does anybody know the film numbers for the actual griffiths valuations for County Fermanagh & County Tyrone? NOT the index #'s...
My ggrandmother was Mary McCAFFREY of near Derrygonnelly (probably Lisdead) who married Patrick CASSIDY (probably from Drumgormly) and emigrated about 1841 to WashDC, US. Mary had a cousin named Peter B O Flanagan, who became a Jesuit priest in the US> His family was from Aghakeerin, on the border of Devenish and Boho parishes. It is also known that Mary had several women relatives in DC, 1.) Catherine McCaffrey (b Mar 1848) who married a William KEMP (born in NB, Canada) 2.) Elizabeth ____? (b 1839) who married Francis GALLAGHER in Ireland and emigrated in 1860. Elizabeth supposedly was married before, and had 2 or 3 children. Her husband disappeared and she married GALLAGHER and emigrated to the US before 1867. It is not known what happened to the older children (they may have died young), but she had 3 children with Gallagher (John, Joseph, and Elizabeth Agnes) after they were in the US. These women many have been Mary McCaffrey's cousins or nieces. I'd like to connect with anyone researching GALLAGHER from Co Fermanagh, esp from the Derrygonnelly area. Janet C-S
I thought I would share a success story that has proven to me once and for all that there are both good and bad ways to request information on mailing lists. I have been lurking, posting, assisting (where possible) and generally doing "all the usual things" that one does on a list. For a considerable period of time I got absolutely minimal responses to my postings requesting help with various individuals/families. Of course, I blamed the other list members for not being sufficiently sympathetic to my needs, but then I took a different tack and have had a tremendous response as a result. I am researching three forests, and when I look at the three ancestor charts, I find I have 61 dead-ends. So, here's what I have done: (1) Created a message for EACH terminating person. (2) Made the subject line reflect that person with, in the format SURNAME: Location (or Poss/Prob Location) and a year span (sometimes quite wide (e.g. 1700 - 1800)) (3) Prepared an Outline Descendant Chart for THAT person - limiting it usually to only 3 generations (sometimes more, depending upon size - occasionally producing one that is "a little too long", but I try to avoid this) (4) Copy that chart into the body of the message, with as little preamble as possible. Consequently, listers can immediately see from the subject whether or not the message is of interest; then, with minimal scrolling, can get to the details that may or may not confirm their interest. After getting very few responses, this new approach has meant that I have an almost full-time job just answering the specific replies that I receive. IT DEFINITELY WORKS FOR ME. I could go on about meaningless subject lines, and padding messages with all sorts of details about the people, but I don't want to sound as if I am in some way "laying down the law". I want to be constructive, but the simple fact that subjects such as: Posting interest, New to List, My brick wall, Need help, etc., etc. just don't do the job. If someone out there can help you, it is meaningless whether you are new to the list or not. In short, "cut to the chase" and I am confident that the results will be greatly improved. If the descendant you are tracing has an interesting history, this can be exchanged AFTER initial contact has been made with a respondent. While it may be interesting we have to face the probability it is only interesting to ourselves; and it could be the very reason that someone who has the information you need fails to read far enough to get the link. Give it a go - it works for me. And, now having broken one of my own rules about keeping it brief, I shall sign off. -- Unless stated to the contrary at the beginning of the text, this message may be considered to be in the public domain and may be copied, distributed, forwarded, etc. without infringing upon any copyright to which I may normally be entitled. Do the Tithe Lists or Flax lists provide any family information for those individuals listed - including son's, daughter's names, etc., perhaps in a separately available document. Any comments would be appreciated. Thank you. Jack Cassidy
Does anybody have this CD? I am thinking about buying it but I am curious if it is just the INDEX to the Griffith's Valuation or if it contains both the index & the actual VALUATIONS? Patrick
I am trying to find the location of Carrick and Dromore on my #17 Ordnance Survey Map of Fermanagh and have only found Carrick House and Dromore Hill between Derrygonnelly and Largalinny. Does anyone know if these two landmarks indicate the whereabouts of these towns? Also, has anyone on the list ever accessed the Ely Papers that deal with the Loftus/Hume/Tottenham families' estates, especially Ely Lodge. Largalinny is listed as one of the townlands in the estate - I wonder if tenants are listed. Was there a militia composed of tenants organised by the estate (especially in the late 1700s to mid 1800s)? I look forward to new insights!
Dear Fellow Listers I noticed that in Digest #47, a Mr. Teevan was mentioned in Bunahone. I am searching for my Teevan ancesters somewhere in Ireland. My James Teevan was born in 1835 and emmigrated to Canada in 1870 along with his wife Elizabeth (McKuen), son patrick and daughter Elizabeth. Griffiths Evaluation shows Teevan's in Cavan & Fermanagh. Death certificates and census records here in the U.S. does not mention the county in Ireland. My only living older relative says they came from Cork. I found on record of them in Cork. I firmly believe that is where they sailed from and since another son was born in 1872 in Canada, I believe that is where they landed. I would appreciate any help or guidance you could give me. I,m really hitting a brick wall now. It seems as if they really didn't exist. Thank you Verna [email protected]

To all of you who have replied on St Peter's location, I thank you very much. I was born and raised in Baltimore. All my relatives lived and died there during the mid 1800's to the present time. I have an original purchase document for a grave site in St Peter's from late 1860's signed by my Great Grandfather Campaigne who was from county .Cavan. I appreciate all those who responded and hope that that I may be able to help each of you in some way in the future.

Tammie Thought perhaps you would be interested in this lease !!! Dated January 29, 1827 Lease of part of the lands of Carrickapolan for two lives from the first day of May 26, 1826 The lease is between Henry Brooke and Joseph Orr of Irvey in the Manor of Brookeborough , County Fermanagh, Ireland For and during the natural lives of Joseph Orr , his Heirs, Executors and Administrators and the lives of James Burnside aged about twelve the second son of James and Eliza Burnside of Corlough and James Burnside aged about 14 the second son of ( unfortunately the way it was copied it cut's off part of it right at beginning of the next side but following is how it looks to me ) ? as and Lydia Burnside of Corlough . Now remember I feel that those dates on the headstone for Thomas and Lilly have to be reversed as in no way would it be possible for Lilly Burnside wife of Thomas to be the mother of my GG grandmother Margaret Burnside Orr as the headstone states she is as there is no way a woman in her late sixties could have a daughter but clearly the headstone states THEIR DAUGHTER. And also remember that when Fleming Orr died on the bottom of the stone they had him as born or dying exactly one hundred years before he actually did so. So then they mortared it over and put the right data on the other side with his one small daughter and his wife. Lilly may have been nickname for Lydia , what do you think. Gail

Very seldom do I ask for it, But I need help and appreciate what I receive in return. I need an address for St Peters Clavier church in Baltimore, Maryland. I also need to know what graveyard they used. I have Campaigne's from county Cavan buried there who are related to the Flanagans of Fermanagh.
To add to the meaning of seneschal in it's use in Ireland. My family were seneschals for two estates in Ireland (Portglenone, Co Antrim and Carton, Co Kildare). What they did was much more than just be in charge of the estate. Some of their duties included, collecting of rents, overseeing tenant's disputes, ensuring the repairs and such of the estate. I think its funny that they went from being the biatach for the Maguire's in the early 1600's to seneschals and justice-of-the-peace in the late 1600's for the planter's. Kinda went with the times. Hope this helps. Phil
