    1. Moore, McClintock, Douglas
    2. Ian Moore
    3. I am searching for data on the Moore, the Douglas and the McClintock Families. My grandfather, Joseph Moore was born in Barnfield, Cloyne on March 13, 1878 and he married Martha Jane McClintock from Aughinure in Christ Church, Maguiresbridge, Co. Fermanagh on February 26, 1908. Joseph was a landstewart in Drumgoon (?) prior to his marriage. They lived in Co Fermanagh from 1908 untill about 1913 during which time Annie Moore was born in Aughanure (1909), Mary Elizabeth was born in Lislane (1910), John William was born in Aghinure (1911) Martha moved back to Cork while my Grandfather fought in WW1. Charles Douglas (1914) and Winifred Moore (1913) were born in "Ringmahon"?, Blackrock Co Cork. Joseph (1916), George (1922), Richard (1924) & Catherine Moore (1926) were born in Enniskillen & Castlecaldwell. Martha had the following siblings: Anne (b. 1883), Robert James (1885), William John (1886), Alfred (1892), Elizabeth (1894), Douglas (1896) and Lily Josephine (1899). Martha's parents were Charles McClintock (B. ca 1855) & Mary Douglas (1855) Apparently my Grandfather, Joseph Moore, had 18 siblings but I have no information on any of them. He died in 1936 in Maguiresbridge, Co. Fermanagh. If any one can help with the Moore family or the McClintock or Douglas families I would appreciate it. Thanks, Ian

    3. Hello Kathy The description of AREA is as acres, rods, perches. This is the old Imperial land measurement and not generally in use today. The description of RENT is as Pounds, Shillings , Pence. Again the British monetary form at the time. My dictionary describes "moiety" as a "half". Plot 6 looks like it had been divided for separate leases. 1. CAUTHERS, BAVE, Enniskillen, Tempo, Presbyterian
    2. Dora Smith
    3. I am looking for the family of a Samuel Cauthers, born in Ireland about 1802 based on his age at death, who married in 1824 at a Presbyterian church in Montreal Jane Bave, and died in Montreal. He had atleast two children. John Cauthers was born in Quebec in 1823, from his age at death in Dec 1895 at age 72, of alcoholism, suggesting perhaps his father was previously married, lived and died in Montreal, married a woman from England, and had a son, Edmund, and four girls, one was my great grandmother. Samuel, born in Quebec about 1830 from his age in 1871 census, went to Ottawa, on the edge of Ontario, and married in the Roman Catholic cathedral there in 1856 and 1859, Catherine Meloney and Elizabeth Ford, and still lived in Ottawa in 1871 census, but may not have died there. I don't know where her family were from, but has anyone ever heard of the name Bave? Even with a different spelling, like Beve? Samuel Cauthers listed his birthplace as Quebec but his origin as Irish, suggesting that she, too, was Irish. There was another Cauthers family in Ontario. They were descended from Thomas, who settled in Dufferin, having come with his brother whose name I don't have in the 1820's to work on the Erie Canal. The brother supposedly went to Oregon or Washington, whre there is indeed a bunch of people named Cauthers. The name is so rare there are only two dozen phone listings for that name and six e-mail addresses in all of the U.S. and Canada. There is also a bunch of them in I think British Columbia, for some reason, and at one time there was a bunch in northern Michigan, I think quite possibly descended from Thomas, and I think they alternatively spelled their name Cathers. Which is a more common name. But my family seem to have known how to spell, and spelled their name with absolute consistency. John Cauthers was a clerk and accountant, and Samuel a hardware clerk. The descendent of Thomas who answered my mass six e-mail addresses e-mailing said her cousin who researched the family found that not all of the Cauthers in Ontario were related to each other. Some of them may be descended from my Samuel. According to both my Cauthers source whose cousin researched the family, (and whose records are buried in the attic), and also my own preliminary checking, there were only Cauthers in Ireland around Enniskillen and Tempo, Fermanagh County, Ireland. She may also ahve mentioned somewhere else, a town or a county, close by. I have found traces of them also in a place in Scotland, and two places in England. They had a tradition of having been Huguenots. In the REformation, people fled across the Channel by the tens of thousands in each direction, and I have another Irish Huguenot line - from Galway, also Protestant. Cauthers is an anglicized form of the name Gauthier. In fact, at the state mental hospital where my great grandmother, who had lifelong mental health problems, died, they got confused and typed her name on her death certificate as Gauther! BEcause the family was not of sound mental health and Quebec is how it is, and my great grandmother seemed decidedly over the edge on the subject of her "ENGLISH-Canadian" ethnicity, and Gauthier is a common name in Quebec, I thought until I proved he was Irish that John Cauther had anglicized his name! I would like to act on the notion that my Samuel is likely to be a Presbyterian from the area of Enniskillen and Tempo. How do I pursue that? One thing I'm not doing is going to Ireland. Yours, Dora Smith

