A couple of years ago, a friend sent us a forty page (pp 41 - 86) extract from "Ordnance Survey Memoirs" - 'Parish of Enniskillen, County Fermanagh, Statistical Report by Lieutenant John Chaytor, 18 October 1834'. Lieut Chaytor's report on the Parish of Enniskillen is detailed, however, don't expect to find your ancestors referred to unless they were gentry, school-teachers, 'principal proprietors', or clergy. The extract covers similar topics to the other 'Memoirs' reviewed. It looks like a useful adjunct. Chaytor records from the 1831 Census of Enniskillen, there were 2,775 families, 1,357 in agriculture, 715 in trade, 703 other families; there were 13,777 inhabitants, 6,470 males, 7,307 females; 3,214 males above 20 years of age, 95 1st class agricultural males, 1,096 2nd class, 549 3rd class, 161 in manufacture, 767 in trades, 151 other capitalists, 193 non-agricultural labourers, 160 other male paupers; 42 male servants above 20, 15 under 20, 555 females. We regret we can't offer more information on this source. A reprint by the genealogical publisher in Baltimore? Peter
Hi all, I have a question. A family member gave me a document that had an official stamp on it. It read: Newtown Butler Apr 22 1872 I certify that it appears by an entry in the parish register of Galloon, that William Alex., son of James and Eliza CALDWELL (or Callwell, can't tell for sure) was baptized on 31 May 1857. ? (W or M??) Hudson, Rector of Galloon. First question - does anyone online have a clue as to what religion that might have been? I assumed Church of Ireland (Anglican), but I wrote to the parish several years ago (entry not found), and even had family over there once go through the register with the rector and nothing was found. Could it have been Presbyterian? I'd appreciate any suggestions or advice. --------------- My family in Fermanagh: I.James/Eliza CALDWELL born Scotland? A. William Alexander CALDWELL baptized May 1857 Galloon. B. Essie CALDWELL born approx 1864 By 1879, there is mention of the family in Antrim county (Belfast), where they were until at least 1892, when Wm. Alexander married and then emigrated. Essie died (I'm assuming single) in 1930 in Belfast, I have her death record. That's it. Not much! Bonnie (Bonz) blmalmat@bellsouth.net
Along with the OS Survey Memoirs, I also recommend "The Letters of John O'Donovan from Fermanagh (1834)." This book was published in 1993 by St. Davog's Press, Belleek, and is a reprint of the letters of O'Donovan at the time of the making of the first Ordnance Survey. They contain his comments on the life, antiquities, notable families, personalities, physical features and placenames of Fermanagh, as he walked the length and breadth of it in Fall and Winter of 1834. Unlike the OS Survey Memoirs, this book is a personal account of a man's impressions of the county. Also contains fascinating information on the tims, including comments on placenames. Sorry, I cannot do lookups in either book. If you are interested in the land of your ancestors, you should buy and read them whether you think you will find your ancestor mentioned or not! Again, I don't know specifically where you can get them, but they are around. Try Irish bookstores or geneaogical bookstores. Janet C-S
Since several have asked: The OS Survey Memoirs for Co Fermanagh are published by Queens University Press (Belfast). The one for Lower Lough Erne is Volume 14. I believe the rest of Fermanagh is covered in one other volume. They are actually the descriptions meant to accompany the OS maps. The term "memoir" is misleading. This is not someone's diary, but comes fom the term "Aide-Memoire". They were compiled from the field notes of the people working for the Ordnance Survey. What they contain has been already given by another lister. There are VERY few names given. Only an occasional mention along the lines of "The rector of the parish is Mr. Porteous..." They are available from several Irish bookstores and genealogy book sources, but I'm not sure exactly who has them in stock right now. Try Hanna's or other bookstores. Janet C-S
I have Vol 14 of the OS Memoirs, which covers Lower Lough Erne and includes Devenish parish. I found it quite fascinating, knowing that the author was traveling through the very area where my ancestor was living at the time. (1834-35). I would recommend reading the one that covers your area of interest. Odds are highly against it mentioning your ancestor, but just the contemporary description of things is fascinating. Janet C-S
I was thanked for the critique of the "Ordinance Memoirs" but really didn't give much, so here is more. There are certain "topics" that are more or less included in each townland discussed. These are: Name and derivation, locality, natural features (hills, lakes, rivers, bogs, woods), climate, botany, wildlife, geology, modern topography (meeting houses, churches), social economy, local government, dispensary (any medical care available), assist. for poor, religions, habits of the people (not esp. complimentary), emigration (usually 1 paragraph about where most went), manufacture, agriculture, rural proprietors (large landowners), crops and implements (interesting), sometimes cattle and school. Most topics are covered in 1-6 paragraphs. Maggie
Purchased the "Ordinance Memoirs" vol 40 that goes with Griffiths Valuation. Nothing for Fermanagh, very little for Leitrim (6 pages), 20 pages for Sligo. If you are really working on a line from Cavan or Monaghan or Louth this volume would be quite helpful. There is a bit of attitude - comments about the "bad" ways of the Irish farmers but you just have to take it as it is, a product of its time. Now that I have said that, anybody care to trade a copy of "Ballingalera - Its time and people" (something like that) by Forde and Clancy? I am in western US working on McGourtys of Co. Leitrim (Kiltyclogher) with a few in Cavan and Fermanagh. Maggie
Can someone please look up Henry Nathaniel Lowe (the newspaper editor) for me in Dundas' Enniskillen Parish and Town. Thanks much. Yours, Dora Smith

