    1. Why My Ancestors Emigrated to the New World
    2. I guess I can't answer that question for you but one of the reasons was probably "Marketing". The following is a Canadian site that has several booklets transcribed that were published in Ireland to promote the cheap land of milk and honey available in Canada in the early 1800's (cheap land - yes, milk and honey - not!). This Is Bill Martin's site - there may be other items of interest - fill your boots: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~wjmartin/supplndx.htm When visiting my grandmother in 1958, I was tickled that my Uncle still thought Canadians lived on the ranges with Indian savages, bears and all. The culprit - old pulp books written by people who hadn't been there probably. The power and lure of the written word! rgds Jim Dawe

    2. Margaret- Thanks for this information--I'll check it out. Sally Mosgrove Seattle www.seanruad.com shows: 1) there is a townland of "Enniskillen" in the civil parish of Artrea, Co. Tyrone. 2) the Poor Law Union of Enniskillen, which covers a large part of Co. Fermanagh, extends into Co. Tyrone. The Tyrone civil parish of Kilskeery, at least in part, falls within the Enniskillen PLU. Perhaps these are some possibilities. 1. Enniskillen/Tyrone Co
    2. Just thought I'd check in on this subject, as it has been puzzling me for some time, too. My ggggrandfather Adam MOSGROVE came in 1817 to Ohio (via PA) from "Enniskillen", but also sometimes listed "Tyrone County" as his origin, and sometimes put them together as, "near Enniskillen, Tyrone County". I would love to hear from anyone with similar history if you ever figure out this puzzle. I'm wondering how far out from Enniskillen in Tyrone County a town could be (and how many there are in that area), to still reference Enniskillen as the nearest "big" town! Sally in Seattle Researching MOSGROVE, FOSTER, MOORE 11/18/01 From: "Jim Ward" <[email protected]> To: [email protected]: << As long as we are on the subject of distances from Enskillen being in Fermanaugh Parrish I would like to see if anyone can satisfy my curiousity on this point. My Armstrongs are said to have come from Fermanaugh to VA in 1734 though more likely they stopped in PA a while first. My Rutledges are said to have come from Tyrone Co. maybe somewhat later. Now there were at least five Rutledge families and that many Armstrongs in Augusta Co., VA circa 1750. In many cases these families intermarried. Back in Fermanaugh marriages between Armstrongs and Rutledges can be found in church records around 1700. Now since Tyrone Co. seems to be as little as ten miles from Enskillen could the Rutledges who show up in Enskillen records have actually lived in Tyrone Co.? >> <<This thread is interesting several ways; We know our Rutledge ancestors lived next door, indeed between two families of Armstrong just south of 1600s Anglo-Scot border; We know our American line came from Virginia or Pennsylvania through Tennessee to Missouri, and on the narrowest of evidence ( never confirmed in any detail ), we think that because our Rutledge line founded and named the town of Tyrone, Missouri, it is about even money that they came to America from the County of Tyrone, Ireland.Of course we cannot write that in stone, but it remains open as a distinct possibility. 2. Bill Barber
    3. Bill, I also have DIXON and OVENS ancestors from the Parish of Inishmacsaint, specifically from Bolusty and Drumcrow West townlands. William Dundas (b. July 11, 1813) of Bolusty, married Mary Jane Dixon (b. abt 1822) abt 1844. They went to Coboconk, Victoria Co., Ontario in 1861. Also in my files I have the following OVENS: Arthur, Dorothy Mary, Dundas, Evelyn, Florence, Harry, Jane, John, John William, Lily, Rebecca, Robert Arthur, Thomas John, William and William John. Robert Arthur(b. abt 1905) was the son of Dundas OVENS (b. 1880) and Ivy ?. Jane OVENS was born about 1784. There are OVENS families living at Drumcrow West today. Have you checked the Fermanagh Gold and Fermanagh Friends websites for any records? 1. ARMSTRONG in Co Tyrone
    2. Not sure if the earlier message went through. I found notable ARMSTRONG tombstone(s) in the small churchyard at Ballinamallard Co Tyrone which is near the Co Fermanagh border. The map shows a sinuous outline for county boundaries in this area and areas of Co Fermanagh seem to be closer to Ballinamallard than to any Fermanagh town. Eleanor

    2. I have been trying to send this dam...thing all afternoon. If I didn't think it would be very useful I would have given up hours ago. I have decided I am Computer illiterate. Anyhow, I have found the 1901 census extremely useful but it is a bit confusing if you do not know where the townlands are, it still may be a bit confusing as there a lot of little known townlands on there but if anyone has trouble getting their bearings I will be glad to help. 3. I also note on web pages like Ancestry and Family search that > Enniskillen is mentioned a great deal as place of birth, but Enniskillen as a > residential town is in the scheme of things very small so do not take that as > gospel. On the other hand the Town Hall has records of every marriage taken > place in Fermanagh from 1862. Maureen, Another thing to bear in mind when one sees Enniskillen it may well not refer to the Town but the Enniskillen Parish and hence includes the area to the north of both Aghalurcher and Aghavea Parishes and east of the Town. 1. Re: Newtownbutler,ClonesParish
    2. Janet, All records for Newtownbutler marriages after 1862 are held at Enniskillen Town Hall as well as PRONI of course. Newtownbutler is immediately on the border with Clones so the records will be held in Clones. or of course DUBLIN. On the other hand it is possible that the church in Newtownbutler will have their own records on computer which may be available from the FHC. Just a little thought...some children were never registered...more so in Catholic families as it was the Baptism that mattered, getting rid of Original Sin, and officialdom was not of prime importance and if the baby was sickly at birth, he or she was baptised on the spot by whovever was available at the birth. The Baptism words were certainly taught in Catholic Schools for this reason. and then again many stories abound of the child being taken to be baptised, but when the vicar or priest turned around to claim his fee the parents and child had disappeared. This is a general observation on my part and may not be so in your case but it didf happen. Maureen

    1. Newtownbutler,ClonesParish
    2. Hi everyone: >From what I am reading recently it appears that if I am looking for marriages and births in the Newtownbutler area around 1862, I need to look in Enniskillen records. Death records and deeds are then recorded in the Clones parish records which are kept where? Do I have this right? I just cannot seem to get anywhere with this. I have the birth of the first son in Newtownbutler in 1864 and the third in 1867. The in-between son's record is not listed for some strange reason although I have reasonabe documentation. The father and the fourth son show up in the 1901census still in Newtownbutler. any ideas? My cousin is going to Ireland in 2 years and I want to pin this down for her before she leaves. Janet
