Cynthia, The name FERGUS is a characteristic Scottish name explained as meaning " Firey" or "leader or brave Chieftan There are a number of early forms of the name Fergus to include: FEARGHAS, FERGHAIS, and FHEARGUIS. The name is derived from Gaelic "Fear" meaning man and " Gais" meaning spear. Hope this helps, Emily bernardf@intrstar.net -----Original Message----- From: Cynthia N. Searching for a person willing to provide information for a FERGUS clan webpage listing. I registered for it, but do not have time right now to complete the information. Take a browse and see if you might be able to help add information at http://www.clansandnames.org/fergus.shtml The FERGUS Family Facts website is linked to this but it looks pretty "naked" without any information. Who wants to "jump in"? You don't have to be an expert! Help please! Rootsweb - important URL - visit and learn a bit about our sponsor of these lists and thousands of others! http://www.rootsweb.com/ ------------- What is RSL? I. WHAT IS THE RSL AND HOW IS IT USED? The RootsWeb Surname List (RSL) is a list or registry of surnames (at the time I write this, there are more than 600,000 surnames that have been submitted by more than 75,000 net.genealogists, with additional names arriving at the rate of more 700 a day). Associated with each surname are dates and locations, and information about how to contact the person who submitted the surname. If you are researching a family with the same surname, in the same area and similar time frame, then you might find it useful to contact the person who submitted the surname to share and compare notes. Do be realistic: If you're researching Woodbury in Alabama in the 1800s, a person with info on the Woodbury family of England in the 1600s isn't likely to be of much help. I mention this because some submitters have withdrawn their data from the RSL due to the flood of e-mail they've received, much of it as off target as the example I just gave. What does it cost? There is no charge to participate, although RootsWeb, the major sponsor of this effort, does accept voluntary contributions. If you find the RSL useful and would like to support it financially, please please visit http://www.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/how-to-subscribe.html for information. (Really, we do need and appreciate your support! It's amazing how this beast is eating computer cycles and bandwidth.) If you'd like to have your surnames included in the RSL, there is a submission form on the web at http://rsl.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/rslsql.cgi Alternatively, data may be submitted by e-mail. Directions on how to do so are included in Section III If you see a surname listed that interests you, especially if there is a good match on dates and locations, contact the person who submitted the surname. If you're accessing the RSL via the interactive search on the web, all you need to do to learn how to contact the submitter is to select their nametag, listed at the end of each surname entry. Otherwise, you'll need to order the individual address from the mailserver, as described in Section II. All the addresses listed are fairly current (verified within the last twelve months) and the best we currently have on file. There's no need to contact us about a bad address; if the submitter doesn't resurface with a valid address before the annual verification process, their data will be dropped from the list. Because of all the data scrubbing involved, the web-searchable RSL is currently only updated once a month, on the first Sunday of the month. (We're exploring ways to update it more frequently without going nuts. Please be patient!) Starting the next day, the new surnames are posted to rsl-update (an Internet genealogy mailing list -- to subscribe, just send the message "subscribe" (without the quotation marks) to rsl-update-request@rootsweb.com) and to soc.genealogy.surnames.global (the USENET genealogy newsgroup devoted to surnames) and alt.genealogy (a general purpose genealogy newsgroup). The first day, the new A surnames are posted, the second day the new B surnames, etc. (The full RSL is simply too large to be posted in such a manner.) The databases accessible via e-mail are typically updated a few days later. http://rsl.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/rslsql.cgi
Happy New Year FERGUS folk! I am spending the day reading, responding to, filing and deleting 198 messages that have accumulated in my e-mail read file - so some of you may be hearing from me today. I would like to call attention to a wonderful surname resource site that allows you to search for any surname, see the postings from others, and add a response, or add a surname if not already listed. It is a great way to exhcange information. Take a look: http://www.surnameweb.org/ Best wishes for a peaceful and prosperous New Year! Just thought I'd pass this on: ANCESTRY.COM http://www.ancestry.com is allowing non-subscribers a free month of their service if you sign up between now and Dec. 31. No purchase is required of any service. They have quite a few databases, including Death Certificate info for OHIO, etc. They also have an interesting feature that scans obituaries from newspapers around the US. They don't seem to have any international data available. >added I have done a FERGUS search and have extracted all the information to add to my database and Shirley FERGUS and her daughter Emmy are helping me assimilate the information, write to new-found FERGUS e-mail addresses, write to funeral homes for info on FERGUS people for us to contact. You may be interested in searching for other family names you are researching! I subscribed for the free month, but actually in about 6 or 7 hrs. I had searched and found all the FERGUS info for this year. As soon as the New Year rings in we will have a Roll Call, so start preparing for it by organizing your info! My best, Cynthia Sure beats the $59.00 a year!

