I found Jane O'Brien's notes to the Fermanagh List some time ago about the use of first names in Ireland interesting and informative. It brought to mind a little problem I have. My father used to maintain that Sylvester Cassidy was the greatest of the Cassidys, but I have no idea who Sylvester Cassidy was. If he lived within the last two centuries, he was probably American Irish. Anybody out there know of a famous Irish American out there of that name? If he is an ancestor he propably lived at least 200 years ago. I think I know most of the names since. My problem is that at that time he would probably have spoken Gaelic and almost certainly had a Gaelic name. Does anybody know of a Gaelic equivelant of Sylvester? Sorry if I am repeating myself. I know I sent this before but to the subscribe address, not the list address
Hi Joan I have located Cleenish on an 1837 map of Fermanagh, that I bought recently. Cleenish is/was located between Lough Mac?ean and Lough Nilly, near the border where Leitrim and Cavan join. I'm afraid that I have lent a lot of local material to a friend, so someone else may have access to info on the area. However, from my map, Cleenish looks like a parish, as the village below it was listed as Holywell. Hope it helps. I, too, am very interested in locating the ship (unknown name) that sailed on May 5, 1821 from Londonderry Ireland with my ggg grandfather, George DICKSON and family, and Walter MITCHELL, and William STERRIT/STERRET to either the US or to Canada. I've searched the net and been through everything in my local genealogy library and there's very little info available for that year. Any suggestions/help would be greatly appreciated. I've been trying to find the sailing ship in which my ancestors left Ireland to come to America, in 1817. I've had no luck either. If you find anything like that, I'd be interested. Hello, I've just joined your list because I recently learned that my great, great grandparents were James WELSH and Mary BURGESS. Mary was born about 1811 to John BURGESS and Margaret. I believe Mary had, at least, a brother Arthur who was married at Cleenish. I've tried to find this on my maps, the atlas, guide books of NI, expedia maps, etc. without success My questions: 1. Would this be a name of a parish or was there a place, at one time called this? 2. Might this be a clue as to were in Fermanagh the family resided prior to their emigration to Canada? 3. Is there anyone else researching these names? .Any help will be appreciated. Thanks, Joan, On. Canada
Hi John, Noticed your surname of STINSON. Whereabouts are your STINSON ancestors from? My 2g grandmother was Jane STINSON who was living in Derryvullan parish in Fermanagh. I've been trying to find the sailing ship in which my ancestors left Ireland to come to America, between 1830-1843. Have found a few, but only a few most are later than that If you find anything like that, I'd be interested also. Thanks, Brandi CASSIDY/BASHAW/GRADY/VANCE/SHUTTERS/KNIGHT/LEMMONS/MAHAR/HOLBERT/SMITH
Trying to find information about George Portteus b. 1754 in Ireland. He had a son, Thomas, born in Enniskillen May 20, 1799 and a son David, born in Enniskillen April 17, 1797. They left Ireland for America in 1817 along with a Mitchell family (one of whom later married Thomas Portteus), also said to be from Enniskillen. I am trying to find any information about any Portteus or Mitchell families living in Enniskillen during that time period. Thank you, Lois Terrell

Hi Doreen and all, Have you tried using the Rootsweb Archives? http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl It is a great way to track down postings that you have "lost" as well as checking to see if there has been mentions of names of people / locations of interest. Think it is St. Rowan's have a picture of the Church with cemetery. Though Fleming Orr was a Methodist minister he is buried there with a daughter Edith Francis Orr and his wife Myra Constance Plewman Orr. It is a double stone. With Lilly Burnside and Thomas Burnside , Margaret Burnside Orr and John Orr on other side. Would someone know how the address to this church or how to get the address.

I'm unsubbing for 2 weeks while I visit Fermanagh in person. Bye all, Janet C-S
: Does anybody have a reference to Michael Cassidy, who may have lived somewhere in Fermanagh and later moved to Longwood, Hill-of-downs area, Co. Meath? His date of birth would be c.1841. Family lore has it that he had several brothers. It is known that he married Margaret Hinds in Longwood, Co. Meath, on April 8, 1861, and that they had an only son, Christopher, born there on November 12, 1861. Nothing further is known of Margaret Hinds. Either they parted or she died, since only Michael and his son, Christopher, emigrated to the U.S. in 1872, the record showing that they entered through Philadelphia, PA. I know most of the record from that point on, but I can't find references to Michael prior to his marriage date. I know that Michael Cassidy is a fairly common name, particularly in Fermanagh; but at this point I'll grasp at any straw so that I can continue. Any information will be very grateful received.
