    1. who has the virus?
    2. The new virus does not necessarily come with an attachment. However, the virus sends out a message that seems to come from a sneder, only it puts the _ (underscore) mark in front of the address. So, if you see an address that starts with _, do not open it. If you have Outlook, do not even preview it. The addresses that I know so far are infected begin with: [email protected] [email protected] [email protected] These are not the complete address, but are as much as I can see of the address on my computer without opening the mail--which I'm not going to do! 3. I have McAfee Activeshield & I have received many infected e-mails in the last 2 days. The minute the infected e-mail (NOT attachment) is opened, a window pops up warning me that there is an attachment & it might be dangerous--but the window is NOT a McAfee window, so you may be right......I have always deleted immediately because normally attachments don't throw this window up until you try to open them--but I have scanned my entire system 2 days in a row & I seem to be clean...... Can anyone else you uses McAfee comment on this??? McAfee sent me a newsletter about this virus, but it's true I have yet to see it warn me when the e-mails arrive. 2. We have Norton Anti-Virus with very recent signatures in front of our mail system. This morning it had detected and deleted occurrences of [email protected] in two email messages - one from "Dru Lewis" to the Monaghan list (per message title) and one from "Jan Highman" on - I can't tell because the title is blank. The incriminated files were respectively "HAMSTER.DOC.pif" and "me_nude.mp3.scr". Some messages have said the McAFEE does not see it, but I cannot confirm.

    1. HICKS surname in County Fermanagh
    2. Dear Friends, I am trying to locate the birthplace of my ggrandfather, Michael HICKS, who was born about 1830 somewhere in Ireland. There are eight HICKS families listed in the Griffiths Valuation for County Fermanagh in Parishes: Galloon, Kinawley, Devenish, Currin, and Drumkeeran. I would greatly appreciate hearing from anyone who has HICKS ancestors and who would be willing to share information with me if it is relevant. My ggrandfather, Michael HICKS, immigrated to Scranton, PA, USA, around 1850. He was Roman Catholic and worked as a Blacksmith. Thank you. Mary L. Casey in Michigan, USA.

    3. Somewhere around the year 1840, Edmund Magurn and wife Annie (Rielly) left Ireland to go to America. By the 1860's their children were living in the Boston area. I have been unable to find out through US records, where in Ireland the family originated. The name Magurn is quite rare. A review of the "householders index" shows that Fermanagh was the home of most families of that name at the time of the Griffiths Valuation. In the hopes that Edmund and Annie (Roman Catholics) came from the same area, I'm looking for advice on how to proceed. The Townlands where the surname occurs are: Parish of Cleenish: Cleenish, Gorteen, Crockareddy, Cloon, Lisbellaw T. Paris of Aghalurcher: Aghalurcher Glebe, Corraclare, Lisnaskea T., Pari of Enniskillen: Enniskillen T., Parish of Derryvullan: Derryvullan, Parish of Kinawley: Kinawley, Parish of Killesher: Tromogagh, Parish of Devenish: Carr, Devenish, Parish of Rossory: Enniskillen T., Rossorry Is there a library, church, GRO, etc. in Fermanagh where I could look for birth or marriage records that could help me determine if Edmund or his children came from the area described above? Regards Tom Dunn

    3. I gather Jan has directed you to the Irvine family page in Fermanagh Gold. I wrote the material in June 2000 and he put it in the web. It represents a pretty comprehensive picture of available published material and some private enquiries. The trees are also a pretty comprehensive picture of this family. But there were many other Irvine families in Co.Fermanagh who probably came from SW Scotland, many of whose descendants migrated to USA. As many of these were poor and/or tenants it is very difficult to trace their pedigrees from USA back to Ireland and from Ireland back to Scotland. Also I am not related to these lines so cannot help with "inside" knowledge, but am always glad to learn more about Dr.Christopher Irvine 1618-1693. But I wish you luck. ----- Original Message ----- From: John L Irvine <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, November 21, 2001 5:42 PM Subject: Irvine castle > does anybody know the history/can point to a source for the history of > Irvine castle - particularly its demise? > > John Irvine > Nepean Ont. > > ______________________________

    1. Réf. : Why My Ancestors Emigrated to the New World
    2. Yes. On this site there are TWO Guides to Emigrants, one published in 1822 in Dublin only, another in 1833 published in Dublin, London and Edinburgh (enlarging awareness to a larger geographical market ). They describe Upper and Lower Canada - now ,Ontario and Quebec. The comparaison of the two guides is fascinating and gives incite into the evolving environment the early settlers lived in. One thing I noticed being originally from Ottawa, is that in the 1833 guide, Bytown is mentionned as a thriving town, while in 1822 there is no mention at all. There is a very good reason. Bytown, now Ottawa, began in 1828 as a workers'camp and military barracks on what is today Parliament Hill, for those building the Rideau Canal when the construction started. In 1822, the site where the canal would bypass the Rideau Falls to enter the Ottawa (or Grand) River was not yet chosen. Although after the War of 1812, the necessity to construct a canal to join the Ottawa River, following the Rideau to the St Lawrence at Kingston was considered desirable for military and settlement reasons, no decision had been taken. The following is a Canadian site that has several booklets transcribed that were published in Ireland to promote the cheap land of milk and honey available in Canada in the early 1800's (cheap land - yes, milk and honey - not!). This Is Bill Martin's site - there may be other items of interest - fill your boots: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~wjmartin/supplndx.htm When visiting my grandmother in 1958, I was tickled that my Uncle still thought Canadians lived on the ranges with Indian savages, bears and all. 3. A new lister but another Irvine family researcher. I was told my family originaeted in Scotland but were forced to make a rapid unscheduled departure after the Jacobite rebellion. They were to Ireland (but I was never told where in Irealnd) Religious differences in the form of barn burning and they were off to N America. Fermanagh seems a likely place for their 2-3 generation stay in Ireland. William (b abt 1791 Ire) and his wife Elizabeth (b Ire abt 1797) plus son John (b Ire 1821) and maybe more, left Ireland after 1821 but before 1832. I also know that they first lived in Canada at Coteau du Lac, PQ and they also spent at least 4 years at Millen Bay, NY before settling in Kingston Twp., Ont by 1840. I have no record of any more in the family but I suspect there is more. I am interested in pursuing this with other Irvine researchers, so if any of the above looks or sounds familiar, lets talk.
