Hello to all, I am researching primarily my Cassidy lines from where I strongly believe come from Roslea, Co.Fermanagh. This is what I know. I am a 7th descendant of Benjamin Cassidy, born 1784 of Chesterfield, South Carolina, married to Barbara Bryant, brother to Levi Cassidy, b.1790 also of Chesterfield, SC. It is speculation, but I believe Zachariah Cassidy, b.1755 in Ireland and married to Mary Idly of Ireland to be Benjamin's father. Some believe William Cassidy, b. 175? (Zach's older brother to be the father, BUT either or) I have information that Zachariah's and William's father is a Lucas Cassidy, believed to be from Roslea or anyway, somewhere in Co.Fermanagh. Lucas left 1750 for Cheraw South Carolina to a bishop lynch. I have some information on the Lynch family in that area. I am interested in finding out about Lucas Cassidy to see if anyone knows his children, as well as the father to Benjamin. Hopefully, if there is some information in Co.Fermanagh or thereabouts to fill in missing links. Also, to know the story of Lucas, why he left, why Cheraw S.C., etc. Any information would be appreciated and I will be attending the Cassidy Clan rally in Fermanagh this summer. Regards, Brent Cassidy
Some years ago, travelling near Ballinamallard I sought directions to the townland of Relagh Guinness and was told to enquire at a certain farmhouse along the way. It turned out that the farmer and his wife were most helpful about the townland after inviting me in to the kitchen to hear more of my search. Their name was CRAWFORD and I think they are still there in the phone book. (I'm afraid I did not learn if they had an interest in their own genealogy or how long their association was with their farm). Cheers, Eleanor

Hi Maureen, Here's a question or questions for the list that hopefully runs closer to the "protocol". Enthusiasm does have a way of running off with things though! I have Henry Crawford who probably married Rose Ann Tubman somewhere in the Enniskillen area about 1825. At any rate, they had a child (my gg mother Helen) in Rossorry 23 Mar 1826, according to a family record. I have guessed that Rose Ann may have come from Kinawley, as that seems to be where almost all the Tubmans hailed from, but have found no real data beyond what I've given on this pair, and would welcome any leads. Helen's husband Thomas Gault was also from Fermanagh. His parents William Gault and Margaret Wallace probably married about 1825 also, but I have even less on them. They seem to have had children John, Thomas born in Fermanagh 2 May 1829, again from a family record), Agnes, Sarah, Robert and Rachel. Helen and all the Gaults appear to have moved to Scotland in the mid 1840s and on not too much more than a hunch, I'd think they were C of I people. So again, if you have, or of course if anyone has any thoughts on these names, I'd be delighted to hear. Facts and theories both welcome! Regards, Crawford.
I have a letter written in 1869 by Patrick Clark who came to New York from Fermanagh. In the letter he tells his uncle that "Patrick Clifford and family is well and James McGuire and family and his son John keeps a large liquor store in the corner of 43rd and 2nd Avenue". I know that there must be loads of James and John McGuires who came to NYC from Fermanagh, but does anyone think that these particular ones might be from their family? Is the liquor store a clue? I am guessing that the families were neighbors back home -- that would have been near Camletter and Greighmore townlands. Thanks for your comments and thoughts. Linda Cole

I am an avid reader of the list but have to say that recently it has become boring. I and am sure many others have a an interest in a particular name and have found a kindred spirit on this list but... and a big but we conduct our correspondence privately to avoid jamming up the list with correspondence which is of no interest to anyone else nor ever can be....ie. no dates. names or places. I have literally got to the point of deleting some postings without even reading them. This is very sad as I, like probably many others have a personal knowledge of Fermanagh and hold many records which I would be only too happy to share but it is important that the subject should ... indicate Research...NAMES and if possible relevant dates. I would re-iterate that Catholic Marriages from 1862/64 onwards can be ordered from Enniskillen Town Hall. Births from GRONI. The baptismal records are held in the local churches, showing parents, child and godparents.. Marriage records show bride and groom, fathers name and witnesses. The Church of Ireland or better known as Protestant marriages go back a little further. Cemetery records are very different, it has got to be understood that it cost money to erect a headstone so it does not mean that one's ancesters were not buried in a certain graveyard. Equally, it was and still is in the Catholic religion very important that one was buried in consecrated ground ie. the Catholic Church cemetery so it is possible that the Church will have records of the death , getting them is a different matter. There were many babies born who were not expected to live and were baptised by the midwife or handywoman but who survived and were not subsequently registered anywhere. This baptism took place to get rid of the original sin which enabled the baby to be buried in consecrated ground. Suicides were another matter which I am sure noone wishes to hear about. Sorry to be so pedantic but I know there is a mine of information between our listers and it would be a shame to allow the enthusiasm of many to be compromised by the perhaps unaware enthusiasm of the few. Maureen

This is for Mary McCaffrey Puccinelli Hello Mary, My name is Pat Clifford Tobin. I am researching Clifford, Cassidy, McCaffrey and recently McElroy. I saw your comment on the list about the Funeral and had to respond. There is a tie I have been looking for and I think you may be able to help. You can reply to me privately if you like.... My gggmother was Cecily McCaffrey who married John Clifford. They lived and died in Co Fermanagh. They had nine children: Bernard, Thomas, John, Bridget, Ellen, Mary, Peter, Edward and William. Ellen, Mary, William and Edward came the the US in the mid 1800's. Ellen, William and Edward lived and died in CO and Mary lived in Illinois. Bridget was my ggmother and lived and died in Ireland. She married Thomas Cassidy. They had 6 children, my gmother being the oldest daughter. She (Mary) and her sister Ellen came to the US under the sponsorship of William (their uncle) in the late 1800's. Recently, I found out that the McElroy's were first cousins to the Clifford's in CO. A Thomas McElroy was bestman at my gmother's wedding in 1891 in Denver. A Bridget McElroy was a godparent to one of her children. I am wondering if this is familier to you. I can't make a tie between the McCaffrey's and the McElroy's (until I saw your letter on the Fermanagh list). Appreciate your time, Pat in Denver

Hi there -- Neat list you were able to offer. Just wondering, what resource did you use to identify those marriages. I'd like to do a similar search for the HOWE and HAYDEN families if at all possible. Is this a resource I might be able to access? Thanks! Yes, Karen.... Fitzgibbon is at least easier to research than Smith! Didn't see any Fitzgibbon soldiers in the 76th Foot. The closest (in some sense of that word) would be WILLIAM FITZGIBBON in the 73rd Foot, from Inagh, Co. Clare. Maybe your relatives might take on a request to look at Kew the six men found for you. Didn't find one in the 76th Regt of Foot, did you? It certainly makes fascinating reading when a soldier can have his military records located. Puts flesh on the bones of a career in the army. Best of luck!
Dear Listers, If anyone has access to birth record indexes, I'd appreciate it if someone could do a look-up for me. I live in the US. It's just not possible for me to get to Ireland in order to do my own search. I'm looking for the birth parents of Richard Toomath b. 25 Jan 1864 in Lisbellaw, Co. Fermanagh. Any help would be appreciated. Cheri