    3. An administrative suggestion: Is it possible to move the repeated "unsubscribe" information to the end of each issue? The heading, Today's Topics and Administrivia, take up the top half of a page. For those of us who print out most issues, the extra two inches of Administrivia often push the important text to an extra page. If only Administrivia were on the last page, I could omit that page entirely. I hope this doesn't sound too picky. Certainly those subscribers who enjoy the newsletter, aren't interested in unsubscribing -- and, if they change their minds, could find the instructions on all back issues. Keep up the good work. I'm fascinated by it all. Linda

    1. MONTGOMERY & SCOTT
    2. Suzanne B Sommerville
    3. Hello All Still searching for any connections to George Montgomery, b. 1815 - 1819, Clay, Fermanagh, father Charles?, mother Mary? married 1840 in Lisnaskea to Elizabeth m/s Montgomery, b. 1819, Drumharriff, Fermanagh, father William Montgomery, mother Catherine SCOTT. One or both of these families may have also been in Ederdacurragh (or Currah) & Mullaghkippen in Aghalurcher or Derrybrusk Parish. I've seen Mullaghkippen assigned to both of these parishes in different references. Family story says George was a gardener for the Big House and that he and Elizabeth, the daughter of the house, eloped. George and Elizabeth were in Glasgow, Scotland, by 1846. I have the family located after that. Griffith's Valuation for Fermanagh was in 1862, so it's hard to make a link through property records. Tithe records are too sketchy, except to indicate that several Montgomery families were in Fermanagh in 1833 and also on the 1788 List of Freeholders.. A cousin (or possibly nephew) of either George or Elizabeth, William, was in Brooklyn, New York, when he sent word to the family in Scotland in 1905 that an Alexander Montgomery had died at age 32, 5 Jan 1900: Alexander Montgomery, son of the late Alexander and the late Sarah Johnston Montgomery. Alexander and Sarah were married 25 May 1863 in Lisnaskea by license. An ? Charters was witness. A Charters or Chartres is also associated with the Griffith's valuation for Mullaghkippin and several other locations. A brother of Elizabeth, Andrew, married an Ann or Agnes Dolahan (also born in Ireland) in Bothwell, Scotland, 1856. Andrew's mother was not said to be deceased, but his father was. Other possible siblings for Elizabeth: John, b. 1814, Ederdacurragh; Robert, b. 1822; Saragh, b. 1822, both in Drumharriff. There are apparently four Fermanagh townlands named Drumharriff. One is in Clones Parish. Griffith's valuation, 1862, shows a Richard Scott as an occupier of land whose immediate lessor was Earl of Erne. Another, in Cleenish Parish, lists Nicholas Scott twice, one occupier of land the lessor of which is Rebecca Gamble and the other John Daly. See a later post for the Griffith's Valuation for the Drumharriff in Aghalurcher Parish. Any suggestions? Thank you for reading Suzanne Sommerville In Michigan, USA
