Does anyone know where I can purchase a good map of Fermanagh. I am looking for a map of Currghmore, civil parish of Drumkeeran. Thanks Lori
I am looking for information relating to my 3rd Great Grandfather. The only information I have which was passed down through the family is that he left Fermanaugh County via Londenberry and arrived in Boston Oct. 14, 1719. He came to the US as a widower with children - there is confusion about whether be brought two or three children with him. The different listings say he came with "William, Robert and Nancy" another account states that William was born in the US. After being in US for a while he married a widow also from Ireland by the name of Mary Kelly. Does anyone know how I can go about checking out this family line? Any suggestions or information is appreciated. Joan Bartlett
Hi Listers Does anyone know anything about the Emerys who owned EMERY'S HOTEL, well-established in Irvinestown in 1925? Or anything, including Christian names, about O. EMERY and J. EMERY who helped put out a fire in Irvinetown's main street in 1913? Regards SANDRA from AUSTRALIA
Hello listers, These two posts were sent to the KERR list by David Kerr and are reproduced here, in their entirety, with his permission. They may be of some interest to those researching KERR in Fermanagh. Best wishes, Valerie Henshaw Melbourne, Australia (P.S. Apologies if this appears twice. I sent it on Feb 5th but it hasn't appeared on the List to date.) Subject: list of some Irish Kerr/Karr/Ker/Keer/Carr wills Date : Tue, 23 Jan 2001 12:22:25 -0000 From: David Kerr <[email protected]> To: [email protected] Hello I hope these are of use to someone in their search for Irish Kerr roots. Last night I copied these notes from several books in the posession of the Irish National Library in Dublin. Please be aware that these are not the only wills registered in Ireland, there are a lot more in the National archives in Dublin and in the records offices in Belfast for the 6 counties. The spellings of names & places are exactly as they were typed in the original books (I have made no changes). I always recommend that you check the original source for additional information, remember these are just abstracts & not the actual wills which are held in the National Archives of Ireland If I copy any more wills then I will forward them to the list. Hi all I know this might be a big favour to ask, but I have used the official channels for this with no result. My grandad was born in Belleek but although I could find his baptism record from 3 weeks after his birth, neither the Belfast nor the Dublin Records office could find a birth record for him when I submitted all known details to them. Perhaps someone has access to the records and could do a more intuitive search for all births that particular day, in case his name was spelt wrong (or was even missing). If you are wondering why I need his birth record when I already have his baptism record, it is because I am told I need his birth certificate to apply for Irish citizenship. If anyone knows that this information is incorrect, please let me know! The details are as follows: Name: James PRICE Date of birth: 23 March 1886 Place of birth: Belleek, Fermanagh Father: James PRICE Mother: Annie Langley Nairn PRICE (née ARMSTRONG) He was baptised on 18 April 1886. While it was customary to baptize infants soon after birth, sometimes a much longet time elapsed. (Sometimes the church record indicates this.) So I'd look as much as 2-3 years before the baptism, AND include either simply "mae child" in your search, or even the possibility of another name. Occasionally a child is given one name at birth and then is baptised with another, or called by his middle name. Another idea, check the 1901 census, and see how old he is there. You might also check Belleek school records--maybe they recorded his birth date. Good luck! Janet C-S
Hi Jack I also quite recently read that book and, as you said, it did demolish quite a number of Family Myths. What interested me the most was that a large percentage of those Border reivers, who either went over, or were transported, to Co Fermanagh, married into my EMERY FAMILY, emigrated to Australia, where they intermarried all over again.. The Armstrongs, according to Fraser, were the worst reivers of the lot and, being prolific breeders, have heard there was an Armstrong in almost every Irish Family which settled at Kiama, a small Australian south coast township which, back then, was commonly known as "Little Fermanagh". To uncover more of the truth, the follow-up for me will be a book on the Ulster Plantation ie were they willing, or were they pushed? Regards SANDRA from AUSTRALIA
Is there anyone on this list in Ireland or NI who is a lawyer/attorney/barrister? Thanks, Janet C-S
Hi List: Since I just sent this post to my own CASSIDY-L, I thought I'd post it on Fermanagh as well, just in case. My CASSIDY emigrant was Patrick CASSIDY (b 1804) probably in Drumgormly townland, near Derrygonnelly in Co Fermanagh Ireland. He married Mary McCaffrey(b 1816) and moved to the US about 1842 with their 4 oldest children (Peter, Mary, Charles, and my ggrandfather--Patrick Francis b 1841) had 5 more there ( Ann Virginia, Mary Catherine, Elizabeth, Catherine, Edward Francis). (Mary Catherine and Catherine both died in infancy.) Patrick wrote poetry, sometimes under the penname Knockmore. He died in 1894. Mary's cousin, Peter B O Flanagan (b 1807) was from Aghakeerin townland and moved to the US to enter the Jesuits. He became pastor of Holy Trinity parish in Georgetwon, DC. Possible siblings of Patrick are Michael and Francis Cassidy and Bridget Cassidy McBrien (McBrine). Other related families in Fermanagh are Flanagan and Love. I'd love to hear from descendants of Patrick and Mary's other children. Or anyone who has traced descent from the Derrygonnelly area. Janet C-S
Hello, I would like to hear from anyone who is researching McCaffreys from the town of Newtownbutler in Fermanagh. Thank you. Kathy
The Roman Catholic Parish containing Ederney is now known as Culmaine a short version of the original Magherculmoney but in my younger days was always referred to as Black Bog. The original Black Bog Church, about a half a mile from the village is now a coal store with the new Ederney Chapel in the village. The local Parish Priest is Fr. Havlin and he lives in the village of Ederney. Fr. Havlin, Ederney, County Fermanagh, N. Ireland will reach him by post - Telephone 02868631315. Montiagh (correct spelling) is one of the two other churches in his parish about five miles to the north of Ederney. Regards, John Cunningham.
