Thanks to Shirley for her work of sending queries to all the e-mail addresses she finds on Internet search engines listing FERGUS - as some may be a business name, a first name, or an abbreviation for FERGUSON. In a "mailing" of almost 100 addresses she "found" one of our cousins! Mark D. FERGUS is an Electrical Engineering student at Ohio State University. He has his own website and I encourage each of you to visit and read about this remarkable young man who is a credit to the name FERGUS! Mark's lineage begins with Francis FERGUS>James FERGUS>John Shannon FERGUS>John Franklin FERGUS>Carl Franklin FERGUS>David John FERGUS>Mark D. FERGUS. Ring any bells? http://socrates.math.ohio_state.edu/~mfergus/ Please encourage Mark to join our FERGUS newsgroup! crussell@traversecity.com http://www.traverse.net/people/crussell/fergus_family.htm Listowner for DODD-L-request@rootsweb.com and FERGUS-L-request@rootsweb.com

You will reach Fergus information posted on Genforum with the following address: http://www.genforum.com/fergus/ And, something that took me a while to learn is that if a site will not open, or you want to go to the home page, begin at the end of URL and remove one segment at a time. If you would remove back to the genforum.com you would find the opening page and be able to search for other surnames, but if you only want FERGUS then bookmark it as above. A tidbit for the day;) Cynthia crussell@traversecity.com http://www.traverse.net/people/crussell/fergus_family.htm Listowner for DODD-L-request@rootsweb.com and FERGUS-L-request@rootsweb.com

Ah ha - as I decided to post for the roll-call I discovered that the short-cut I use to post would not show any of you how to send a post - I APOLOGIZE! I realize that for many of you I have cajoled you in to joining the FERGUS newsgroup and that you are new to genealogy. So, if you will simply copy the address in the To: spot exactly as it is, you will begin to post to the newsgroup. OK, give it try folks! See how new to this I am, just stumbling along also. Isn't it great to be human? Especially looking for link to Francis FERGUS, born Sept 8, 1752, Co Tyrone, emigrated 1770's to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania with 3-4 brothers, 1 remained, 2-3 returned to Ireland. Any connection with the time frame? Cynthia Russell crussell@traversecity.com http://www.traverse.net/people/crussell/fergus_family.htm Please visit the FERGUS Facts website and sign the guest book! Welcome to our new FERGUS newsgroup subscribers! We now boast a total of 21 subscribers . . . a great beginning for a small surname (quantity only). I invite each of you to again post your lineage for our new members and to encourage each to look again in case you have a possible cousin there. In genealogy newsgroups this is called a ROLL CALL. You would post your lineage as far back as you can go and go forward with it, listing dates and states, if known. Go for it! As an update I want you to know that several of us are VERY occupied gathering information and researching before we are able to post. Yesterday I found over 100 e-mail addresses with <FERGUS> as a part of the name or address. I forwarded these to one of our members, Shirley Fergus. She and her daughter drafted a letter to each e-mail address inviting them to join our newsgroup, visit our FERGUS websites and to share their lineage. I have found a cousin through these queries - not only do we share a common lineage, but Mark is a senior at Ohio State University majoring in Electrical Engineering. My grandfather, Guy Carleton Fergus, was a first cousin to his great-grandfather. Guy graduated from OSU almost a hundred years ago in E.E.! Yes, it is a small world. Also, I would like to ask that any of you who have websites please e-mail me personally to give me permission to link yours to my FERGUS FACTS website. I thank you! Update 10/3/98 The following is a distibution of FERGUS births by county, registered 1864 - 1882: Co Antrim - 4 listings Co Armagh - 8 " Co Down - 3 " Co Dublin - 1 " Co Fermanagh - 1 " Co Galway - 6 " Co Kerry - 1 " Co Mayo - 144 " Co Roscommon - 1 " Co Tyrone - 3 " Co Westmeath - 1 " Co Wexford - 1 " The following is a distribution of FERGIE births registered 1864 - 1882: Co Antrim - 1 " Co Down - 4 " The following is a distribution of FERGEY births registered 1864 - 1882: Co Antrim - 1 " The above information is taken from transcriptions from the copies I made at Oxford House, Belfast 3/98. The "Index to Births Registered in Ireland in (Year) list the Last Name, First Name, Registration District (usually the town or city), the Volume, and the Page Number. There is NO date listed, but from the volumes and page numbers one can figure out if it was an entry early or later in the year for the years 1871-1877. Beginning in 1878 the births were recorded by quarters and therefore require searching through 4 volumes of index per year, and also checking the end of the indexes for additions. I will continue to add additional information and additional years. Requests for additional information or listing of names must include the county. Although the majority of births occured in Co Mayo, it may be easier to track the families in the other counties as there are fewer to research. Since Rootsweb does not support sending tables or attachments I cannot post the information to the FERGUS newsgroup, but I would be happy to send what I have by individual request, by county, or for the whole list I have, just e-mail me directly. CENSUS RECORDS pertaining to Co Tyrone 1821: original returns detroyed in 1922 1831: little survives, none for Co Tyrone 1841: no part of the census has survived 1851: a few individual census returns remain for various parts of the province MIC/15A Census Substitute: OLD AGE PENSION CLAIMS These are abstracts of searches of the 1841 and 1851 census returns to prove the age of the claimant. T/550 1861, 1871, 1881, 1891: records were destroyed by order of the government during World War I. Nothing survives! 