    3. Hello FERGUS people! I have worked on FERGUS genealogy all day today - answering posts, organizing our subscribers list, and reading the poll figures. Everyone seems to favor having the highlighted addresses below. Please also note, that I have decided to add the Archives URL for ease of access. Once there you will have to enter FERGUS in the search window. I read through all 192 posts in the archives today to begin to make some sense of the FERGUS ancestry, all of the different lineages. I would like to ask that as you post to the newsgroup that in the subject line you list the surname, first name, state or country, and perhaps the time period or a date. This will definitely be an asset to those wishing to search the archives. There is already quite a bit of information posted - do take a search! This is most interesting work and I do enjoy corresponding with so many different people. We have a diverse group subscribed with many backgrounds from many countries. And, I am trying to keep them all straight in addition to moving forward with my own direct ancestry. I do know that each of you would be making more genealogy connections if you would post your information, and then re-post the information a few weeks down the road for new subscribers to read and others to perhaps be in a different place in their research. I am asking for a roll-call of all subscribers please. Use any format you wish, but post back farthest for your FERGUS ancestry - or a collateral line of DITTY, etc. Thank you for reading, Cynthia crussell@traversecity.com FERGUS Website http://www.traverse.net/people/crussell/fergus_family.htm FERGUS Newsgroup FERGUS-L@rootsweb.com Rootsweb Archives: http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl

    1. FERGUS, Samuel Co Armagh > New Zealand Fergus
    2. Cynthia N. Russell
    3. Hello Grace and Doug, There are few FERGUS people to trace in Ireland! But, I do have a Samuel FERGUS, Co Armagh, Drumcree Tavanagh, listed for the town of Portadown, Bridge Street (address) listed in the Griffith's Valuation ANd also listed is David FERGUS, Co Armagh, Crumcree, Corcrain, Town of Portadown, Bridge Street. The Girrifth's Valuation is dated 1848-1864. It was begun in the south of Ireland and progressed to the north, so that Co Armagh was probably listed in the 1860's. There is a Samuel FERGUS listed in the Griffith's Valuation from Co Tyrone - that would be about 45 miles away from Co Armagh. The previous listing I think would be more likely. Thank you for posting - now I will be better equipped to answer you if I run across anything more! 3. Hello Everyone, I have been watching the Fergus pages with interest, so far nothing has tied in so here are some more to think about. We have a William FERGUS born C1836 in County Armagh, Ireland. He married Amelia Muirhead or Moorhead in Portadown, County Armagh in 1858. In 1864 he arrived on the "Golden City" in Auckland NZ. His father was Samuel or Emanuel FERGUS probably from County Armagh and was a Hotel Keeper. Does this sound familiar to anyone? He was probably born early 1800's. Our William was a Tailor. We have also found a David Fergus in the same time frame in Auckland who was also a tailor, we don't know where he belongs or if he is William's brother. I hope this can help some-one, or us maybe! 3. Well, here's my FERGUS line as far back as it goes-- 6--Robby Scott FERGUS born: 9 September 1968, Corvallis, Oregon, USA married: 20 August 1992, Susan Denise PETERSEN 5--Gary Leon FERGUS born: 6 January 1945, Hillsboro, Oregon, USA married: 1 April 1967, Marilyn McNEAL 4--William Boyd FERGUS born: 20 March 1911, Garland, Utah, USA married: 27 June 1935, Cleone CUTLER 3--William Maughan FERGUS born: 19 November 1879, Logan, Utah, USA married: 11 April 1910, Martha Elizabeth PETERSON 2--William FERGUS born: 8 June 1855, St. Louis, Missouri, USA married: 19 December 1876, Martha Weston MAUGHAN 1--James FERGUS born? married: about 1854? Ellen (HALL) BARDSLEY Here's where we get stuck. Ellen HALL was from Manchester, England (born: 23 January 1822). She was married (8 October 1848) to William Bardsley (who later died?). Anyway, on 4 April 1854 she sailed for America with a company of Mormon converts including her mother, Sarah, and her step-father (William Walker McNaughton). They sailed on the ship Germanicus--passage was 69 days with water stops on St. George's on the Grand Caicos, and on the Dry Tortugas. The ship arrived in New Orleans 12 June 1854. On 13 June 1854 the LDS company started up the Mississippi River for St. Louis on the large sidewheeler Uncle Sam. When they arrived in St. Louis, Ellen remained with part of the company for the winter. On 8 June 1855 Ellen gives birth to William FERGUS. We know nothing about his father except he was supposedly named James FERGUS. When Ellen HALL arrived in Salt Lake City, she was supposedly a widow, and was married to Brigham Young's shoemaker--Thomas DAVIDSON. So who was this James FERGUS? We haven't been able to find any marriage records around St. Louis, including in any LDS Church branch records. All we really know for sure is that Ellen HALL knew SOMEBODY about September 1854--and she said his name was James FERGUS. Any cousins out there with more info...? 1. FERGUS, John Co Antrim before 1756>Chester Co, PA by 1756
    2. Cynthia N. Russell
    3. I am looking through the FERGUS-L archives posts to compile information to search in Ireland and would like to amend some of the following information: Carrickfergus is one word which describes a city in Co Antrim (which would be the county where John FERGUS would be listed in any records). To my knowledge there was no king named Carrickfergus as carrick=rock. From "The Ordnance Survey Leisure Guide - Ireland". The powerful Norman John de Courcy chose the natural defence of a basalt promontory at Carrickfergus (the Rock of Fergus), to build his castle after 1180 and owing to its strategic importance the town developed." If anyone has researched before this time would you please post the information as I am still working on the 18th century. "James Fergus, son of John and Martha Fergus, was born in November 1756 in Chester County, Pennsylvania. His parents came to America from North Ireland, not far from Belfast, and near Carrick Fergus Castle. We do not know the year of their arrival in America. James Fergus claimed to be a direct descendant of King Carrick Fergus of Scotland... 3. A couple of posts to this list have named three brothers of my Fergus ancestors from the Revolutionary War era, namely John Fergus, wagonmaster, of Monroe Co., TN, James Fergus (m1. Sarah Robinson) who died in Carroll Co., TN, and William Fergus of the SC Legislature from the New Acquisition District (York Co): JAMES FERGUS CARROLL COUNTY PRIVATE - SERGEANT PENNSYLVANIA LINE $50.50 ANNUAL ALLOWANCE $151.50 AMOUNT RECEIVED AUGUST 14, 1833 PENSION STARTED AGE 77 *********************************************** JOHN FERGUS MONROE COUNTY PRIVATE INFANTRY AND CAVALRY $44.16 ANNUAL ALLOWANCE $132.48 AMOUNT RECEIVED JANUARY 14, 1834 PENSION STARTED AGE 82 ************************ District called the New Acquisition.-- Ayes: none.-- Nays: Andrew Love, James Powell, William Fergus , William Bratton, Robert Patton, James Ramsay, John Drennan, James Martin, Joseph Palmer, Alexander Moore. ************************ James, John and William were sons of John and Martha Fergus. William was the eldest, born c1746. John was born 1 September 1752 in Chester Co., PA. James was born Nov 1758 in Chester Co. John and Martha can be found in Cumberland Co., PA on the 1762 tax roll of Middleton Township. John led the migration to South Carolina just before the Revolutionary War. He settled in the newly ceded Indian lands, known as the New Acquisition District. William came about the same time. James stayed in PA where he served in the Revolution. In 1783 James married Sarah Robinson, and they moved along with his parents South Carolina. He, too enlisted, along with John, in a unit from SC and served as a wagonmaster. The area the family settled is now in York Co., SC at Fergus Crossroads (The New Acquisition District.) All three brothers can be found in court records in service to the local government. Both John and William served in the South Carolina Assembly. John was elected to the lower house in 1782 unaware that he was a candidate- he served but one term. William was elected after the war, and served three terms between 1785-1790. Some family members state that James Fergus was also a politician, having served as a member of the US House of Representatives from Kentucky. John Fergus moved on to Rutherford Co., NC in 1783 where he married Ann, the widow of John Battle. John Fergus and family again moved to Wilkes Co., GA by 1786. John was a Justice of the Peace and owned a large plantation in Wilkes and Franklin Co. William followed from South Carolina to Wilkes Co., GA in 1794. William remained in Wilkes & Elbert Co., GA, where he raised his large family. William died on 3 April 1841. James Fergus, in his Revolutionary War pension application, stated that he left South Carolina in 1794 after both of his parents were dead. He moved to the outskirts of Lexington, KY and by 1800 was living in Cumberland Co., KY. He married twice more. In his twilight years, James lived in Carroll Co., TN where he died on 2 April 1839. John Fergus moved to Buncombe Co., NC by about 1800 and lived on Scott's Creek. He was a founding father of Haywood Co., NC and served as a Justice of the Peace. On 25 October 1829 he remarried to Mildred "Milly" Melton Welch, widow of David Alexander Welch (my line). He and Milly moved on to Monroe Co., TN by 1830. John died on 16 January 1837 and left a will in Blount Co., TN.

