    2. Helen Tracy
    3. Hello to the list, My forebear was a James FERGUS, born 1801 in Westport, Co Mayo Ireland and died 1852 at Torcross, Devon in England. He was a coastguard and went to sea as a boy, according to his coastguard records - he was also 6 feet & 1/2 inch tall - tall for those days. His daughter, Mary, was born c1821 at Belmullet Co. Mayo, presumably when James was stationed there. James' wife was Catherine (surname not given). Mary Fergus married John BROWN, another Irish coastguard (born Castletownshend Co. Cork), in Southampton, Hampshire, England, in 1838 and one of their sons, John, was my g.father. I don't know if James & Catherine Fergus had any other children. I have no other details about this family unfortunately so if anyone comes across any additional info. for them I'd be pleased to hear. Regards, Helen in NSW Australia <http://www.lisp.com.au/~htracy>

    2. Cynthia N. Russell
    3. For those of you with roots to Francis FERGUS, b. 1752, Co Tyrone, Ireland one of our subscribers, Nancy Byrd, just sent a post to the group that lists 6 missing generations of FERGUS'. We had no record from her g-g-g grandparents on to the present. Nancy's g-g-g-g grandparents, Samuel and Catherine (Ditty) FERGUS migrated to Missouri where we ("FERGUS Family History" researchers) had no further information. Nancy has filled in an additional 6 generations! Incredible!! And, I'll bet she didn't even know that we didn't know this information! That's how genealogy works, so please keep posting! I'm so glad Nancy found us. Anyone else out there willing to post and make a connection? 3. I have just received a response to my "soapbox" post and have made two changes that hopefully will unconfuse you. First of all I have now changed the To:address to be that which you can type in or simply click reply-to. And, the second change is to my signature line below with the newgroup posting address rather than the subscribing address. All of the Rootsweb lists work the same and so if there is a list you wish to subscribe to you simply type in the name of the list followed by a hyphen, L for list, or D for Digest form, another hyphen followed by the word <request@rootsweb.com> and you will have the subscription address. If you wish to post to a group simply the name of the group-L@rootsweb.com (even those these last two addresses are highlighted they are not clickable. Hope this will begin to help. Anyone having trouble posting please contact me with as much information as possible so that I can either fix the problem or ask Rootsweb for help. Remember I am new at this also - so it is the blind leading the blind. 3. There are now 26 subscribers to this list but I am wondering if you are receiving the posts?????????? Today Shirle Fergus requested the FERGUS archives URL which I had posted a day or so ago - she had not received the 1st post. So I am wondering if others are experiencing the same problem???? No way for me to know unless each person will post to the list when you receive this message,OR you will e-mail me directly. Please if there is a problem we need to resolve it. And if not each person needs to jump in and begin posting their lineage . . . there is no need to have a FERGUS newsgroup for only one or two persons to post to. I am working long hours to research, which I choose to do, but I do not need to spend additional hours posting to a mute group - unless there is a reason for your silence. Please communicate if there is a reason for not sharing . . . I do realize that this is probably new for a lot of you, but hey, join in and participate. Begin anywhere - list your name, your father's name, and go backwards OR go forward from the furthest back, but POST something. Someone has to break the ice! (end of soapbox talk). 3. Go to this URL <http://newsearches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl> and follow the instructions there to find the archived (saved) posts. I doubled clicked on the above highlighted URL, typed in FERGUS to retrieve the FERGUS-L(List), and next typed in Francis FERGUS (the furthest back I can go in my lineage) and received the following information in 1 second: \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ <Query: Francis FERGUS Matching Record Count: 90 Total Retrieved: 50 Interpreted Query: Francis FERGUS Total Database Records: 128 Query Time: 1 seconds ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- Filename: 22 Match Number: 1 of 90 Score: 100 Headline Field [SUBJECT]: Listowner message