and only a few miles from Ederney. I found the staff at the library in Enniskillen absolutely fabulous and got my best research done there for Fermanagh. Get a friendly girl on side, one to one, that seems the best way. Am not a big fan of the Heritage Centres per se but have not tried the Tyrone one, so can't comment. Others might. They just might be great! Have fun, and DON't talk about "the troubles" - the locals just don't want to know. 3. Hi, I have located a birth certificate of my grandmother's sister Catherine, born to Philip and Maryanne (Bogue) Maguire on 9 June 1884 in Broughderg. I can't find the town on the map. I believe it may be in the Maguiresbridge area. Can anyone enlighten me? Is anyone familiar with the Maguire family of Broughderg ? terrysmall@mindspring.com Thank you, Sandy Small Westwood, N.J.

Its a townland in Aghavea parish. Then you can go back to the county page (Fermanagh) and search by parish and get a map. Janet C-S
