The Cassidy Clan will soon be having its annual rally in Enniskillen, County Fermanagh on the weekend of August 20-21. If anyone will be traveling to Ireland then (or for the Irish on this list), you are all welcome. Our program is not specific to Cassidys. We will be having lectures, great entertainment (a full banquet on Saturday and a celi dance on Sunday) and day trips for everyone with an interest in Irish culture, history and genealogy. Also, the Fermanagh Crystal Company, located in Belleek, Co. Fermanagh, will be selling items on the Saturday of the rally. The company makes wonderful lead cystal items by hand, including several items with engraved family coats of arms, for reasonable prices. If you're interested in their cystal, check out the ones photographed on the Cassidy Clan web site: www.cassidyclan.org From this web site you can purchase both Fermanagh crystal engraved with the Cassidy coat of arms and almost any other family coats of arms. Finally, can anyone recommend for my a book or research paper on the migration of Catholics from Fermanagh to other parts of Ireland after the plantation? I want to know how my family ended up in County Galway by the 1850's. Does anyone have JONES ancestors who moved to Fermanagh before 1840? Carole
If anyone on any of these lists is going to be around Dublin next Saturday this is a meeting which you would do well to attend. Maybe not to say anything - or get any answers....but the more people who are at it the better..the more questions asked the better and there really is a need for visitors to show an interest in hoe the General Registrar's Office works. It is understaffed and very small for those of you who have never been here. People who use it are limited to getting only 8 photocopies per day. This puts a limit on searchers and professionals alike Professionals need those copies in order to show themselves as efficient genealogists. Searchers are only here for a limited time and if they get copies which are not those of the person they are looking for then they have to go back to the drawing board....and that's very hard to do if the results are going to be posted out to you in a few weeks time and you're back in whatever part of teh world it is you live in. Jane Pertinent to the NI lists as well because all NI records can be had from Dublin up to 1922 and at a cheaper rate <g> -----Original Message----- From: Eileen M. Hello All, I am hoping that some listers can provide answers or point me in a direction to learn more. I have a gg grandfather who came to Australia in 1863 and I am presently trying to trace him around Fermanagh. What I would like to learn is more of the movement of Kerrs (which I take is Scottish in origin) into Ireland and Fermanagh. Can some of the listers please advise on where I can learn more and in particular if any have knowledge of the arrival of the KERR name into Fermanagh. All information is gratefully accepted. Regards Danny Kerr in Australia

I'm trying to find information regarding the Ui Bloid clan, from which the Gunning/Gonnynge/etc. family of Somerset, England descended. Some souces say the Ui Bloid were ancesters of the O'Conning Clan, which descended into the Gunning family. Thanks for any pointers which anyone provides. Kay Hain

The Ordnance Survey Memoirs are also available from the LDS Library in Salt Lake City. My ancestor left Fermanagh in 1835 which was the very year that the OS Memoir was written for the parish he emigrated from. This one even described the druid ruins on his townland (Bracky). I Xeroxed a copy of the memoir while I was in Salt Lake City and it is going to be incorporated in the my family history when I am ready to publish. It describes in great detail what life was like at that time. (Much unemployment. Much begging door to door. etc.) I read somewhere that the Memoirs were written by Junior Army Officers by direct order from the General in Charge of the Ordnance Corps of the British Army. This was meant to keep these young officers busy while the enlisted men did the actual survey and produced the maps. It was also to sharpen their observation skills and their writing skills. The Navy did much the same in Nelson's time and in my time as well. As a Junior Officer in the Royal Canadian Navy I had to keep a daily "Midshipman's Journal" and God help me if it wasn't done properly. Many people will be disappointed that there is no Memoir for their parish. The Opposition Party in the British Government claimed that the preparation and publishing of these Memoirs was a waste of taxpayers' money and the practise was stopped. I am not sure what year this was but it was around 1835 or 1836 I think. Yours aye, John Carruthers Victoria BC Canada
