    1. Hastings in Fermanagh
    2. Hello again everyone: As there are always new people joining, I thought I would post my query a second time hoping someone recognizes the information. I am searching for information on my ggggrandfather, John S. HASTINGS, 24 Jun 1824 - 1887, and his mother, father and seven brothers and sisters who came to New York in the US from County Fermanagh in the late 1820s, early 1830s. Three brothers were Hugh John Hastings, 20 Aug 1820 - 12 Sep 1883, Thomas and Richard Hastings. Most of the family worked in the newspaper industry in the US. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Best wishes, Matt Hartigan Safety Harbor, Florida, USA

    2. janhart
    3. Hi list I came across this small book today in my local library - haven't scanned through it all but I came across these Fermanagh names. Some of the names seem unusual so I thought I'd send the information to the list. TITLE: "Passengers from Ireland" Transcribed from The Shamrock or Hiberian Chronicle by Donald M. Schlegel Produced Baltimore 1980. Ship Alexander, Captain Burns from Londonderry arriving at New York before 20 June 1812. Owen Durish Catherine Durish Arthur Graham Bridget Graham Peter Breen Owen Murray William Kerr Jane M'Gir John Graham Eliza Graham The book includes an alphabetical index of names, so if anyone wants me to look up a particular name, I'd be happy to return to the library to do so. 1. Hamiltons
    2. Rich Barlow
    3. Hi, I'm new to the list and am wondering if anyone on the list could help me out with my search? What I have on the Hamiltons comes from a book "Kent Genealogy" by Authur Scott Kent. Privately printed for members of the Kent family in 1933. I an a decendant of the Kent family and in the possession of a photocopy of that book. The following is taken from that book . " Thomas Dill, son of James was born in York County, Penna., in 1751. When a Young man He made a trip to Ireland, whether on bussness or pleasure is not known. While there he met and married Rebecca Hamilton, said to have been the only girl in a family of nineteen children. It is believed that she was liveing on a small farm known as "Drumsamis" in County Tyrone. After their marriage they lived for a time in Ireland and their oldest son, James and daughter Mary, are believed to have been born in or near Belfast. There is a story in our family to the effect that one child was born on board ship on the return trip to America, died and was buried at sea. This story, however cannot be verified. After their return they lived in Pennsylvania for several years then about the beginning of the new century, moved to Kentucky, and three or four years later to Ross County, Ohio. Rebecca Died in 1816 or 17 and Thomas in 1834." With this as a starting point I searched the Internet for Hamiltons and Co Tyrone Ireland. I have found a lot of references to the Hamilton family in Co. Tyrone. I have found a record of Rebecca's birth "abt. 1762, Enniskillen, Fermanagh, Ireland" and marriage " 1774 or 76 Faniskillin, Fermanagh, Ireland" Most of the records seem to date to the mid 1800's and I'm looking for the mid to late 1700's. I am trying to find her parents and or brothers. Rebecca was my 6xggrandmother. I'm still looking and would welcome any help. Thank You. 2. Hi Janet, Old Finner is in the middle of a field right outside of Ballyshannon on the way to Bundoran. My husband and I were there this past March. It is really run down and the church is just a shell. They seem to have all religions buried there. Hope this helps. Barbara

    1. Fermanagh Clans Rally
    2. Hello all: The Cassidy Clan just had their Rally in August, in lovely Enniskillen, Co. Fermanagh. It was decided at this year's rally that in honor of the millenium, next year's rally will for all Fermanagh Clans! So if you descend from any of Fermanagh's families, won't you consider attending? It will be held early September (exact dates TBA) at the Drumshane Hotel in Lisnarrick (Near Irvinestown). You can get details as we post them, at the Cassidy Clan website: http://www.CassidyClan.org Janet C-S

    2. This is probably the graveyard near Bundoran beside the Ballyshannon/Bundoran road. Its inscriptions are recorded in "Where Erne and Drowes meet the sea - Fragments from a Patrician Parish." By Fr Paddy Gallagher in 1961. John B. Cunningham.

    1. Re: re: John O'Donovan's Letters
    2. Someone asked for an explanation of this book, so here goes: The book, The Letters of John O'Donovan from County Fermanagh (edited by John B Cunningham) contains the letters that John O'Donovan wrote while making the first Ordnance Survey of Ireland (in 1834). To quote from the introduction: "These contain his comments on the life, anitiquities, notable families, personalities, physical features and placenames of the county as he walked the length and breadth of it in a few months in the late Autumn and Winter of 1834. His letters give a picture of the County of Fermanagh like no other writer has ever given at this time." There are also notes on each letter by the editor. Unfortunately, as John Cunningham explained recently on the list, the book is out of print and there are no plans at present to reprint it. (Unless there is such rich, history-minded person on the list who would like to sponsor it?!!) Janet C-S

    2. In a message dated 9/10/99 8:16:15 PM, Zackbenet@aol.com wrote: <<Catherine McDonnell/ McDonald was born on February 1st, 1784 in Enniskillen. She had siblings named William, Joseph, Sarah, Mary Jane and more unnamed and Archibald. Their parents' name are unknown. I believe all of them were born in Northern Ireland (maybe all in Enniskillen) except Archibald was born in North Carolina. They left Ireland for America between 1790 and 1794. Is there any baptism record for Catherine? to reveal her parents' names. Is there any baptism record index? If not, is there any local researcher whom I can hire to search for the baptism record? >> Zack, You don't mention religion, but if they were Protestant (Church of Ireland), then the C of I church in Enniskillen has records from 1667. You can rent a film (extracts 1666-1826) from the LDS FHCs. It is film number 992663. If you don't want to look yourself, you can inquire from Heritage World in Dungannon, Tyrone. <http://www.iol.ie/irishworld/> which will search their computerised records for a fee. (Be sure they have what you want first.) Good luck! Janet C-S