Bill McGREW's book of transcriptions of 15 Graveyards within Omagh District, Co. Tyrone(1688-1900) has just been published and is now available. The book was launched at the Ulster American Folk Park Emigration Library, Omagh. The 184 pages are packed with names and dates from 15 graveyards located within a 5 mile radius of Omagh, Co Tyrone. Omagh became the county town of Tyrone in 1687 (the U.S. equivalent to the courthouse location for a county). I have just received copy of "Tombstones of the Omey" and can attest to this fine genealogical work. In March I walked the entire Cappagh Cemetery row by row, reading and looking for one of my surnames. I did not find it, but a close variation is listed in this new book. Since the transcriptions began in 1985 there are many gravestones which now are unreadable almost 14 years later. What a valuable contribution Bill McGrew, his family, the Omagh Family History Society, and the North of Ireland Family History Society has bequested to generations to come! Even though I am an Associate Member of the NIFHS, I encourage each of you who has roots in Co Tyrone whether you are a member of NIFHS or not to purchase your own copy of this valuable book. It is a non-profit project to help benefit the society. Therefore, I will do a look-up to see if a surname is listed, however, you will need to purchase the book to find additional information on the listings. The book can be obtained from the North of Ireland Family History Society. Price (including postage) £9 UK, Ireland and Europe; £11 North America and Australia. Please note that ONLY STERLING cheques/checks/money orders can be accepted. Please go to the NIFHS Website http://www.mni.co.uk/nifhs/form1.htm and download the form which has an ORDER section and information. The easiest and most inexpensive way to obtain U.K. Sterling cheques is from RUESCH INTERNATIONAL BANK, 700 Eleventh Street NW, Washington DC, USA 200001-4507. Toll-free 1-800-424-2923. For a small fee they will post you a Sterling cheque made payable to: North of Ireland Family History Society. Today I received the first published copy of "Tombstones of Omey" to arrive Stateside from the General Secretary of the North of Ireland Family History Society. It is a monumental work documenting 184 pages of listings of 15 cemeteries located within a five mile radius of Omagh, Ireland (now Northern Ireland). Mr. William J. McGrew and his wife transcribed all of the tombstones over ten years ago and it has now just been published. Unfortunately, I was unable to attend the book launching at the Emigration Studies Library to which I received an invitation. There is a listing for Cappagh Cemetery for a Francis FERGUYS who died at age 81 on Oct 8, 1796 (so born in 1715) and (probably his wife) Jane FERGUYS who died at age 61 years on April 6, 1784 (so born in 1723). My g-g-g-g grandfather, Francis FERGUS was born Sept 8, 1752. Francis FERGUYS would have been 37 years old and Jane FERGUYS would have been 27 years old. The time frame would certainly fit! In March, when I was in Omagh Bill McGrew told me to look in Cappagh Cemetery - so I did. I walked row by row looking and reading each tombstone and did not find this one. So, it is possible that I missed it or that it is now unreadable from when it was first recorded. Bill has offered to take me there upon my return. Only 6 days before the launching of the book, Bill McGrew suffered a stroke and lost his speech. However, I learned that he did attend the book launching and walked unaided. His brother delivered the speech for him. What a great blessing to have Bill be recovering so rapidly. If you are so inclined, please add Bill McGrew to your prayers for recovery of his speech. As you might have guessed, he is a remarkable gentleman. The research material for the time frame of the 18th century is almost non-existent, however I will continue to work on this new information. Does anyone on this list have any information which would confirm a connection from Francis FERGUYS to Francis FERGUS? Please post it to the list! As soon as I find the information for ordering the book I will post it to this list. Francis FERGUS ( my g-g-g-g-grandfather) was born in Co Tyrone, IRE 8 September 1752 and was in America by the Revolutionary War (1776) when I then have records of him in the army. BUT, I would like to find that connection back to Ireland and the family he left there. I want to find the names of his parents and siblings - if at all possible. The following information is not documented so I do not know the accuracy of the following. Francis FERGUS (b. Sept 8, 1752. d. 1841) came to America with his father and 3 to 4 brothers possibly named John, Hugh, Thomas or Samuel one brother stayed in America while the remainder of the family returned to Ireland. Francis served in the Revolutionary War in 1776-1778. In 1780 he married Mary MCCORMICK in Cumberland Co, PA. There were 4 children born at McClure's Gap, PA (James, Elizabeth, Samuel, and Jincy (or Jency), before the family moved to VA. and fathered I am unable to connect Francis to any other FERGUS people once here in America even though we are a small surname there does not seem to be a connection to theothers who emigrated in the 1770's. Any additional information would be my best Christmas gift! It covers the years from 1631 to 1888. If you would like me to look someone up just send me an email with the name, state (if possible) and parents (if possible).
