Calling all researchers, or want-to-be researchers. I need some help today, Sunday. One of the websites where I would like to post our FERGUS information requires that we list the variations of the surname. Would any interested persons please post these to the FERGUS newsgroup? I need to spend today answering 110 e-mails waiting for me from some of you and from new FERGUS queries. This would be an immense help. I know that there are some listings on the linked URL's on my website for the FERGUSon clan, etc. But, all are welcome. And, I think it would be rather fun for all to read them on the list - then I need to have someone alphabetize the gathered names, and do a final posting which I will then use. What a help that would be. Hi Everyone, I have received the Vital Records Index for the British Isles CD's. These contain 5 million biths, christenings and marriages taken from a partial collection of records in the British Isles from 1538 to 1888. This was put out by the Family History Library. Anyone who would like a look up just let me know. Jill Fergus McGirr JMcgirr43@aol.com

For those of you who are Orvis fans I would call your attention to their Fall 1998 "The Sporting Tradition" catalog. If you wish to receive a copy just call their number, (800) 548-9548 and ask for a copy. I am calling this to your attention because my 1st cousin, Jim FERGUS is featured on page six. Jim is a sportsman and an excellent writer. He has authored many articles as a correspondent of "Outside" magazine, a contributing editor of "Sports Afield", a writer of "A Hunter's Road: A Journey with Gun and Dog across the American Uplands" and a novelist of "One Thousand White Women". In the spring a collection of his sporting essays and stories, "The Sporting Road" will be published. His books are featured in the catalogue. Not only is Jim a writer with insight and sensitivity he is also a gracious, kind man who is using his God-given talents. crussell@traversecity.com FERGUS Website http://www.traverse.net/people/crussell/fergus_family.htm FERGUS Newsgroup FERGUS-L@rootsweb.com Rootsweb Archives: http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl

Good Day, I have found a wonderful site to search for land patents! The Land Patents at the Bureau of Land Management, Eastern States GLO are now available for searching or downloading. There is a table section for viewing and ALSO you can look at the actual patent with the actual signature of ancestors - and then print it out if you wish! The home page is http://www.glorecords.blm.gov There are FERGUS and DITTY listings, and next I will search for PATTON. Do take a visit! Once you find your ancestor, you can print the land transfer certificate. If the certificate was for a homestead, you can send an email to the National Archives at inquire@arch2.nara.gov and ask for some Form 84's. It takes about 6 weeks after you pay to get the files. Only homesteads have these files available. Information could include a copy of the paper showing the patent issue date, a copy of the filing receipt, a copy of the affidavit showing that notice of filing was posted in the newspaper, a copy of the notice of filing, two affidavits from neighbors showing that the conditions had been met, an affidavit from the homesteader, and if he is not native born a copy of his declaration of intent and his naturalization certificate. If he used his military benefits to get a homestead there may be a paper on his military service. Hello All, I have been working with my Family Tree Maker (FTM) program ALL day long - Thursday is my day off - and I have been writing to various volunteers for information from Broderbund CD's. I am wondering if anyone from the list owns any of the FTM CD's???? For my 60th! Birthday my brother gave me FTM "Family Archives" National Genealogical Society Quarterly, Vol. 1-85, 1600's-1900's. I have not yet even taken a peek, as I have enough "irons in the fire" right now. But, I will post when I begin to search through and will be willing to do any lookups. Broderbund has strict rules regarding information being posted to multiple sites, so I cannot copy their information for the list, but I can do lookups for you - but not until after February. That may seem a strange time frame - however, I had planned to be in Ireland researching right now and had to postpone my trip until mid-January. So, I mainly need to have all my spare moments preparing for my research trip to Co Tyrone and Northern Ireland. The majority of the information I am posting now is from my past research there and I am working on different databases to store the information. This list has been very quiet lately - please post! Hi List, Just so all of you don't get discouraged I had to tell you that I and another member of the list have made a connection. Bill and Maria Turnier and I have found out that Bill's great-grandfather and mine were brothers from Ballyhaunis, County Mayo. Here I thought that my g-grandfather was an only child with no parents - ha-ha ;) Just don't give up, when you least expect it something happens. Thanks Bill and Maria for putting it all together. So often when I am posting information or receiving inquiries from newly "found" FERGUS people I think back to the laborious efforts of the two men who researched and published the "Fergus Family History" book tracing mainly the ancestry of Francis FERGUS and his wife, Mary McCORMICK. They were Morris Freeman Fergus of Dayton, OH and John Franklin Fergus of Columbus, OH. I know that descendants of John Franklin Fergus are subscribers to this list. Are there any subscribers who are related to Morris? Would someone please post to the list any information on the beginning of the "Fergus Family History" - how the men started? Why? Did they work together? Or, did they both research and then discover the work of the other? I would love to have this information so that an updated history could include the beginnings of the book upon which so many of us depend upon for finding our ancestry. I am receiving many inquiries about the book by those persons who do not have copy. To my knowledge, there are no copies available. If anyone does have any spare or extra copies I would greatly appreciate having them as I am trying to find one to donate to the Ulster Folk Park, Emigration Studies Library located in Omagh, Co Tyrone. It is a repository for family histories of people who originated from Ireland . . . and of course, "my" Francis FERGUS was born in County Tyrone. I have researched at this library and will be returning there in January to continue to find that link from America back to Ireland and any FERGUS cousins currently living there. >From the inqueries I have received I think that perhaps there is enough interest to update and republish the "Fergus Family History" book in the future - but for now, it is important to compile as much missing information as possible. Are YOU "sitting" on any information that should be included? Please! do not remain silent, as now is the time to send in your information. I will be unable to have a rush of information arrive on my desk at the last minute. In the last 2 days I have received posts from two different lineages of DITTY families which were unknown until now. I have no information forward on: Catherine DITTY/Samuel FERGUS who migrated to Missouri; or Anna FERGUS/William PATTON (other than 1 more generation of LINDSLEY); or Polly FERGUS/Abraham BROWN; or Charlotte FERGUS/Cyrus HAYWOOD (only 1 generation further). Can anyone on this list add additional generations??? Did these lines "die" out or were they "daughtered" out? I am certainly willing to post as much information as I have time for to this list, but the list will not survive with only one person posting . . . please "jump in" even with small vignettes of your family - this could be a story which has been passed down through the years about your grandparents or great-grandparents. It will all add to the interest and knowledge of the subscribers to this list. Get posting folks!
