    1. Re: MAGURN surname
    2. Pat Traynor
    3. The only listing for McGurn and McGurin in "Irish Pedigrees", by O'Hart is in reference to Irishmen outside of Ireland. The names may be spelling variations, or corruptions of the MacGAURAN name below. Two Lt.s mustered out in 1864 and 65 from The 164th (or Third) Regiment of Corcoran's Irish Legion. (New York State Volunteers). ----------------------------------------------- MAGAURAN: Of this family is McGOWRAN, an anglicised form of the Irish, MacSAMHRADHAIN. ------------ The McGOVERNS or McGOWRANS are of the Hy-Briuin race, descended from Brian, first King of Connaught of the Hy-Niall sept, and brother of the monarch Niall of the Nine Hostages who is of the O'Neil of Tyrone pedigree. They were lords and chieftains of the ancient barony of Tullaghaw, county Cavan. "MacGauran's Country" was about 16 miles long by seven wide. There is a list of their chiefs from 1220 to 1532 in O'Donovan's "Four Masters". Bernard and Joseph McGovern, brothers, wrote a History of the Clan. Both living in 1887. ------------- McGivern is probably a variation of McGovern, one of the anglicised spellings of The Gaelic; MacSamhradhain. Sambradh is Irish for summer. Other spellings are; MAGAURAN, MacGAURAN, MacGOVERN, McGOWRAN, SAURIN, SOMERS and SUMMERS. The MAGAURANs were Lords of an area of Cavan county in ancient times. See "O'Hart's Irish Pedigrees" Vol 1 pgs 573 and 790 for the MAGAURAN pedigree. The book can be found in many genealogical libraries. ----------------------------------------------------------- Quoting..... 3. Hi Does anyone have access to Almanacs or Directories from 1850's-1870's that cover the Tyrone/Fermanagh area? I am specifically looking for any info that would make reference to school teachers (masters) at National Schools. The name I am interested in is George EVANS. cheers Richard This e-mail, and any attachment, is confidential. 3. Hello Nita, I have just found your email through the Fermanagh-L list, thanks to Lynda Bell's response. Do you have a Robert McKnight born c 1823, Co Tyrone, Son of William McKnight and Mary (Dixon)? Helen Harris has given me some information, including that he married c 1842 to Matilda Semple and had three sons and a daughter before her death c 1850 . He married Jane Stewart, and they emigrated to Australia in 1864. He is my gg grandfather. I would love to hear more of Matilda Semple if anyone has any information. Maureen Pollard Brisbane, Aust.

    3. Donna, If you live in the USA, first search the records in the county where your ancestors lived. I did that for my Irish ancestors. I went to the Probate Court in the county seat and got copies of their birth certificates. That gave me the county and their parents names right away. Once you have the county they were from you can start there. I am assumimng they immigrated to the US. Let me know if I can help. Carole Lannom in USA- OH Searching: BREEN, LOGAN, CONNER, CAIN

    1. MAGURN surname
    2. Thomas Dunn
    3. Hello Folks, In the U.S. the name MAGURN is very scarce. Massachusetts has the largest number of families of this name, but that is only about a dozen. The earliest Magurn to arrive in America that I am aware of was Edmund/Edward Magurn and his wife Anne Riley. They came ~ 1840 with at least two children. I don't know where they left from. Others who are looking for the Magurn's all suggest Fermanagh or Tyrone as the likely home of the Magurn's. Questions, if I may: 1) Is the Magurn name rare in these counties? 2) Is anyone on this list researching this surname? 3) Is Magurn a varient of Maguire, or has it always been a unique name? If anyone is kind enough to respond it will likely raise additional questions. Regards Tom Dunn

