Elliot's History of the Parish of Devinish and Boho lists the Protestants of the parish in the 1841 census, with a William Porteus and wife Jane living in Giltagh townland. In same townland is a Robert Porteus, wife Anne, and 9 children. (There are others of the name in other townlands. ) Hope this helps, Janet Cassidy-Stroh

    1. MORTON / GRAY
    2. Kay & Patrick O'Brien
    3. Susan GRAY (dau of Samuel GRAY born c1839) married Mark MORTON (son of George MORTON and Mary BIRD born 6 January 1830) on 19 August 1863 at Newtown Butler, Co. Fermanagh, Parish of Galloon. Their daughter (my greatgrandmother) was born c March 1864 Virginia, Co. Cavan and the family migrated to Queensland, Australia when she was six months old. They arrived in Brisbane in September 1864. Mark worked as a lengthsman with the railway on arrival. Samuel Gray obviously had a strong influence on his daughter Susan, as for six generations the eldest son's birth has been registered with Gray as his second given name. Looking for a connection in Ireland. Regards Kay Maryborough, Qld, Australia

    3. My g-g-grandparents William Burleigh and Matilda (nee Wilson) were married in Fermanagh Co, N. Ireland sometime around 1834, then came to Canada. My searches indicated that Burleigh was not a common Northern Ireland name so I thought it would be easy to track. Apparently I have a lot to learn about searching because I am up against a brick wall at the moment. William was said to be 95 - 103 when he died in 1903, so I am not even sure of his birth date. Matilda I do have as born in 1818. My question is are there web sites that I could do more search on, a particular place in Ireland to write for more information or am I better off hiring someone in Ireland to search for me. When does one call in the professionals? Any suggestions? Bonnie lea@mail.reach.net

    3. Dear Members of the Fermanagh List: Only yesterday I discovered that you exist and subscribed to your list. My wife and I were in Ireland in June of last year and had the opportunity to spend several days in Ballyshannon from which we managed to drive all over Co. Fermanagh and the nearby parts of Cos. Donegal and Tyrone. My wife's great-grandmother was a Muldoon from Fermanagh and I am descended from the Anglo-Irish Brandon family, which to the best of my knowledge and research arrived there sometime in the early 1700's. My immigrant ancestor was one William Brandon, born, we believe, Magheraculmoney parish, near Kesh, in 1780. His parents were Gerard Brandon and Mary Brien. William left Ireland, with many other members of his family, in 1804 and settled in Huntington Mills, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. I have quite a bit of information on this family which I would more than happy to share should anyone be interested. And, I am always looking for other Brandon records or connections. I recently acquired the CD-ROM Index to Griffith's Evaluation, which as I recall was taken in Fermanagh in 1862, and would be more than happy to do look-ups for specific surnames should anyone be interested. Regards, Rich

    1. First Time Query - Enniskillen
    2. Greetings from Connecticut I am seeking information about the parents of my 2-great grandfather, Thomas HOWE and his wife, Elizabeth (Eliza) ARMSTRONG. According to his death record, Thomas was born 1 Jan 1825 in Enniskillen (Fermanagh) Ireland, the son of Ralph and Elizabeth (Armstrong) HOWE. He came to the U.S. before 1847, married Francis Jane LOOMIS in Troy, (Rensselaer) NY 11 Sep 1851. He had the following siblings - all assumed to have been born in Ireland: 1. John (c.1818-c.1865) lived in West Bloomfield, NJ, left 2 sons who could not be located in 1892. 2. James (1822-1892) lived in Troy, NY, apparently never married, left will bequeathing estate to brother, sisters, nephew and niece. 3. Mary (? - 1894) lived in Troy, NY, married 1) ? McVETY and 2) ? PERRY, she had a son Robert McVETY and a daughter Mary J. [not certain by which husband] who m. ? MULLIGAN 4. Eliza (1833 - aft 1904) lived in Troy, NY, married Robert CAMPBELL, had George (1867) and Anna (1869) 5. Ann (? - ?) married ? DALY, was in Enniskillen in 1892 and Drumsillagh?, Ireland in 1904. I would be greatful for any assistance in determining the ancestors of these folk - even the descendants of any of them. Suggestions are more than welcome. I will gladly do research in Connecticut for anyone so desiring in exchange. I am willing to pay copy fees, etc. Bill Stansfield: wtstans@aol.com

    1. BURLEIGH/BURLEY and Wilson
    2. Bonnie Hickson
    3. I am trying to locate where in Fermanagh Co. William (Albert?) Burleigh (often spelled Burley) who married Matilda Martha Wilson around 1834 in Fermanagh Co. came from. Matilda's parents names were James and Margaret (Emerson) Wilson. Shortly after marriage they came to Canada and raised 12 children. Some of the children's middle names were Irwin, Johnston and Egerton which take to be family names. William died in 1903 and Matilda in 1910, Hungerford Township, County of Hastings, Canada. Has anyone by chance come across these names in their search? Sure would make my day if you have any trails for me to take, at the moment I am at a standstill. Bonnie
