The LDS Church maintains Family History Centers are almost all of their churches. If you have never visited one of the FHC I would recommend that you go take a look. Do call first as there are usually restricted hours as the libraries are staffed by volunteers - both members of the LDS Church and volunteers within the community who are knowledgeable about genealogy research. There are various resource materials at each library. The one here in Traverse City, Michigan has information in particular on Michigan and the surrounding counties on "permanent loan". In addition to this information there are D.A.R. Indexes and a variety of other indexes. There are computers with a huge database of information. Many FERGUS listings are posted on various CD's and microfiche. And, there are listings of microfilms available for rental ($3.50 for ea. - for a 4 wk. period of use) - all U.S. census records, deeds, marriage records, etc. and listings of microfilms available for other countries. Before my first trip there (just last January) I was hesitant to walk in to an unfamiliar place doing an unfamiliar task - but once inside the door I was met by friendly volunteers who even instructed me on how to use their computers, CD's and microfilms. Now, I stay until the light are turned off and I walk out with the last volunteer. I recommend taking a visit - and if you do, please post back to the list on your experience, and your FERGUS findings! Hello again newsgroup! If this doesn't interest you please just use your delete button, but this posting will give you an idea of the incredible work that the people at Rootsweb do to keep our list(s) clear of SPAM . . . a rather giant job as you will read! Many of you may not be familiar with Rootsweb, so I will post information from time to time for you to understand that it is financial sponsorship of Rootsweb that allows me to have this list that helps support this HUGE genealogy server. Read on if you wish. Cynthia SPAM ATTACK. On 10/26/98, Dr. Brian Leverich wrote: Tim Pierce and a Spammer and I Attack the Web Server. Just a bit ago I checked out the main Web server and found it operating at load factor 26, which is way high for peak hours and extremely weird for this time of the evening. Turns out that Tim Pierce and a spammer and I were cooperating to attack the server. Here's what happened. The spammer flashflooded our 4,000 mailing lists with massively cross-posted garbage. Because it was massively cross-posted and because Tim's filters prevented it from going out to the lists, the posts all made it onto the listservers without the load climbing on the listservers enough to slow the flow. Because Tim CCs all the "Spam Detective" catches to himself on the Web server (that's where he reads his mail), the listservers cheerfully tried to force 4,000 pieces of spam onto the Web server simultaneously with 4,000 SMTP connections. Ordinarily this wouldn't be a problem, because the sendmail on the Web server would have started choking off incoming as the load factor skyrocketed. But I had the load choke-off set *very* high because, before I upgraded the server in June, I'd had to do that so rootsweb-help would keep working. So the Web server just sat there and got pounded. I've rationalized the sendmail settings now so the Spam Detective can no longer dangerously mailbomb the Web server. RootsWeb continues to improve our facilities for surviving spam attacks and preventing spam from reaching our mailing lists. On Monday of this week, RootsWeb brought a new mailhub server online. The new mailhub server, which is one of RootsWeb's fastest and most expensive servers to date, has the speed and capacity to support the more sophisticated spam filters that we will be implementing in the future. * * * SPAM ATTACK UPDATE: On 10/28/98, a RootsWeb listmember wrote to Tim Pierce, RootsWeb's senior system administrator: "I got over 27 (blocked spam from your list) messages today, WOW! I hope someone crams a high voltage lead up this guy's computer. Good job for the Spam Detective!" Tim responded, in part: This morning, we received more than 5,000 spams (and counting) from these turkeys in a little more than an hour and a half [by mid-afternoon, the count had risen to 9,000]. I think that sets some new kind of record for us. The load on our systems is skyrocketing just trying to keep the junk off the lists, and our network pipes are clogged with the extra traffic.
