Subject: FERGUS - Ann, b. 1788 Lynn, I am returning to Northern Ireland to continue FERGUS research there. Can you give me any other information on Ann FERGUS Duncan (place and date of death). Can you carry your line forward for me - from Ann to you please? Any information might put pieces together for me. I know this is the second request and I am wondering if I lost your response. I'll appreciate a reply/re-reply. Thanks, Cynthia
My name is Mel Ditty and this is a test run. I doubt if I have the format correct; please inform. Thanks, Mel
Lately I have seen a number of people requesting information on gravestone inscriptions for areas of NI. Perhaps some of you on these lists would be interested in the books and microfiche available for purchase which covers NI Ulster (Co Antrim (includes Belfast), Co Armagh, Co Down, Co Fermanagh, Co Londonderry, and Co Tyrone) - from the NIFHS (North of Ireland Family History Society) see their website for additional information http://www.mni.co.uk/nifhs 1997 Book "Mallusk Memorials", Co Antrim gravestone inscriptions Microfiche "Carved in Stone" Carnmoney gravestone inscriptions 1998 Microfiche "Armagh Co Museum Records & Index" 1998 Book "Tombstones of the Omey": inscriptions of 15 graveyards (both Prod and RC) within a 5-Mile Radius of Omagh, Co Tyrone. BTW - I have no connection to the NIFHS other than I am a grateful Associate Member who lives in the U.S., researches in Omagh, Co Tyrone, Co Mayo, and Belfast and have found the Society to be most helpful. They do publish a wonderful journal 2x/year that lists other members and their areas of research in addition to the members who are willing to exchange information . . . currently I am helping a lady from Co Down with information stateside that is pertinent to her family. As a member of the newsgroups supporting research in the counties of Ulster in Northern Ireland and an associate member of NIFHS I would like to recommend a wonderful new publication listed above. I am continuing to volunteer to look up SURNAMES ONLY in this important contribution to Ulster genealogy. Please post your request to me directly crussell@traversecity.com , NOT to the newsgroup, and you will receive your reply to your e-mail address in order for other postings to receive precedence. Title the Subject line as follows: Lookup - "Omey" - SURNAME (in capitals) If you request more than 1 surname please ALPHABETIZE them in the subject line for easier lookup Do NOT ask me for additional information other than surname. I ethically think that if anyone wishes more information each of us should be purchasing the newly published book which will help to support the on-going work of the NIFHS to add to the body of research in Northern Ireland. I am grateful there is such a voluntary non-profit organization which depends upon the support of those who are interested in genealogy. There are 15 graveyards transcribed in Bill McGrew's wonderful new publication available through the NIFHS, North of Ireland Family History Society available through their website http://www.mni.co.uk/nifhs The cost in U.S. funds is approximately $18.50 or 11 pounds sterling, which includes the postage. The book is not indexed as to surnames, so I have to search through all 15 graveyard listings to find surnames. There are a total of 615 surnames listed. It is wonderfully organized - alphabetical order by graveyard listing tombstones bearing inscriptions from 1688 up to 1900. Each graveyard is listed with locations by Ordnance Survey sheets and location designations. The book includes both Protestant and Roman Catholic listings along with a brief explanation/history of each church. The graveyards included are within a 5 mile radius of the town of Omagh are: Cappagh C of I Clanabogan C of I (amalgamation of 3 parishes - Donacavey, Dromore and Drumragh) Crevenagh (Interdenominational) Donaghanie (Interdenominational) Drumnakilly C of I Drumragh - New Section Drumragh - Old Section (Interdenominational) Dunmullan (Interdenominational) Edenderry C of I Edebderry Presbyterian Lislimnaghan C of I Mountjoy Presbyterian (formerly know as Crossroads Church) St. Columba's C of I St. Mary's RC, Killyclogher St. Mary's RC, Knockmoyle I will list any variations I am aware of. It is important it is to research the many variations of your surnames as people in that era depended upon what they heard and wrote it according to their spelling abilities. Please remember to be kind to one another! Greetings from Tennennee!! And Tony, I have the following written by Morris F. Fergus of Dayton, Ohio written for the occasion of the erection and dedication of the grave of Francis Fergus. A TRIBUTE TO FRANCIS FERGUS Francis Fergus was born in Tyrone Co, Ireland, on Sept. 8,1752. He was of Scotch-Irish descent, and his ancestors had migrated from Scotland probably a century or more before his birth. Tradition tells that he and three brothers came to America a few years prior to the Revolutionary War and settled near the city of Philadelphia. While these four brother came to America seeking new homes and a better way of life, they also found new adventures, strange people and a country soon to be engaged in War. At the outbreak of the Rev. War between the American Colonies and England, two of the brothers returned to Ireland, leaving Francis and one brother in