    3. Hello This came from another list that I sub to A sexton record is what would be called a 'work sheet' by the cemetery. It contains (other than the grave number and location) all information available about the individual. It contains name(s) of people who paid for the lot, the doctors, funeral home, etc. Sometimes the caretakers don't like to take the time to give this information out, but it is public records at the office of the cemetery. : Contact the cemetery and obtain a Sexton record. These sometimes : contain more info than the official death certificate. I know that in : Missouri the Sexton record does contain the parents info. 3. I am reposting the FERGUS Archives correct URL and I do apologize for any disappointment or frustration that may have occured earlier due to an incorrect posting from rootsweb itself. I am trying to remember to check all URL's that I send to the group BEFORE posting to make sure they do indeed work. . . sometimes I work too quickly in answering and posting. The following URL will take you directly to the archives that have been filed, double click on the highlight URL for access: http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl After arriving at the search site you will need to type in FERGUS and then it will narrow your search more specifically with the name of your ancestor, or a range of dates, or a place, etc. and all of the listings will be brought up for you to access. Happy Hunting!

    2. Cynthia N. Russell
    3. This information was forwarded to me by Shirley FERGUS: Grant County, Indiana Shiloh Cemetery, SHILOH Shiloh Cemetery lies across the road from the site of the Methodist Episcopal Church of that same name. The church house "was erected in 1854 or 1855 on land obtained from Elias Lyon. He and his wife Nancy McVicker were charter members of this church." The building has been removed from its original site and only the foundation stones and cement steps give evidence of the once thriving church. Elias Lyon is said to have killed the last deer in Jefferson Township. Michael Pugh came to Jefferson Township in 1834 and located in Sect. 13, he made a gift of three acres for this cemetery. He was a member of the Methodist Protestant church but his wife Elizabeth Caudy Pugh was a charter member of the Shiloh Methodist Episcopal Church. This cemetery is two and a half miles south of Upland and a half mile east. It is a beautiful, well kept place and is in present day use. The earliest date is on that of Mary S. McHenry age 17-Feb. 15, 1841. The above was written by the DAR in the 1940's. Fergus, Ada E. dau of E. & L. Fergus died Aug. 27, 1877 aged 6m.16d. Edwin died Apr. 5, 1894 aged 58y.2m.4d.