Select: [Full] [FROM] [TO] [MESSAGE-ID] [SUBJECT] [MESSAGE-ODY][CONTENT-TYPE] \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ I would suggest that you add this URL to your "Favorites" or "Bookmark" list. There are 90 posts which have a match to "my" Francis FERGUS. Any new subscribers can quickly find out the information which has already been posted regarding their lineage. Now, the flip side of this is that if you have joined the list and NOT yet posted your lineage, no one will be able to access your information or make contact with you UNTIL you post. This is an invitation for all of the "lurkers" (an Internet term for those who observe, but don't post) to begin to send some information about your lineage to the FERGUS-L newsgroup! crussell@traversecity.com http://www.traverse.net/people/crussell/fergus_family.htm Listowner for FERGUS-L-request@rootsweb.com

    1. List of Surnames - FERGUS - all counties 1738-1924
    2. Cynthia N. Russell
    3. My last post gave background information on the "Index of Surnames", also called the "Householders' Index" in preparation for a FERGUS data base I just completed. However, in writing the background information, I am not certain of my source. . . I transcribed the information from records found at PRONI (Public Records Office of Northern Ireland). Ah, yes, ALWAYS make sure you have noted the source . . . I thought I had, but now I can see that my heading "All Counties - Surname" is NOT enough. I do learn as I go <BG> (BG = Big Grin). I am listing the work as "List of Surnames 1738-1924 for FERGUS" until I can cite the actual source. The earliest surname is 1738 and the latest 1924. The listing gives first name, date of birth, place, and county, plus a source number (film or microfiche #) to find the document. Additionally, some list the father's name, mother's name, spouse's name, and date of marriage. I have formatted a database which will be the original by county, and another to which I will add any FERGUS names I find in various records and sources to begin to connect families. . . a short of "melting pot". I am hoping that this will help to end some of the confusion connected with genealogy research . . . partially filled tablets, scraps of paper, information from other FERGUS websites or researchers. All of this explained I will move on to the FERGUS information. >From the "List of Surnames" I have transcribed a total of 67 FERGUS people with the following distribution: Co. Antrim - 14 Alice, Anne, Charles Armstrong, David, Elizabeth, George, John, Kathleen, Robert Co. Armagh - 1 Jane Co. Down - 1 Elizabeth Co. Dublin - 2 Charlotte, Margt. Co. Galway - 1 Owen Co. Mayo - 40 Andrew Bernard, Ann, Anne, Barbara, Bridget, Catherine,Celia, Ellen, Fanny, Farah, Faroh James, James, John, Joseph, Margaret, Maria, Martin, Mary, Michael Henry, Michl, Nanny, Owen, Patrick, Stephen, Thomas Co. Tyrone - 2 Francis, Nancy Co. Wexford - 2 Catherine Since our sponsor Rootsweb will not allow sending attachments, I am unable to post the database to the list. If there is ever any post of which you would like further information please e-mail me. You MUST post the surname FERGUS, first name, county in the subject line! for me to respond. At this time, I am unable to search my records for requests other than for the postings I send to the list. I am in preparation for my November research. Time is precious. Please be patient as I transcribe and organize. crussell@traversecity.com http://www.traverse.net/people/crussell/fergus_family.htm Listowner for DODD-L-request@rootsweb.com and FERGUS-L-request@rootsweb.com

    1. Administrative Divisions - Ireland
    2. Cynthia N. Russell
    3. As I prepare to return to Northern Ireland to research the FERGUS lineages, I am reminded of the Administrative Divisions that are important to know for research purposes. I must remember that first there are four PROVINCES: Ulster (mainly counties in Northern Ireland - Co. Antrim Co. Armagh, Co. Down, Co.Fermanagh,Co.Londonderry, and counties of the Republic - Co. Leitrim, Co. Cavan, and Co. Monaghan Connaught - Co. Mayo (the highest distribution of FERGUS people are here), Co. Sligo, Co. Roscommon, Co Galway Munster - Co. Clare, Co. Limerick, Co. Kerry, Co. Cork, Co. Tipperary, Co. Waterford Leinster - Co. Wexford, Co. Carlow, Co. Wicklow, Co. Laois, Co. Offaly, Co. Kildare, Co. Dublin, Co. Meath, Co. Westmeath, Co. Longford, Co. Louth --------------------------------------------------------- The COUNTY is the principal unit of