Dear Listers: On the list of churches in Ederney, there is one listed as "Church at Moniagh". Can anyone tell me what and where Moniagh is? Also, I don't get my own messages to the Fermanagh list sent to me. Should they be? Perhaps I am missing a lot of answers to my questions. Mary

About the Records: Thanks to financial support from the Friends of the Archives of Ontario, the Archives has acquired a set of highly significant Canadian immigration records from Columbia University. While at Columbia, they were known as the Toronto Emigration Office Records, or more informally as the Hawke Papers. These records, which date from 1831-1892, were mainly compiled by Anthony Bowden Hawke and his successor J. A. Donaldson. Hawke was the first specialized emigrant agent assigned to assist immigrants in settling Upper Canada (which became Canada West, and then Ontario). He served as Chief Emigrant Agent for a number of years. This important collection is now part of the Archives' larger collection of Provincial Immigration Records (RG 11). It includes official correspondence and records which document assistance provided to immigrants in the form of transportation, food, and shelter. Of particular note are records of assistance provided to widows, orphans, and others who fled to Canada during the difficult Irish famine time period. Earliest in date are financial records containing accounts of A.B. Hawke, Peter Robinson, Alexander McDonell and others. While the records originate mainly from the Toronto and Kingston emigrant offices, records of arrivals and destinations pertaining to other locations are also included. Some registers document the arrival of young children, including "Barnardo's Boys", who were among the more than 100,000 British Home Children sent to Canada between 1870 and 1940. These papers will be of immense value to genealogists and scholars studying immigration patterns and conditions of life in nineteenth-century Ontario. As of Thursday, February 1, 2001 microfilm of these important records will be available to the public in one of two ways: (1) In person, in the Main Reading room of the Archives of Ontario (77 Grenville Street, Toronto, Ontario) on self service microfilm. Information about the opening times of the main reading room are available on the Archives of Ontario Web page at the following link - http://www.archives.gov.on.ca/english/about/locate.htm (2) On interloan from the Archives of Ontario to your local library. To find out more about the Archives of Ontario Interloan program and to determine what is available for loan please see the online Interloan catalogue at the following Archives of Ontario web page: http://www.archives.gov.on.ca/english/interloan/index.html or the separate page for the Immigration records at: http://www.archives.gov.on.ca/english/interloan/i-immigration-t.htm For more information about the records and to see samples of original pages, visit the Archives' website at: http://www.archives.gov.on.ca/english/interloan/hawkes.htm Important Note: THE ARCHIVES OF ONTARIO IS NOT ABLE TO CONDUCT RESEARCH. Microfilm copies of the records may be accessed using one of the two methods described above. ------------------------------------------------------------------ ______________________________________________________________________ This list is provided by SLA as a service to its members. Recently, this book was mentioned in the Fermanagh site. The Steel Bonnets, The Story of the Anglo-Scottish Border Reivers By George MacDonald Fraser This book (paperback) is listed in the Winter 2001 catalog of Reading & Writing, from A Common Reader & New York Review of Books. #0503 404 pages US$ 22.95 Orders according to the catalog: 1-800-832-7323 or commonreader.com I have no affiliation with this publisher, however I did read the book several years ago. Included are demolition of several family myths and some factual renderings of history which de-romanticize the era. Many of the families appear, often reluctantly and at sword point in Ireland once the crowns of England and Scotland are united. For those researchers of Scottish families in Ireland this could be an excellent source. This concludes my only foray into book reviews. Hi, friends. I just shifted focus to County Cavan this week. Having spent many profitable hours reading Livingstone's "The Fermanagh Story" I have shifted focus a little to the south and wonder if there is such a scholarly history reference for County Cavan. If so, price and availability, etc. Many thanks. Doug
HI, friends: Now I'm testing another hypothesis and need help from someone like a Michael Clarke of the early 1800s! I would like to superimpose on top of my OS Sheet # 27 map of Upper Lough Erne a map that shows roughly where the lake level was in about 1811, long before it got drained down. That's when my gr, gr grampa Christopher LYTLE/LITTLE/LYTTLE/LIGHTLE who may have been employed/farmed in the north of county CAVAN was courting his bride-to-be who may have been employed in Crom Estate. In their marriage record of 28 Apr 1812, she was of Aghalurcher Parish, and his folks of Rossorry Parish up by Enniskillen. I suspect it may have been more efficient to commute by boat, than to walk or ride horses. Many thanks again. Doug
My gggrantfather was James Elliott, born in 1824. In 1849 he married Martha/Matty Kearns. They had at least two sons - John & Isaac (1849 & 1867). There is a large space between these two sons, so I'm sure there were more children. John married Catherine Hilliard in 1875 in Irvinestown, County Fermanagh. They had seven children: MaryJane/Minnie, Susan, Catherine/Cassie, Martha Jessie, John James, George & Joseph Isaac. Minnie & Cassie came to New York City in the 1890s & George came about 1912 and later moved to Canada. If any of this sounds familiar, I'd love to hear from you. - Jane Dixon Anderson in Connecticut, USA >From: [email protected] >To: [email protected] >Subject: The Brick Wall Department >Date: Wed, 31 Jan 2001 19:56:54 EST > >Fellow Listers, > It is my turn to pass around my Irish ancestors, to see if anyone >out >there might just be looking at some of the same folks. > My g-g-grandfather was named James Elliott, born about 1792.
