I must have missed an explanation of what the "Fermanagh Story" is. I am trying to locate the Wherry Family. They lived in and around Tempo, Co. Fermanagh during the mid-1800's. Bob Ballston Spa, NY

In the course of telling history, many names get mentioned, mostly of course the "biggies" like Maguire, Hamilton, Archdale, etc. There is a section which gives a paragraph or so on each of the major original Gaelic names and the British "Planter" names. It does NOT give detailed genealogies or lists of records. It does have an index to every name in the book, but often the reference is simply to a name mentioned in a news story, such as who got arrested at the famous "Macken Fight." Still, its a worthwhile book to have in your library, mainly because it gives lots of history of the area, and an idea of what the times were like, etc. If you are very very lucky you may find a reference to your unknown small farmer or renter, but don't count on it! Janet C-S PS: The name Wherry is not mentioned.
Would the person who is researching Rev. Porteous please contact me? I think I have info for you. Janet C-S
Belated happy new year greetings all. Yes, Tom, there is mention of Cassidys in the book. 18 persons mentioned in the index of persons and 13 references to the surname. The author Fr. Peadar Livingstone, had some of his students (including one of my brothers) count the occurances of all Fermanagh surnames in the 1962 electoral register. The book contains a table of the 100 most common surnames and Cassidy was 13th overall and 5th of the old gaelic names native to Fermanagh. Although the book was first published by the Clogher (diocese) Historical Society in 1969, the currently available reprint (1990) is published by Hall's bookshop; (L.W.N. Hall, 32 Darling Street, Ennislillen, Co Fermanagh.) an excellent local bookshop always with something new on local history. I have no connextion with the bookshop (except that I cannot pass without entering when I am in Enniskillen). Unfortunately not on line so far as I am aware. Maurice Cassidy
Jennifer: Keep up the good work. My Armstrong family all came from Fermanagh and the Clones area, also Enniskillen area. My interest in your Pt. 3 is the name of George Armstrong and his wife Anne who lived on Kilmore, and also the name of Simon My Armstrong family lived on the townland of Kilmore from the late 1700s to approx. 1885 as the eldest son, Rev. John Armstrong was born on Kilmore in 1788 and the youngest son, Thomas, my gggrandfather, was born in 1808. There were 4 other brothers and 3 sisters. I dont have any info on them. Thomas remained on the farm and raised his eleven children there. I have been told that the father was a George Armstrong and his wife was Jane Lee, but not confirmed. George is not a very common name and it has not been carried on into the family. I havent had time to digest all the wonderful info you have sent but want to thank for your efforts and keep up the good work and it is appreciated. Donald J. Boyle Brantford, Ontario, Canada
I just signed up for Fermanagh Rootsweb so not sure if this is the correct procedure. I have scraps of pages from the Fermanagh Story. Wish I had it all but page 457 contains this about Gamble: " Gamble means the old one. The family arrived in Fermanagh from Scotland about 1620. Josias settled near Lisbellaw and his son, Josias, at Bannaghmore near Enniskillen. John Gamble (1770-1831) was an esteemed author and he described life in his native Ulster. There were about 20 Gable voters in Fermanagh in 1962. One family seat was at the Graan. Some of the family emigrated to Lancashire." I ordered the book through interlibrary loan but was disappointed as the list of soldiers was not in the copy I received. The copy I used was a copy of the original and some sections were not included. I am seeking information on the Edward Walmsley b. ca/ 1792 om Ardvarney Parish of Magheraculomoney. He died 2 Jan. 1852 in Drumconnis. His son Charles m. Mary Montgomery. Charles' son James John m. Sarah Atkinson of Magerfelt Ballymuckilhainery. James John was my grandfather and immigrated to US about 1880. I was fortunate enough to visit Enniskillen in May, 1998 but have not found new information.

I am seeking information on the immigration of my grandfather John McGuire{ Maguire} b.1823 County Fermanagh Ireland. His wife Rose O'Keefe { Keeffe} b. 1839 County Fermanagh Ireland. Their Children Michael Henry McGuire b. 1858, Frances J. McGuire b. 1860, Charles Thomas McGuire b.1863 Ontario Canada. Mary Ann McGuire b. March 27, 1864 Mitchell Ontario Canada. The John McGuire family immigrated to Canada in 1861-1862 I do not know which port they embarked from or the ship they came to Canada on. I have the feeling they entered Canada through Point Levis Quebec. So if anyone out there has any information on Passenger lists from that time 1861-1862 on ships arriving in Canada from Ireland at any port I would greatly appreciate hearing from you. Iam at a dead end in trying to obtain information on my grandparents and their family before immigrating to Canada, I would also appreciate any suggestions on how to go about obtaining information from County Fermanagh, Ireland. Thank you, Charles (Pat) McGuire
I might as well get on the bandwagon---would the person with "The Fermanagh Story" look for Thomas and Ann Keenen? E-mail address is: cdfemma@e-mail.msn.com. Thank you so much. Carole
Somebody on the list wanted details on ARMSTRONGS in Fermanagh. I have quite a number of pages done by a researcher in the early 1960's for my husbands family line. I will not post any more if the List owner feels it would clog up the lines so to speak. Let me know the feelings of the list please before I go any further. Regards...Jenny..Kyneton..Vic..Aus. Looking for researchers of the name CRAWFORD in Co Fermanagh. I have recently found a Mary Crawford married Inishmacsaint 1802 to Henry Dundas, Bolusty townland and raising family thereafter. She would have been born about 1780, probably Inishmacsaint. Anybody have any Mary Crawfords in their tree? Doug Fletcher
Hello, This is my first posting. My gg grandparents were James Douglas MORRISON, b. 1824 and Mary ARMSTRONG, b. 1826. They lived in the Maguires Bridge area near Enniskillen and emigrated to the US in 1870 with 7 children. I would like to know if the Fermanagh Story details the plantation of Scots such as the MORRISONS by William III in the 1600s; or where in time does the Story begin? Family lore says that James Morrison emigrated because his brother had gotten involved with some unsavory characters and gambled away his (James) 5-acre plot of land via a forged signature on an IOU. I know it's along shot, but considering the incident may have generated a good bit of scandal, might the Fermanagh Story chronicle such an event? Also, any enlightenment in general on the MORRISON family in the Maguires Bridge area would be most appreciated. Thanks, Sandi Bruce Galveston Island TX sandi@nol.net