local government. During the seventeenth century, the county was used as the leading administrative unit when framing the plantation of Ulster, and its importance was confirmed by the subsequent mapping of Ireland which established the county system. When researching genealogy, searching for a location, or addressing mail the county is the primary importance. --------------------------------------------------------- The BARONY is am important county subdivision. A barony can occupy part of two counties, inwhich case it is known as a half-barony in each. From the 16th to the 19th centuries, it was used in surveys, censuses, etc. The various valuations of Ireland carried out in the 19th century were organized and published by barony. Upon the reorganization of local government in 1898 the barony began to be excluded as an important territorial division. ------------------------------------------------------- There are approximately 62,000 townlands in Ireland, and great variations are evident in towland shapes and sizes because these are related to local topography and farming practices. Anything from five to thirty townlands may be grouped together to form a civil parish. From the 17th century onwards, land was let by landlords on a townland basis, and townland names were recorded in a variety of documents concerning land. The rentals of estates were organized according to townlands. The "Tithe Applotment" books used the townland as their smallest division, and the townland was also used as a distinct unit in the census and valuation books. ------------------------------------------------------ The Poor Law Act of 1838 introduced the Poor Law Union, which consisted of a number of townlands and centered on a market town. A workhouse was built in each market town and the system was financed by a rate collected under the Poor Law Valuation. \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ The PARISH is the last administrative division. The Church of Ireland and the Roman Catholic Church have each had separate parochial structures. \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ At this point in time, the only lead I have on my lineage beginning with Francis FERGUS, is information taken from the "Griffith's Valuation" for several FERGUS' I would look at these administrative divisions in Co Tyrone. Province: Ulster County: Tyrone Barony: Strabane Upper Barony Townland: Cappagh, Faccary, Maine, Rylagh,Turquin Poor Law Union: Omagh Parish: Cappagh, Drumragh Information from "Gracing Your Ancestors in Northern Ireland" by Ian Maxwell crussell@traversecity.com http://www.traverse.net/people/crussell/fergus_family.htm Listowner for DODD-L-request@rootsweb.com and FERGUS-L-request@rootsweb.com

    1. FERGUS-L Newsgroup Host
    2. Cynthia N. Russell
    3. Rootsweb is the host for our newsgroup. We are included in the count of 4,389 independent locality and surname mailing lists, many with searchable archives, such as ours. Go to this URL <http://newsearches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl> and follow the instructions there to find the archived (saved) posts. I doubled clicked on the above highlighted URL, typed in FERGUS to retrieve the FERGUS-L(List), and next typed in Francis FERGUS (the furthest back I can go in my lineage) and received the following information in 1 second: \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ <Query: Francis FERGUS Matching Record Count: 90 Total Retrieved: 50 Interpreted Query: Francis FERGUS Total Database Records: 128 Query Time: 1 seconds ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- Filename: 22 Match Number: 1 of 90 Score: 100 Headline Field [SUBJECT]: Listowner message Select: [Full] [FROM] [TO] [MESSAGE-ID] [SUBJECT] [MESSAGE-BODY] [CONTENT-TYPE] \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ I would suggest that you add this URL to your "Favorites" or "Bookmark" list. Personally, I want to discover all of the information and cousins I am able to and so I continue to post my "Francis FERGUS" information. As a matter of fact, this post will be archived because I have the name of my g-g-g-g grandfather in this message . . . already I have found cousins and made family contacts that have been "lost" over the years as the FERGUS' have migrated north, south, east, and west. Again, this is an INVITATION to post! crussell@traversecity.com http://www.traverse.net/people/crussell/fergus_family.htm Listowner for DODD-L-request@rootsweb.com and FERGUS-L-request@rootsweb.com
