    1. CO FERMANAGH / CO CORK QUESTION
    2. John T. Lannom
    3. I live in the USA and just checked a map of Ireland Counties closely for the first time. I found my gg-grandfather, John Breen, and his father - my ggg-grandfather, David Breen, listed in Griffiths Valuation in Co Cork. I found a marriage record for my John Breen and wife Ellen Logan in Enniskillen, Co Fermanagh. Their first child was born in the US in Ohio in 1861. Could it be possible John and Ellen Breen married in Enniskillen, Co Fermanagh just before they immigrated to the US? Is there a common Port of Departure near there? I havn't found many ships sailing in the years 1860/1861 from Ireland to the US. Thank you. Carole Lannom

    3. Dear all, I would be very grateful if anyone could provide any further leads on the following: Patt Scollin x(2) Mary Thompson m. 9/Sep/1865 Longrob, Devenish, Fermanagh (May well be RC around or before this time, later switch to C of I) offspring: John b. 23/Aug/1866 Ely, Devenish, Fermanagh Maragret b. 1867 ?? Hugh b. 1871 ?? James b. 5/Jan/1873 Patrick FLANEGAN b. 14/Jan/1877 Jeanie b. ?? Patrick has relatives (probably siblings) Hugh & Ann and was a widower at the time of his marriage to Mary Thompson. James emigrated to Scotland by 1901 (m in Glasgow), John remained in Ireland with possibly descendents still in Enniskillen. Surname has various different spellings: SCOLLEN, SCOLAN, SCOLIN, SCHOLAN Regards, Andrew Scholan Cambridge, England.

    1. The Brick Wall Department
    2. Fellow Listers, It is my turn to pass around my Irish ancestors, to see if anyone out there might just be looking at some of the same folks. My g-g-grandfather was named James Elliott, born about 1792. He married Anne Jane Dunbar in Dublin in 1834. They produced children, seven of whom reached adulthood, apparently in Coolcrannel. James died in 1852. I am led to believe James had a brother named John , because there was a John Elliott who acted as guardian of the children until 1859. It was at that time that the oldest daughter, my g-grandmother, Annie reached age 21. She married a John Forde (who survived the war in the Crimea) about 1860. Along with the second daughter, Margaret, Annie and John emigrated to Canada. This much has come from old family documents, but I know nothing of James or his parents, and when he came to Ireland from Scotland (I am led to believe that ALL Elliotts came from Scotland). I know nothing of Anne Jane Dunbar except that she was born about 1819. I know nothing so far of Coolcrannel, except that it is nearby to Maquiresbridge. I am all but certain they were Cof I. I know further, through letters to my grandfather from the oldest son, John, that he had emigrated to Liverpool, as had his sister, Mary Jane, I have learned through reading in this list that there are a bunch of Elliotts in the neighborhood , as well as a Dunbar or two. Maybe, just maybe, one of you knows one of mine. I suspect Griffith's might not be too helpful, although the land remained in family hands for some time. The Tithe Applotment might very well help. Our state library has neither. I have learned much from all of you and am warmed by the generosity that is displayed in your helping one another. Cordially, Marion Wood Salem, OR

Could someone please give me more info on Corraglass? Is it a town, or farm? >> It's neither. It's a "townland", a geographical division. For a definition, (though a rather confusing one!) see the PRONI site at : http://proni.nics.gov.uk/geogindx/geogindx.htm and click on "glossary of terms." Don't think in terms of "village" or "hamlet." Its a rural division. A townland usually includes several farms, anywhere from one or two to thirty or more, depending on the size of the farm and the size of the townland. In Fermanagh, along with the nearest post town, it is also the person's address, for example: J Smith, Drumgormly, Derrygonnelly, Co Fermanagh. (Drumgormly the townland, Derrygonnelly the nearest post office) Hope this helps, Janet C-S

On both Jan 24 & 25 I sent a request for help to [email protected] and it was not published. This reply I am using is the last entry I have from here and I hope this route accomplishes something. My request: Can anyone give me guidance to locate the place, town or area in Fermanagh where my grandfather's family came from? GREATgrandfather was Francis Trainor who married Catherine McElroy (dtr of William &Bridget McElroy) sometime around 1860. They had 9 children that I know of: Francis, William, Patrick (who was my grandfather), Margaret, Daniel, Teresa, Philip & Roseanna. The 9 children & mother Catherine moved to the States, possibly at 2 or 3 different times, settling in Providence, RI. They all remained here, married, raised families & died here. They were Roman Catholic. I don't know what happened to Ggfather, Francis or why he did not come to the States. All official records I have researched here just say that they came from Fermanagh, Ireland, without reference to town, city or parish. I have written to various places in Ireland but have struck out. How successful are the searches that you pay for first? Any & all help will be greatly appreciated. 1. Re: Parish and townland information County Fermanagh
    2. Linda Hawkins
    3. Hello Donna. Sorry to say this, but this probably means that you have a lot more research to do in your own country -- from your e-mail address I am guessing that this is the USA. Work backwards through certificates of birth, death and marriage in a direct line. The USA marriage and or death certificates for your original immigrants MIGHT have this info. on them. Similarly, (I am NOT familiar with ANY U.S. state's certificates) the birth certificates for any of their children in the USA might give that info. However, your BEST bet will probably be by finding their original immigration into the country. Then the immigration and shipping records might give this info. Of course, try the usual most basic genealogy methods of seeking out family members who might have old records, the information, etc. You could try a stab in the dark, like the rest of us do at times, of searching Jan HART's Fermanagh Gold site, under the surnames that you are seeking. You never know, you might be in luck if someone has sent in info. which includes your people. (Hint, hint --- and Jan might not appreciate my adding to her workload --- you might be able to add to that site if you transcribe one index or document which you are working on -- to help others too). And of course there is the rootsweb search facility which might also throw something up. I hope that this might help you. Good Luck. regards: ray hawkins in sydney australia ----- Original Message ----- From: "Donna Agro" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, January 24, 2001 8:46 AM Subject: Parish and townland information County Fermanagh > Hi . > Maybe someone can help me with a general type question.
