William was the eldest, born c1746. John was born 1 September 1752 in Chester Co., PA. James was born Nov 1758 in Chester Co. John and Martha can be found in Cumberland Co., PA on the 1762 tax roll of Middleton Township. John led the migration to South Carolina just before the Revolutionary War. He settled in the newly ceded Indian lands, known as the New Acquisition District. William came about the same time. James stayed in PA where he served in the Revolution. In 1783 James married Sarah Robinson, and they moved along with his parents South Carolina. He, too enlisted, along with John, in a unit from SC and served as a wagonmaster. The area the family settled is now in York Co., SC at Fergus Crossroads (The New Acquisition District.) All three brothers can be found in court records in service to the local government. Both John and William served in the South Carolina Assembly. John was elected to the lower house in 1782 unaware that he was a candidate- he served but one term. William was elected after the war, and served three terms between 1785-1790. Some family members state that James Fergus was also a politician, having served as a member of the US House of Representatives from Kentucky. John Fergus moved on to Rutherford Co., NC in 1783 where he married Ann, the widow of John Battle. John Fergus and family again moved to Wilkes Co., GA by 1786. John was a Justice of the Peace and owned a large plantation in Wilkes and Franklin Co. William followed from South Carolina to Wilkes Co., GA in 1794. William remained in Wilkes & Elbert Co., GA, where he raised his large family. William died on 3 April 1841. James Fergus, in his Revolutionary War pension application, stated that he left South Carolina in 1794 after both of his parents were dead. He moved to the outskirts of Lexington, KY and by 1800 was living in Cumberland Co., KY. He married twice more. In his twilight years, James lived in Carroll Co., TN where he died on 2 April 1839. John Fergus moved to Buncombe Co., NC by about 1800 and lived on Scott's Creek. He was a founding father of Haywood Co., NC and served as a Justice of the Peace. On 25 October 1829 he remarried to Mildred "Milly" Melton Welch, widow of David Alexander Welch (my line). He and Milly moved on to Monroe Co., TN by 1830. John died on 16 January 1837 and left a will in Blount Co., TN.