Well, thank goodness I have a good sense of humor, especialy when it comes to my short-comings. My, my, when writing e-mail queries or posts I rarely re-read my writing and hence this former English teacher write "numberous" for the correct word "numerous". So, please no posts with corrections, but just smile, or perhaps giggle as I did when I received the post and read it then! Hello FERGUS people! I received the same spam message all of you did today. I want you to know that everyday I receive numberous posts that are spam trying to intercept our list. But, our server Rootsweb works diligently to weed out almost all - this is the 1st spam that has gotten through to this list! Pretty amazing, eh? All of the other messages that Rootsweb suspects are spam are sent to the listowner - then I look and get to decide if it is or not . . . in case someone has posted a message that is truly meant for our group but appears to have a spam-looking subject line. I am taking the time for everyone to read this information as I think that Rootsweb is to be commended for their stamina at protecting all of the hundreds of lists that they maintain. And, to explain the procedure, no one on this list needs to do anything, no message to me, or to Rootsweb as I receive all of the same posts you do, plus some for maintaining the list. I have already forwarded the post to Tim Pierce, the SPAM-man at Rootsweb and in a matter of minutes this particular address will be blocked from ALL of the lists. This is one aspect of my job as listowner that makes it so nice, there is a lot of support to keep a list running smoothly. So continue to post your roll-call as soon as you can. Hi George, What a wonderful post you made to the FERGUS newsgroup - thank you. I extracted the above and will see if I can find any listing in my research papers and when I return again to Northern Ireland in January. I know that the Griffith's Valuation is about 100 yrs. later but I thought you might be interested to know that there are 3 FERGUS listings for Co Antrim in case they might relate back to your John. They are: FERGUS, Charles Co Antrim, Shankill, Smithfield Townparks Sackville Place FERGUS, Jane Co Antrim, Carrickfergus Middle Division FERGUS, James Co Antrim Cranfield, Cranfield Of course, you are aware that there is LITTLE to nothing available in information for 1750's - that is the time frame I am searching for "my" Francis FERGUS, born 1752 in Co Tyrone. I've made up an index card and will reference it while researching in Belfast. Any other requests you might have? Hello to All who have subscribed to the FERGUS list. First we want to let you know that this list is for people who are new to genealogy and for the die-hard genealogists alike. Please post to the board even if you are not sure what to do with the information you have on your line. Some people just list all the names and dates of people in their lines. Others simply ask questions on how to do something about their lines or maybe where to find help in finding information. You never know you might just make a heritage connection. I can tell you from experience that there is nothing like the feeling of finding a new relative. It is very exciting, but the only way you can do this is by sending the list what you know of your heritage...even if it is only information on your mother and father. So far from this list we have made three connections to our lineage. Your family may not be related to mine but there are others who you just may be related to, why take the chance of never knowing. You may just want to write in, in a format like this: David Albert or Alexander FERGUS b. 5-19-1850 Ohio d. 1918 Penn? m. Mary M. POWELL 12-31-1871 Maysville KY ? children: Mary Ellen James Albert Maggie Joe James Albert FERGUS first wife unknown 2nd wife Kate Olivia DAY 3rd wife Grace CHAFFEE children: Dorothy Mary Nina Helen Howard Eugene James Russell Marion Howard Eugene b. 9-18-1904 d. 5-4-1984 m. Margaret Mary DOUGHERTY 8-24-1931 children: Bernard James Howard Joseph Bernard James FERGUS b. 4-17-1943 m: Shirley ORGEL b.3-3-1951 and so-on......Information on families can lead you anywhere and to anyone or anything. Make this a full-time or part-time hobby...You may just find it gets interesting somewhere down the line!!!! Thanks, Shirley Fergus, bernardf@intrstar.net http://members.aol.com/bandsferg/genealogy/fergus/bfergus.htm
I am sending this post on from turnier@bellsouth.net a subscriber to this list. To post to the list please use the address in the To: or click on the hyperlink at the bottom of the posts from me. Our Fergus family comes, very likely from Louisburg. They were stone mason who helped build the church of Knock in county Mayo.We know that the first Fergus in the town of Ballyhaunis, a few miles from Knock, was William Fergus. He was married to a woman by the name of Mcdonald. (This happened a few years before the Great Famine) He built three houses across the railroad track, which still stand. His sons were: William (unmarreid no children), John who married Mary Morley and James who emigrated and settled in Long Island, New York. He had two sons: Austin and James. Our branch of the family descends from John. His daughter Annie Fergus(Ballyhaunis) married Thomas Fitzgerald (Knock). Annie and Thomas lived in Pittsburg but shortly after their marriage settled in Fairview, NJ and later at Ridgefield, NJ. They had Joseph, Edward, Marie, Anne, Irene and Mildred. Achild by the name of Thomas died in infancy. Our brannch descends from Irene, who married William A. Turnier and had three children: William John b.1939 Jersey City, NJ W.P. Magnum Professor of law at the University of North Caroliona m. 1966 Maria Fernanda Vallecillo Three children: Anne Marie b. NYC 1969, m. G.