    3. Crawford, Devenish is both an island in Lower Lough Erne (south end) and a parish of Fermanagh. See Public Records Office Northern Ireland web site for parish information: http://proni.nics.gov.uk/geogindx/parishes/par095.htm You might want to invest in the OS map that covers the parish: Ordnance Survey of Northern Ireland Discoverer Series Sheet 17 (ISBN 1-873819-30-7). This is a modern day map of the area - perhaps others on the list might be able to supply details of obtaining older maps? Hope this helps you. 1. Re: Pettigo/gravestones/Irvine
    2. Linda Hawkins
    3. Hello Lynne. You are more likely to be lucky than most others posting to this list, because the Irvines were the local landed gentry; after whom Lowtherstown was renamed to Irvingstown. The parish of Derryvollen includes the town and quite an area around it. Therefore, here are a few suggestions: 1: go into rootsweb's home page: www.rootsweb.com and search the archives for THIS list. You will find many references there to Irvine, posted by listers during the past year or so. 2: Go to your nearest LDS (Mormon) Family History Centre, and pay the low fee (about $3-50 or so) for them to order in from Utah, the microfilm reel/s for the Derryvollan/ Derryvullan, Derryvollen, etc. parish Church of Ireland at Irvinestown, County Fermanagh. You should find in there IRVINEs that will keep you writing and/or printing copies for weeks on end. 3: Visit Jan HART's Fermanagh Gold site, and its accompanying Fermanagh Millenium Presents site, and search under IRVINE -- again, I am sure that you will find a lots of hits. 4: Check the PRONI (Public Record Office of Norther Ireland) web site: www.proni.niks.gov.uk (I think their URL is something like that -- anyway, any internet search engine should find it for you). They have a portion on their web-site dedicated to "Estate Records". You will probably find listings of the Irvine / Castle Irvine estate records. My guess is that somewhere in there you will find an IRVINE genealogy already done for you. 5: as they were a landed family, you should look at something like Burkes Irish Landed Gentry, which large libraries might hold. I expect that IRVINEs will have large chunks of that. That should keep you busy for a few years. If you need more help after that, come back to the list; where I know that there are many others who are better qualified than I am to assist you further. Good Luck! 1. Request to place Jan HART's Fermanagh Gold URL in message footer please.
    2. Linda Hawkins
    3. Hello List Owner. Would it be possible to place a brief reference to Jan HART's Fermanagh Gold site in the footnote message which seems to be automatically placed at the foot of each posting please? This is done on the Tyrone or Donegal newsgroup (sorry that I cannot remember which -- maybe both). I make this request, because when I occasionally reply to someone's question, by saying to check Jan HART's site; I always receive about 5 direct personal requests for the URL; which I do not include in my original reply, in the mistaken assumption that everyone subscribed to the list would know of it. Regards & thanks everyone for a very enjoyable list. ray hawkins in sydney australia

    3. Hi, Nita I'm interested on what you have on your HETHERINGTON line. Any chance you have any connections with the following? John HETHERINGTON & Elizabeth ROSS married ca. 1824? Their son, James HETHERINGTON b. abt. 1825, married Phobe JOHNSTON at Tubrid Church, Drumkeeran in 1850 and likely lived in Magheracross before moving to Glasgow. Children: Johnston, James, John, Sarah, Mary Ann, Thomas, Jane, and Andrew. The latter four were born in Glasgow between 1863 and 1877. Here's hoping! 3. I have been looking for my g-grandfather Cornelius(Neal)Sween(e)y for a long time. I have just discovered that at the age of 26 he left Enniskillen and boarded the Brig Eleanor at Londonderry. His destination was Saint John, New brunswick, Canada. He was traveling with Daniel age 20, Hannah age 20, and Mary age 22. His occupation was listed as weaver. They arrived in Canada May, 1834. This is my first attempt to search in Ireland. I would be grateful for any information telling me where I might begin to search to discover more about Cornelius(Neal) Sween(e)y and his family. Perhaps I might really be fortunate and some one on the list is also searching this Sween(e)y family. I welcome all suggestions, help and information. Thank you very much. Ceil Delaware,USA