1901: Census taken of the whole island of Ireland on March 31, 1901 and records: name relationship to the head of the household religion literacy occupation age marital statue county of birth ability to speak English or Irish Those members of the family who were not present when the census was taken are NOT included. The persons included in this census were born during the reign of George III. The 1901 census returns are arranged by Poor Law Union, Districk Electoral Division, county, barony, parish, townland, and street if in a town or city. MIC/354 You will need to know the name of the county, townland and electoral division or ward. The "1901 Townland Index" was based on the census returns and includes the name of the towland or town, the county, barony, parish and District Electoral Division. It is important to establish the administrative divisions for the name you are researching. The information that I have on the surname I am searching, FERGUS yields: County - Tyrone Barony - Strabane Upper Barony Townland - Rylagh, Cappagh, Turquin, Main, Faccary Parish - Cappagh/Drumragh The references noted pertain to the calendars at PRONI which are color-coded according to the origins of the documents. Those referenced are T = calendars with transcripts of records and are color-coded red. The MIC = microfilm + number. This information is from "Tracing Your Ancestors in Northern Ireland"by Ian Maxwell. I highly recommend purchasing this book before researching at PRONI. Hello possible, probable, or potential cousins--I just subscribed and have searched the archives, but am coming up with a blank-- Anyone have any information on a James Fergus, father of William Fergus (born 8 June 1855) in St. Louis, Missouri to Ellen HALL (b. 23 Jan 1822, Manchester, England). Ellen came to America with her parents and other English Mormon converts on the Germanicus in 1854. They landed in New Orleans and took the riverboat Uncle Sam to St. Louis, where they wintered. Ellen showed up in Salt Lake City in the fall of '55 with William, and later claimed that William's father was named James FERGUS. We have no marriage record for James and Ellen and have no idea who this James FERGUS might be. Anyone from any other side of the family have any answers...? Thanks, Rob. The following surnames are considered to be a variation of the surname FERGUS: FERGUS Bermingham Ferguson Brimingham Gervis Burningham Ferris Carrier Kerrish McPherson McKorish McHarrissey Farquhar Paris McFarquhar Pearse Jahrus Carragher Farcian Herguson Feerick McCarraher McFerris Pearson Parson This list certainly seems peculiar to me in the many variations, and spellings. Some see too distant to be connected, but I found this list on a FHC (Latter Day Saints Family History Center) "Miscellaneous Surname" fiche. I would certainly like someone to help translate this for us . . . any volunteers? Beginning in 1878 the births were recorded by quarters and therefore require searching through 4 volumes of index per year, and also checking the end of the indexes for additions. I will continue to add additional years. It is a laborious project to access and copy the indexes in Belfast. The Registrar General's Office (GRO), Oxford House, is located two blocks from the Belfast City Hall, 49-55 Chichester Street, Belfast BT1 4HL, Northern Ireland, telephone 01232-252013, fax 01232-252044 is open Mon-Fri 9:30 a.m. - 4 p.m. They prefer an appointment. One must have identification and apply to do a general search. There are computerized indexes available from 1922 to the present. There are no general indexes for deaths and marriages before 1922 so it is necessary to know the district of registration. There is a 6 pound fee to search for up to 6 hrs; additional fees per page to copy; 6 pound fee for a full certified birth, death, or marriage certificate; 4 pound fee for a short birth certificate; staff search for each five year period is 2 pounds. The GRO Northern Ireland was opened in Belfast in 1922 following partition. Previously all records were kept at the GRO in Dublin, which was established in 1845. GRO NI houses vital records for the 6 counties of Northern Ireland for issue of certified copies to the public. These include birth, deaths, marrriages, still-births and adoptions. Birth, death, and Roman Catholic marriage registrations date from 1864 to the present; still-births from 1961 to the present; and adoptions from 1930 to the present. The following is a distibution chart of FERGUS births by county, registered 1871 - 1882: Co Antrim - 6 listings Co Armagh - 4 " Co Down - 7 " Co Fermanagh - 1 " Co Galway - 4 " Co Kerry - 1 " Co Mayo - 123 " Co Tyrone - 2 " Co Westmeath - 1 " Requests for additional information or listing of names must include the county. Although the majority of births occured in Co Mayo, it may be easier to track the families in the other counties as there are fewer to research. This is probably MORE than you ever wanted to know . . . but I think it will be valuable to chronicle the information that I have found, along with the source, and other general details. Eventually, this information will be added to the FERGUS Website listed below. In what is today called Northern Ireland, in Co Antrim is a city named Carrickfergus. There is also a castle, Carrickfergus or Carraig Fhearghais, there, by the same name. The derivations and meanings are as follows: carraig, carrig, carrick, carriga, an charraig = rock, a rocky land The ruler of the ancient kindom of Dalriada, Fergus Mor, a kinglet of the Dalriada brought Irish settlements in Scotland under his rule before he was drowned in a shipwreck off the coast c531. The town grew up in the shadow of the castle and shared its history. The place name applies to the rock on which the castle stands. "The powerful Norman John de Courcy chose the natural defense of a basalt promontory at Carrickfergus (the Rock of Fergus), to build his castle after 1180. King John came in 1210. Hugh de Lacy c1240 completed it. In 1315 it was captured after a year-long siege by Lord Edward Bruce from Scotland. The English recaptured it and held it for the next 300 years, withstanding many attacks by the local Irish and invading Scots troops. In 1688 the castle and the town were held for James II by Lord Iveagh but were captured in 1689 by Schomberg. On 14 June the following year William of Orange landed in Carrickfergus harbour on his way to the Battle of the Boyne. Owing to its strategic importance the town developed. Carickfergus Castle crows a rocky headland overlooking the lough. It is an unusally intact castle today. In Elizabethan times brick-lined gunports were inserted in the castle wall. The landing of William of Orange in 1690 is marked by a plaque at the harbour. Now the castle houses military museums." The castle was garrisoned until 1928, providing 800 years of active use. crussell@traversecity.com http://www.traverse.net/people/crussell/fergus_family.htm Listowner for DODD-L-request@rootsweb.com and FERGUS-L-request@rootsweb.com