Hi all! A note of thanks to all who sent me suggestions for places to visit on my trip to Ireland! The country was beautiful! I was able to visit Enniskillen Castle, where I was given MUCH information, and several cemeteries. I also was lucky enough to find a copy of "The Fermanagh Story" at LWN Hall Booksellers in Enniskillen (it was the last copy on the shelves). Thanks again! Misi
I am researching Irwine/Irwin from Lisnaskea or McGuires Bridge in Fermanagh County. My g grandfather William Irwine was married to Ellen Bowes. They had children named William Irwin who settled in the Toronto area and some of his children lived in Hamilton. My Grandfather, Thomas, married Henrietta Flora and had children in Brockville, and in New York State. They eventually lived in Windsor, Ontario. What I am looking for is how to obtain information on William Irwin and Ellen Bowes, i.e. marriage certificate, death certificate etc. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
For those of you with ancestors who came to Sydney, NSW, Australia and settled throughout the Hunter Valley area of NSW, this website : http://www.iniaccess.net.au/~patmay/ has a lot of interesting information including, Cemeteries, Headstone Transcriptions, Court Records, Publications, Newspapers, Churches, Family History Societies, etc. Perhaps you may just find an elusive ancestor ! Fellow Fermanagh Listers Searching for data and contacts on the following: My Warnocks come from near the border of County Tyrone and CoFermanagh in Ireland. The following summary bridges the time when they moved to Australia: HUGH WARNOCK (1835-1901) Born 10 June 1835 At Sloughan Co Fermanagh Ireland. One brother John Warnock remained in Ireland .From M K Warnocks diary Staughan Co Fermanagh Ireland however Linda Meehan feels this should read Sloughan. More recent information suggests that indeed this Townland could have been Henrystughan Co Fermanagh Ireland which is shortened locally to Stughan (pers.com. Mike MARTIN) Death Certificate states born Knockmore Co Fermanagh. Possibly Knockmore may have been the name of the Warnock farm? A baker by trade left London England on the ship "Dover Castle" 1002 tons Master John M Ayles for Melbourne Australia 5 November 1861 arriving Melbourne early 1862. Hugh's age stated as 26 years on departure documents. His wife Anne (see more data on Anne below)and only surviving son Hugh Alexander (another son Thomas Francis 1862-1863 died in Co Tyrone) who arrived in Sydney 27 September 1865. They spent the remainder of their lives in the Coonabarabran district, NSW Australia. Hugh had one brother John Warnock who lived in Ireland and married a Maguire see later in this note. ANNE WARNOCK NEE KEENAN (1830?-1905) Born in Fivemiletown County Tyrone Ireland about 1830. Anne arrived in Australia at Sydney on the ship "Wallasea" September 27 1865 having left Plymouth England on May 30 1865. Anne lived with Hugh until his death in 1901 and then at Trillick, Bugaldi NSW Australia with her son Hugh Alexander Warnock and his family until her death on February 3 1905 at Bugaldi and was buried February 4 1905. Anne's death Certificate states her parents as Hugh Thomas KEENAN and Mary MAGUIRE. On the "Wallasea" shipping lists her parents are Thos. & Margaret KEENAN of Five Mile Town, Co.Tyrone, Ireland. MKW Diary shows her parents as Thomas KEENAN and Mollie MAGUIRE. The year of birth poses a problem also 75 years at death places a birth at 1830? Yet her age in the had two brothers , Patrick KEENAN, a storekeeper in Five Mile Town, and Thomas KEENAN, a hotel keeper also in Five Mile Town. She had four sisters - Mary, Jane, Margaret and Ellen KEENAN. She had cousins named McKENNA, McALEER, MAGUIRE, NANN (could be NAWN), McCAFFREY and KEENAN. HUGH ALEXANDER WARNOCK (1860-1921) Born July 14 1860 Trillick, County Tyrone Ireland and arrived in Australia aged 5 years with his mother Anne Warnock on the "Wallasea". He was my grandfather. John WARNOCK brother of Hugh WARNOCK (1835-1901) son Alexander WARNOCK and Mary MURPHY married Anne Maguire . John was a brother of Hugh Warnock (1835-1901)see above and at this stage is presumed to have been born at same place as his brother Hugh in Fermanagh and remained in Ireland and had five sons and one daughter that I have found todate as follows: Phillip WARNOCK born Brookeborough Femanagh 10 Aug 1864 Mary Anne WARNOCK born Brooke borough Fermanagh 15 Jan 1868 James WARNOCK born Brooke borough Fermanagh 3 Oct 1869 Patrick WARNOCK Hugh WARNOCK William WARNOCK born Bohatton Fermanagh 4 JUl 1874 Any connections with any of the above? Please E-mail me Slainte Rod Warnock Kilaben Bay NSW Australia rwarnock@ozemail.com.au

Looking for info on John Orr and Margaret Burnside Orr . Have a picture of the old home place in Ireland . John was born 1809 in Ireland and died Feb 6, 1900 . Margaret Burnside his wife was born 1820 in Ireland . Though we have a picture of their headstones it is rather hard to make out the dates. They were buried at Colebrooke along with Thomas and Lilly Burnside her parents. Dates are even harder to read on the headstone. All of John and Margaret Children came to the US except for Fleming Orr who was a Methodist minister in Ireland. Cousin is also looking for his Father's sister and brother's who may have stayed in Ireland. There parents being Joshua Burnside Orr born 1862 being one of the youngest of John and Margaret. He had a twin sister. already here. Joshua brought one his twins sons to the U. S. but died shortly after arriving he died in 1915 and his twin sister Essy Burnside Orr then raised Joshua Burnside Orr Jr. Thomas Fleming Orr the other twin came over later. We suppose Joshua Burnside Sr. intended to send for the family as soon as he could but as fate would have it wasn't able to do this. He was married to Margaret Elkin Feb 26, 1903 at Tyrone, Omagh, Ireland. Children who may have stayed in Ireland 1. John Robert Orr born Feb 17, 1904 2.
