Hello FERGUS list of 33 subscribers! Please read through this information which was posted by Dick Eastman in his newsletter and consider if you would purchase this and do lookups for this list? Already someone has volunteer for a different CD and lookup - so watch for the news to the list. If this interests you why not share in researching the FERGUS folk and any branch lines with the help of Everton's - an important genealogical publisher. Cynthia - Everton's Roots Cellar 1640-1990 on CD-ROM Everton Publishers has been producing genealogy books and magazines for more than fifty years. They are best known for Everton's Genealogical Helper, a bimonthly magazine with more than 50,000 subscribers. Every edition of the magazine includes genealogical queries, letters to the magazine asking, "Who were the parents of ..." and similar queries. In later years these were referred to as Everton's Computerized "Roots" Cellar. Everton's has now created a CD-ROM disk with all the queries from the Computerized Roots Cellar. Everton's Roots Cellar 1640-1990 is an alphabetical listing of more than 200,000 individuals who were the subjects of queries. I had a chance to use the Roots Cellar CD-ROM last week. The CD-ROM itself is a joint effort between Everton's and Broderbund, makers of Family Tree Maker. The front label on the CD-ROM jewel case credits Everton's, but the label on the back of the case clearly identifies it as produced by Broderbund. The same back label says that the CD-ROM disk requires Family Tree Maker (for Windows or for Macintosh) or Family Archive Viewer for Windows. Version 3.02 or later of any those programs can be used. I used Family Tree Maker version 5.0 for Windows. Quoting from the introduction to the CD-ROM: Everton's Computerized "Roots" Cellar is an electronic database of family history queries. The purpose of a query is to find information on ancestors by making contact with other researchers seeking information on the same family line. This Family Archive includes information taken from queries originally collected by Everton Publishers and published in "Everton's Genealogical Helper Magazine." The name of the individual who was the subject of a query is indexed on this Family Archive. From this Family Archive, you can learn about an event in each listed individual's life. Information includes the individual's full name as well as an event type (such as birth or death), date of that event, and location of the event. You can also learn the name and address of the person who contributed the original query to Everton Publishers. With this information, you can contact the contributor and obtain or exchange even more detailed family history information. Each record in the database includes: 1. Name -- the individual's given name and surname, as well as any titles that were included in the original index. 2. Event -- the type of event referenced in the family history query. If an event is marked "Unknown," Everton Publishers did not provide information about the specific family history event to Broderbund. However, in such cases, it is safe to assume that the individual resided in the location noted during the year noted. 3. Date -- the year in which the event occurred. 4. Locality -- the city or county in which the event took place. 5. State/Country -- state or country in which the event took place. The CD-ROM is very easy to use. First I launched Family Tree Maker; next I selected VIEW and then selected FAMILYFINDER. After a copyright screen, the data appeared in the form of a book with tabs down the right side, labeled Introduction, Contents and Records. After reading the Introduction, I jumped directly into Records. All 300,000 records are listed alphabetically on one screen. However, you can type in a surname followed by an optional first name and the display jumps to that listing almost immediately. If that exact listing is not in the database, the closest listing is displayed. I searched for my own surname and found quite a few entries. Here is a typical record showing the information available: Eastman, Enoch Event : Died Year : 1829 Locality : Bennington State/Country : Vermont Submitter : Mary Jo A. Robertson Street 1 : 32 Westbury St. City : Thousand Oaks State / Country : CA Zip : 91360 In this case, Mary Jo A. Robertson is looking for more information about Enoch Eastman, who died in Bennington, Vermont in 1829. Ms. Robertson's address is provided so that you may contact her directly. This database is very simple but also very effective at finding others who are researching the same lines that you are. You can copy a record from the CD-ROM to the Windows Clipboard and then insert it into another program, such as a word processor. That's how I copied the above entry. This capability can also be used when writing letters to the submitter. You can copy just one record, or you can click on any number of individual records to "select" them and then copy all of the selected records at once. You can also print them to paper in the same manner. The Everton's Roots Cellar CD-ROM software also has the capability of copying the data directly to a Family Tree Maker database. I wouldn't recommend copying the data to your main database without verifying the integrity of the data. However, you might want to keep a separate database of "information that I am looking for." If so, copying the record to that secondary database can be very useful. Everton's Roots Cellar 1640-1990 is available from Everton's, from Broderbund, and from many of their dealers. It is Everton CD#18 and sells for $19.95 U.S. funds. For more information, look at: http://www.everton.com or http://www.familytreemaker.com/018facd.html

