I hope all of you had a wonderful day of Thanksgiving recalling all that you are grateful for . . . and for me at the top of the list is God, my Creator, Jesus my Saviour, and the Holy Spirit my counselor - and next on the list is my FAMILY - all of it - my parents, their parents, and so on . . . back to Francis FERGUS and his wife Mary McCORMICK who had the courage to endure the journey to this new world and new life and to plant, harvest, and build not only buildings but a large industrious family from which many of us descend. I rejoice in finding collateral cousins - at least one connection a week! And, on a lighter vein I would like any who are not aware of the following website to take a visit and see what may be of use to you. I for one began on the Internet just one year ago and I knew NOTHING about a computer - as some of you who are more computer literate can probably sense my stumbling about at times. But, that is all right for me as I press on and learn a wee bit at a time so that I can retain a new skill. I suggest you take a visit to: http://www.dummiesdaily.com/ It is the online version of the many books written "Dummies etc., etc., etc." Some I delete as I am not at all interested in the particular tip and others I save in a folder for future reference - which I may never look at, but take comfort in knowing I have stored away some unusual tips. Have a great day! The 1800 U.S. census enumeration began on the first Monday in August, 1800. The microfilms file number is M32 and totals 52 rolls as follows: CT #1-#3,DE #4, D.C.#5, ME #6-#8, MD #9-#12, MA #13-#19, NH #20, NY #21-#28, NC #29-#34, PA #35-#44, RI #45-#46, SC #47-#50, VT #51-#52. Since my ancestor, Francis FERGUS had moved from PA to VA I did search through M32-#38(Cumberland Co) and found no FERGUS listings. There are no 1800 U.S. census records for VA. After you have gathered miscellaneous information concerning collateral lineages and still don't have sufficient answers to tie in your own progenitor, it is time to organize. 1. Create a Miscellaneous Database. Information from scraps of paper should be typed into a database, so that it can be sorted, and you can have "finger-tip" information when you need it. This will enable you to quickly tie together distant family members. Too, it is easier to "see" where people belong. Normally, one suspects that persons residing in the same county with the same surname are related, especially if they were all born in the same state. 2. Make comparisons. For example: You are looking at the surname Franklin on the 1850 Rockingham Co., Va. Census. Some of them were born in Pa. Time to calculate on each one of them the time they migrated into Virginia. Start with the dates of birth of their individual children. Those born in Pa. signify the time-period the family resided in Pa. Those born in Va. signify the year the family removed to Va. Did all the families migrate about the same date? If so, aren't they suspect to be related? 3. Don't stop collecting. Always collect little bits of information. Persons who resided in the same areas, or counties, where your ancestors were, and who had genealogies written, or biographical sketches, are worthy of notation. Read carefully "their" migrations, deeds, etc., and how they compare to yours. This is how written genealogies, biographies and county histories become valuable. 4. The earliest records are invaluable...because there was a limited number of people. If there were only 2 Franklin names in the 1810 Rockingham Co., Va. Census, then they might be "brothers", "cousins", "parents", etc. Think like this. Clarify if they are, or are not, by studying your miscellaneous database. When you can't find your ancestor, organization of the miscellaneous information is often the key to where to search next. It is essential to know the genealogies of all the people in a given area. crussell@traversecity.com http://www.traverse.net/people/crussell/fergus_family.htm Listowner FERGUS-L-request@rootsweb.com

Looking for any information on this lady who is buried near Francis FERGUS in Tennessee. Note spelling on tombstone is with an "e", but could have also been the traditional "u" and stone erected at a later date. Rather curious. Any explanations? I am working diligently on another Internet FERGUS connection so that all of us can be found. And, I need help please again. I need to add "A FERGUS Reasercher's page" to my website to list the e-mail/snail mail addresses of Fergus researchers. Who would be willing to be listed? Pretty please I will need perhaps 3 people to move forward. The page would list your name and clickable e-mail address, snail mail if you wish. Any volunteers? Nov 15, 1998 - 11:38 - Email:Janet Farrington Brown, brown@navix.net This query was posted to the FERGUS Family Facts website - can anyone help out here? If so, please post back to Janet plus send a copy to the FERGUS-L. Thanks! Looking for information about Washington W. Fergus. His daughter was Mary Emeline Fergus b. 4,6,1857 (probably Hancock County, Ill.) d. 11,2,1926 Mo. Washington W. Fergus married Emeline Hannah Spangler b. 1826 Ill. d. 1861 Ill. Mary Emeline was four years old when mother died, and father took her and possibly other children to Monroe County, Mo. and left Mary Emeline with a family named Green who reared her. Mary Emeline (Emma) m. 1879 Raphael Clement Leake. Not that it makes any difference to me, but this Fergus family was not Roman Catholic as Emma converted at marriage. (I want to be real PC about this...) I have no further information on Washington W. Fergus as he simply disappeared from Emma's life. Would suppose he was born ca. 1825. Would appreciate any help on this. Thanks, Janet Brown
