    2. Marian Barton
    3. Hello List! and specifically David Armstrong who posted a message about Bartons in Kesh. I am researching Bartons but at this stage I am not sure whether it is Fermanagh or Tyrone. I am looking for the children of John and Diana Barton. They were said to have seven sons each of whom named his first son John and his first daughter Diana. I found one record for Edward born 1798 in Magheraculmoney, Fermanagh but so far have not found any others. Any help would be much appreciated. Marian Barton [email protected]

    3. I have an elderly contact near Irvinestown who married into the Armstrong family. Not far from Kesh. I think her late husband was Fred Armstrong . She has been extremely helpful with our Dundas research (her maiden name) and I am sure she could be helpful on Armstrong as well. You could try her at Lottie Armstrong, Drumbow, Irvinestown, Co Fermanagh. Doug Fletcher Canada

    2. Barber Bill-CARV22
    3. Verna, I have a book, "Descendants of William and John Dundass", with a photo in it of the TEEVAN House in Co. Fermanagh on p. 53 and a paragraph on p. 56. On p. 56 it says: "Teevan House This old house bears the date 1731 over the door and may have been built by Mr. William Dundass who was known to live there in 1770. It is located at Fawney, southeast of Lisnaskea, and was noted for its fourteen windows, both front and rear." I have no idea why the house was named after Teevans...but the Dundas families also went from Fermanagh to Canada. Bill Barber Hudson, New Hampshire -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Monday, March 12, 2001 12:31 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Reply to digest #47 Dear Fellow Listers I noticed that in Digest #47, a Mr. Teevan was mentioned in Bunahone. I am searching for my Teevan ancesters somewhere in Ireland. My James Teevan was born in 1835 and emmigrated to Canada in 1870 along with his wife Elizabeth (McKuen), son patrick and daughter Elizabeth. Griffiths Evaluation shows Teevan's in Cavan & Fermanagh. Death certificates and census records here in the U.S. does not mention the county in Ireland. My only living older relative says they came from Cork. I found on record of them in Cork. I firmly believe that is where they sailed from and since another son was born in 1872 in Canada, I believe that is where they landed. I would appreciate any help or guidance you could give me. I,m really hitting a brick wall now. It seems as if they really didn't exist. 3. Listers, I can get into the Irish Family Records but when I type in McClelland, I can't find any listings for what I think is County Fermanagh. 3. Hi Joy, I'm busy being confused here by Kinawley and my Tubmans! Looking through IGI and other places {Fermanagh Gold mainly} I find a few Tubmans (but there's a lot more across in the North of England). But I see them for the mid 1800s in Kinawley, Fermanagh and in Kinawley, Cavan. Are there really the two? and which are yours? Kinawley, Fermanagh is only a hop skip and a jump from Rossorry which is where the family is (I think!), but Cavan ?? Crawford.

    1. Re: Irish Surname Spelling
    2. Linda Hawkins
    3. Hello Allan. Sorry to sound flippant --- but the answer to your question about WHICH surname spelling to look for in Ireland is: ALL OF THEM, and more! For example, your McGINNIS etc. could also be McGUINNESS, Magennis, McEnnis, etc.; even Innes and Ennis. And when you see the Gaelic writing of Irish surnames, that is even more confusing -- especially if you are as ignorant as I am, and don't even know the basic rules of pronunciation for Gaelic. Because most of the people were illiterate, they only knew how to pronounce their names (just imagine the variety of accents etc. though); so whoever was writing the names down, just used whatever phonetic spelling rules they might have learned, and tried to listen as well as they could to the name that was said, and then wrote it down as best they could. Hence the variety of spellings. (I spent a few hours on Friday night at an Irish pub here in Sydney; and could NOT understand one word that any of the staff (all Irish) said to me -- what with their strong brogues (no I don't mean shoes), fast speech, and the loud background noises, I just had to guess and pretend that I understood -- so I could sympathise with anyone who might have tried to write down any names which they might have said). There are several books out about Irish family names which might help you. I suggest that you ask for them at your local library. Being called away ... must rush! good luck. ray hawkins in sydney, australia ----- Original Message ----- From: "Allan Griffith" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, March 18, 2001 1:38 PM Subject: Irish Surname Spelling > I'd like to ask this Irish researcg group about the more common or more > likely spelling for two names from Ireland - I have ancestors whose > names are spelled many different ways after they reached the U.S. - so > I'd like to know what is the most likely spelling to find them under in > Ireland. 3. Hi Crawford I don't know if you have yet visited Fermanagh Gold at http://www.fermanagh.org.uk but there are some TUBMANs in the 1788 Electors Poll. Francis, James, Robert & Thomas all from Drumkervin. There is also a Matthew Tubb Man from Mullay. There are also quite a few Crawfords and Wallaces to look through. To view these records you need to follow the links to become a Fermanagh Friend, then you have over 29,000 records you can search for free. 3. Hi Jan, Yes I've looked at your excellent site, and gotten quite a fair bit of info from it. [If you stir your memory, you might even remember helping me download some Crawford info. a few weeks back when we ran into an incompatibility of e-mail programs??] But I do have a couple of questions for you, if I may treat you as an expert witness! Trying to reconcile Gold info. and IGI info. I find Tubmans (maybe that should be Tubpersons today <grin>) in Kinawley. But both in Kinawley FGH and in Kinawley Cavan. Are there two Kinawleys, or was there a county boundary change, or might you guess someone misplaced one of the two? And second, where is Drumkervin?? I was fascinated to find the Tubman connection, as I'd seen no sign of any English planters (and I guess that's what they were) previously. Crawford.
