    3. The records listed by me in yesterdays post are held by the PRONI in Belfast, Northern Ireland ad I think that the only way to access these would be to go there in person, or employ a profesional genealogist. The staff at PRONI will answer limited queries: but will not do research of a genealogical nature. The address is: The Public Record Office of northern Ireland, 66 Balmoral Avenue, Belfast, BT9 6NY Northern Ireland to make a quesry as to whether a record is available for consultation before going to the office e mail: PRONI@nics.gov.uk The search room is open to the public from 9.15am - 4.45pm Monday to friday and late opening on Thursdays, closed on public holidays and for approx 2 weeks sometime round november/Dcember, according to the information I have. I did not post any URl for any web site so you missed nothing. however, I did have this one reference in my files... LDS film # 0259187-90 Indoor Relief Register 1845-1918 and Record of Births 1846-1918 and Deaths 1899-1918 Lowtherstown Poor Law Union (Irvinestown) covering part of Co. Fermanagh and part Co. Tyrone Also, this reference passed on to me yesterday by our listowner :-) >LDS film # 0259148 Enniskillen, Poor Law union and work house register. I do not know of any other film reference numbers..but if anyone has any, I would appreciate it if they could pass them on to me (for any county) so that I can keep a list for the future....... I'm in Ireland, Dublin and have no experience of using any archives other than those here - the National Archives and Library etc....so references for other places which I have are those which I pick up elsewhere and pass on.... 1. Irish Work House Records
    2. Jane O'Brien
    3. There are Indoor and outdoor registers in existance for some places. Indoor registers in some instances give information on the following: Name & Surname; age; marital status if adult; status if child; religion; disability if there was one, spouses name and children, where they came from and date of admissin, leaving or death. Outdoor registers: Name, age, maritial status, spouse, children, where from As with parish records these are the categories which there is supposed to be information on , that is no guarantee that any union actually took all this information. Survival of records has been poor and more so in areas where famine hit worst unfortunately. All documents pertaining to workhouses have not been collected and stored in central archival unit yet. 33 Unions were created during the famine and some unions changed names or parts of them became part of other unions. some unions cross county boundaries. Other recrds survive besides the inmate listings, but these are the ones of most concern to those who earch for information from the time of the famine. Minute books generally give no mor than information on the running of the workhouse, same goes for rough minute books. General Ledgers give information on monetary transactions, personal ledgers give info on officers of teh union. Rate books list info on tenements, but also the occupier and immediate lessor in some instances. Some unions kept vaccination records, some death and birth records, electoral records. Those records still in existance do not necessarily cover the whole period of the famine. Some give information from c. 1840 and then others may just give information on one year. The following is alist of Poor Law Unions which have some information on work house registers The information is held in different parts of the country. SOme of it in the PRONI in Belfast, in those instances I simply list a P, others are held by the National Archives or National Library in Dublin, or in the county libraries. Some may have been filmed and held by LDS centres, however I have no knowledge of any of these. Jane Co. 3. I read with interest Philip White's inquirey.I wonder if there may be a connection between his Johnstons and mine. My G-G-grandfather,Patrick Johnston, married Sarah Slevin in County Fermanagh around 1842. They had 8 children that I'm aware of in Ireland before immigrating to the U.S. in 1861. Patrick was born to William and Kate Johnston around 1813. Sarah was born to Hugh and Ellen Slavin around 1821. Their childrens' names were: William,D.O.B.1844; Mary(McKay) Johnston,1847; Hugh,1847; Catherine,1852; Sarah(Murphy)Johnston,1854; James,1856; Patrick,1858; John,1860; and born in the U.S., Eliza Jane(Coffey)Johnston,1862. They settled in the town of Greece,N.Y., a suburb of Rochester. In 1868 when Patrick Sr. became a citizen a clerk made a mistake and spelled his name "Johnson". We've been Johnsons ever since. If anyone has any Knowledge of these Johnston-Johnsons,I would greatly appreciate the info. sincerely, Greg Johnson

My great grandfather Patrick Johnston was born in Fermanagh County on May 3, l831, and his wife, my great grandmother, Bridget McDonald was born on Nov 12, l831, I believe in the same county. I have no further information other than they were Roman Catholic and both immigrated to the US, I believe when they were children.