He now resides in Ashland, Ore. From 1860 until 1866, they resided in Iowa, and at the latter date moved to Jasper County, Mo. Their son, James W., was reared and received his education, first attending the common schools, and then the high-school at Peirce City, Mo. He received his [p.835] medical education in the Joplin Medical College, at Joplin, Mo., graduating from that institution as an M. D. in March, 1883. He first began practicing at Bloomington, Benton Co., Ark., and in 1879 removed to Elm Springs, and the same year located in Robinson, Ark., where he has since resided. He has a large and increasing practice, and consequently is doing well financially. In the latter part of 1878 he was married to Elmira Smith, born in Newton County, Mo., in 1854, a daughter of Howell Smith, a prominent Methodist minister, born in Tennessee, and their union was blessed in the birth of five children: Elbert, James, Franklin, Carrie and William. The church house "was erected in 1854 or 1855 on land obtained from Elias Lyon. He and his wife Nancy McVicker were charter members of this church." The building has been removed from its original site and only the foundation stones and cement steps give evidence of the once thriving church. Elias Lyon is said to have killed the last deer in Jefferson Township. Michael Pugh came to Jefferson Township in 1834 and located in Sect. 13, he made a gift of three acres for this cemetery. He was a member of the Methodist Protestant church but his wife Elizabeth Caudy Pugh was a charter member of the Shiloh Methodist Episcopal Church. This cemetery is two and a half miles south of Upland and a half mile east. It is a beautiful, well kept place and is in present day use. The earliest date is on that of Mary S. Hello to All who have subscribed to the FERGUS list. First we want to let you know that this list is for people who are new to genealogy and for the die-hard genealogists alike. Please post to the board even if you are not sure what to do with the information you have on your line. Some people just list all the names and dates of people in their lines. Others simply ask questions on how to do something about their lines or maybe where to find help in finding information. You never know you might just make a heritage connection. I can tell you from experience that there is nothing like the feeling of finding a new relative. It is very exciting, but the only way you can do this is by sending the list what you know of your heritage...even if it is only information on your mother and father. So far from this list we have made three connections to our lineage. Your family may not be related to mine but there are others who you just may be related to, why take the chance of never knowing. You may just want to write in, in a format like this: David Albert or Alexander FERGUS b. 5-19-1850 Ohio d. 1918 Penn? m. Mary M. POWELL 12-31-1871 Maysville KY ? children: Mary Ellen James Albert Maggie Joe James Albert FERGUS first wife unknown 2nd wife Kate Olivia DAY 3rd wife Grace CHAFFEE children: Dorothy Mary Nina Helen Howard Eugene James Russell Marion Howard Eugene b. 9-18-1904 d. 5-4-1984 m. I thought I would post this in hopes that someone from this newsgroup would be willing to purchase this and do lookups for this group of 30 + - Wish list for the FERGUS-L newsgroup: The British Vital Records Index on CDs, recently released by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, contains nearly five million names and some of the records date back to 1538. These new CDs contain individuals' names from parish registers, civil registration and other record collections in England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland. There are five CDs in the British Vital Records Index -- four of which are birth and christening records and the other is marriage records. The amount of accessible data varies greatly from parish to parish. This set of vital records is part of an ongoing project which will be updated periodically, according to the public affairs department of the church. "These new CDs may save families hundreds of hours of time and painstaking research," said Elder D. Todd Christofferson, executive director of the church's Family History Department. In a recent press release, Christofferson notes that the church is aggressively working toward developing other products that will simplify genealogical research, making it faster and easier to access needed information and trace family histories. "Nearly half of American families can trace part of their lineage to the British Isles," Christofferson said. "Our repository of records is the most comprehensive source available to help these families trace their roots, not just to ancestors who arrived in America, but to their forebears in 16th-century England." The British Isles Vital Records Index contains the highest number of records (100+ per county where records were collected) from the English localities of Sussex, Kent, Herefordshire, Lincolnshire and Derbyshire. Next in representation (50+) are: Yorkshire, Lancashire, Nottinghamshire, Hertfordshire, Wiltshire and Dorest; followed by (25+) for Hampshire, Gloucestershire, Staffordshire and Northunberland. Keep in mind that not all vital records for any particular locality are included. This giant index was put together from the work of thousands of volunteers who examined microfilmed records and extracted information such as names, dates, places and family relationships. The set includes the Family History Resource File Viewer, which takes about five minutes to install. You can search by surname or surname and given name. Additionally, searches can be modified to specific time periods of a five-year range and to certain localities. Moreover, you can further limit your search by including names of father, mother and/or spouse. Unless you check the box to search for an exact spelling, searches will provide you variant spellings -- a most helpful feature. After searching for a particular individual or for, say, all of the Peacocks (one of my English lines) in a particular locality, you can print out the data or save it in RTF (rich text format) or GEDCOM (PAF 3.0 format). A search provides the Family History Library's film number where the information was found along with where it was recorded, such as "Saint Michaels, Bishops Stortford, Hertford, England." System requirements: Pentium processor, Windows 95 or Windows NT 4.0+, 8 MB RAM minimum, 16 MB recommended, CD-ROM drive (4X minimum recommended), VGA monitor with 256-color-capable video card and 25 MB hard disk space. The British Vital Records Index (1538-1888), item #50028 on five CDs is available for $15, plus small shipping fee -- credit cards are accepted.
