    1. Listowner.................Re: [FERMANAGH] Let ua all try
    2. Jane Lyons
    3. Ah but Bill, You also forgot to mention that not only are you a contributor - you are also the Listowner of the Fermanagh list :-) One thing though that you may not realise, at some stage you set the list properties so that all replies go to the list, I think we all do that at some stage. So, whenever anyone hits the reply to sender icon for this list as with many other rootsweb ones then only the list address comes up - and very many don't even realise they're replying to everyone and not just the one. Then, even if they do realise it many people don't know how to change it. and it's simple folks, all you have to do is delete the list address in the To bar and copy and paste in the address of the original sender. Jane ;-) ----- Original Message ----- From: "William J Flanagan" <williamjflanagan@cox.net> To: <FERMANAGH-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, July 03, 2002 9:10 PM Subject: [FERMANAGH] Let ua all try > If you can read this message - you have a computer. <snip> > I am a comtributor to these sites and fell justified in making this request. > My address is williamjflanagan@cox.net if you care to reply/comment.

    1. [FERMANAGH] Little surname
    2. William J Flanagan
    3. From: "The Book of Ulster Surnames", by Robert Bell ESBN # 0-85640-405-5 (paperback). Page 122. LITTLE; (also Lyttle) These names can be of English, Scottish or Irish origin and are most common in Dublin and in ULster, especially in Antrim and Fermanagh. The name is, of course, Engl;ish by original derivation and was descriptive of the bearer, froom Old English (lytel), meaning 'small' In Scotland, Little was the name of one of the lesser of the riding clans of the Borders. Neighbors of the Beatties, they were based in Eskdale and Ewesdale in Drumfriesshire and were recorded as one of the unruly clans of the West March in 1587. Little can also be a variant of Liddel, a territorial name from Liddel in Roxburghshire, and indeed the two names were recorded as synonymous in the Poyntzpass district in co Armagh towards the end of the 19th century. At the same time Little was recorded as a synonym of Beggan in co Monaghan. Beggan, Gaelic-(O Beagain or O'Beacain), was the name of a sept of the Clones-Roslea-Donagh area and most of this sept anglicised it to Little. However, it is clear that a large number of members of the riding clans of the Scottish Borders settled in Fermanagh at the time of the Plantation (1609-1620) and settlers called Little were recorded there in the 17th century. It will therefore be difficult, without a confirmed family tree, to determine the origins of any individual.

    1. [FERMANAGH] 1871 CENSUS AND CHURCH RECORDS
    2. I wonder if SKS could give me some advice. On the 1881 Census in Preston, Lancashire my grandmother's brother William ABBOTT is shown as aged 10, birthplace Fermanagh. Her sister Elizabeth ABBOTT is shown as aged 7, birthplace Belfast. Their parents Peter ABBOTT born in Lancashire and Isabella (nee RUTHERFORD) born in Scotland lived in Ireland for about 5 years, before returning to Preston. Peter was a catholic but Isabella was not. Their children were brought up as catholics. I sent to Ireland for a birth certificate for William born in Fermanagh about 1870/1 but they couldn't find the birth. Is there an 1871 Census for Fermanagh and are there catholic church records available to look for the births of William in Fermanagh and Elizabeth in Belfast? I also have ancestors who were born in Ireland - JAMES COLLINS, b. 1781, married in Preston in 1820 to Margaret Smellie from Scotland. JOHN DUDDY who married CATHERINE GORMAN. Their children were born in Garstang, Lancashire then settled in Preston and PATRICK COMER who married Eliza Jones of Broseley, Shropshire whose children were born in Bilston, Staffs then moved to Worsley near Manchester. If anyone else is researching these families I would love to hear from them. Any help would be very much appreciated. Thank you, Anne

    3. I am interested in finding the location of CLOUGH ISLE. My great uncle, James Armstrong, son of Johnston and Jane Armstrong, is listed on the Fermanagh Gold Web Site as having been born there in l864. I have not, however, been able to discover where it is or whether it is a townland etc. A suggestion was made that what might have been referred to was Clannaghisle. Am wondering if you might be able to identify it from the information you have. Thank you for your assistance.
