Elliott (1990) includes a list from the 1841 census of the parish (Protestants only). For Dairies there is listed: John Burgess, wife Margt. family: Arthur, James, Anne, Margt. There is also a Gabriel Eliott, wife, Eliza and Andrew Elliott, wife Mary Anne, son William. There are other names in the townland as well. Unfotunatley no other info is given for this census, just names. George Elliott who wrote this book still lives in the area. He could probably put you in touch with any descendants of the Burgesses still there. I'm sure you could get in touch with him through the rector of the parish. Good luck, Janet C-S

    1. Burgess in Dairies, Fermanagh
    2. Searching for information about my ggg grandfather John Burgess, born 1766, in the Dairies, Co. Fermanagh. Here is what I know so far: John Burgess b 1766 m Margaret Irvine also born in the Dairies. They had Mary Burgess b 1806 m James Welsh (or Walsh) She died 1869 Jane Burgess b 1808 m John Earls and possibly second marriage to ? Wilson Elizabeth Burgess b 1810 m William Macutchion Arthur Burgess b. 11812 m Mary Balfour . He died 1873 Ann Burgess b 1816 William Broddy, and possibly second marriage to ?Mayhew John Irvine Burgess b 1820 m Nancy Irvine He died 1890 James G. Burgess b 1824 d 1904 Margaret Burgess b 1829 m Nov 24, 1850 James Little, son Job James, Mary Jane, John Irvine and Ann emigrated to Ontario and settled in and around Woodstock, Oxford Co. Arthur may have come later. I have a copy of a letter dated 1847 from John Burgess to his daughter Ann and there are other names of the region mentioned, which might interest someone else researching the Dairies. John Sr. died in 1850 at sea. Did that mean he was coming to Canada? His father's name was Arthur Burgess, but I have no more information about him. Is there anyone who has information on this family? There must be some descendants still living in Ireland, possibly still in the Dairies. I would like to hear from someone in Ireland or in Ontario. Thanks for your help. Terri Alcock, Victoria, BC, Canada

    3. I am searching for information on two surnames, Wilson and Johnston, from Enniskillen, Fermanagh County. This is what I know from family records. Thomas and Elizabeth Wilson, my GGG grandparents, were listed as Christopher Wilson's parents in his obituary. I would like to learn about them. Christopher was born in Enniskillen on January 18, 1822 and emigrated to Cincinnati, Ohio, USA about 1846. In Ohio in 1858, Christopher married Cecelia Sidney Johnston, born November 9, 1835 who was also from Enniskillen. Cecelia's parents were John Johnston and Anna Elliot Johnston who lived at Greystone Manor in Fermanagh County. I would like to trace them also. They came from Scotland originally. Lastly, Hugh Johnston and Marianna Johnston, Cecelia's sister and brother, emigrated to Mansfield, Victoria, Australia about 1850. Marianna married William Cotter who was a sea captain. Hugh was a sheep rancher. I would like to know what happened to them and any descendants. Thanks, Mary Glidewell Lawrence West College Corner, Indiana, USA

Thanks,>> Its not a dumb question, Rosemary. And you tried to find it yourself and couldn't, so nothing wrong with asking for help. I searched the online database of townlands of Ireland at: Search of IreAtlas TOWNLAND DATA BASE This database is incomplete as yet, but does include all townlands beginning with "F". I searched first in Fermanagh and found nothing even close in spelling, but in Co Tyrone I found three townlands named Freughmore. They are: Freughmore 244 acres, Barony: Clogher; Civ Par: Clogher; Poor Law Union: Clogher Freughmore 339 acres, Barony: Clogher; Civ Par: Donacavey; PLU : Omagh Freughmore 466 acres., Barony: Omagh East; Civ Par: Drumragh; PLU Omagh Also found Lissaneden 315 acres Bar: Omagh East; Civ Par: Dromore; PLU Omagh So, they didn't move far. You will need an ordnance survey map of great detail to find the townlands, though. On a larger scale map, look for the area around the towns listed for Poor Law Union. The Union is named after a nearby town, usually within a 10-15 mi radius. So your first one is closer to Clogher, the others nearer to Omagh. Good luck, Janet C-S

    3. Janet, I saw your note about your interest in the family MAGUIRE from County Fermanagh. My wife has family from Cleenish in Fermanagh. We have only just found out that the family came from Cleenish. I'm afraid we do not even know where it is in Fermanagh. I suspect that it would be in the South near the town of Clones as there is a family story about one of the grandchildren being named Clones after the area that they came from. Any help would be appreciated. Regards.