America. As an early minifestation of his loyalty to his new home country, Francis Fergus enlisted on August 3, 1776, in the Continental Army from Bucks County, Penn. He served a few months in Captain Jameson's Company of the Penn. Regiment under Colonel Roberts. In March, 1777, Francis re enlisted and served 9 months as a wagoner under Capt. James Barclay and was in the battles of Brandywine, Germantown, and White Horse. In Feb, 1778, he re enlisted and served 2 months under General John Lacey. He also participated in the battles of Eautaw Springs and King's Mountain. Francis Fergus was loyal to his country. He was thrifty and law abiding. He married an American girl and established a home in which 9 children were born and reared. He transmitted to his children and descendants his devotion to his country. His eldest son, James Fergus, participated in the War of 1812 against England, and rose to the rank of General in the American Army. His descendants names will be found on the rolls of soldiers who have enlisted in the service to defend their country. The marker erecdted on his grave and dedicated this day, Ocr. 12, 1941, is given by his Country as an expression of appreciation for his loyalty and service. Francis is my GGGGG GF through Jincy Fergus Ditty and Abraham Ditty through their daughter, Susan Ditty who married Charter William Mitchell-through their son Mires Haywood Mitchell who married Sarah Catherine Nabors-through their daughter Ruth Wesley Mitchell who married William Burrell Ward- through their son Ode Ward who married Beatrice Melvina Woods-through their son James Earl Ward who married Willa Eugenia Burgess and then me, Vicki Loretta Ward Moore. OK Jim, I'm asking about documentation. I have found a listing in the newly-published "Tombstones of Omey" for Francis FERGUYS and probably his wife Jane as follows: Francis FERGUYS died Oct 8, 2796, age 81 years (which means that he was born ca 1715) Jane FERGUYS died April 6, 1784, age 61 years (which means that she was born ca 1723) My g-g-g-g-grandfather, Francis FERGUS was born in Co Tyrone Sept 8, 1752. He immigrated to PA ca 1776 as he was in the Revolutionary War here. That would have made the above Jane 27 years old if she was his mother, and the Francis listed on the same gravestone would have been about 37. I have researched in Belfast at PRONI and also at the Library in Omagh, Co Tyrone and this is the first possibility I have found. I don't want to jump to any conclusion without documentation - BUT - my question is how would I make that connection if I am unable to find any documentation. My FERGUS family is Protestant and I have been to the Pres. Historical Foundation in Belfast and Mr. Bonar has checked and found nothing. I have followed through with the C of I records with the local pastors, again no information. I welcome additional suggestions. And, I will be returning in April to continue researching but WHERE would you suggest next??? And if I cannot uncover documentation, then what? Thank you for your invitation re:documentation as it is exactly where I am stuck right now. The time period is difficult to find documentation. I do intend to recontact the Cappagh C of I pastor upon my return as I will follow through on whatever records there are for the FERGUYS listed above. The name FERGUS is a characteristic Scottish name explained as meaning " Firey" or "leader or brave Chieftan There are a number of early forms of the name Fergus to include: FEARGHAS, FERGHAIS, and FHEARGUIS. The name is derived from Gaelic "Fear" meaning man and " Gais" meaning spear. Hope this helps, Emily bernardf@intrstar.net -----Original Message----- From: Cynthia N. Hello FERGUS-List Subscribers, FERGUS-Digest Subscribers AND other persons I am related to or are related to the surname FERGUS to whom I am sending a blind copy! ----------- One of our own FERGUS list members is a part of the website listed. George sent me the URL to look and see the extensive organization of the COMBS family research on the Internet as a possible model for the surname FERGUS. It is indeed a marvelous collection of people working together and building an extensive base of information on one family name. Please take a thorough look at: "the family list, Combs-L, who maintain a website for data on the surnname. It is extensive. Combs researchers are really into data, not republishing family histories that are undocumented." The URL is: http://www.rootsweb.com/~combs/index.html Our FERGUS newsgroup began with just two of us, Shirley/Barney FERGUS and myself. We now number 32 subscribers to the List and an additional 2 to the Digest format. I would like to know if there is any interest at all to totally change the format of the FERGUS Family Facts page working toward something like the COMBS site? Of course, theirs is a joint effort, and I would have to have a bevy of willing volunteers to help is there is a desire. The greatest thing about the idea is that it would not be difficult if there were various volunteers willing to be reponsible for one area. I would like to have some feedback directed and posted to the list about this possiblity. Is anyone interested? A site like the COMBS includes all links and lineages and is indeed easy to understand and follow. Yes, it is missing those colorful pictures and flying flags, but I could still have a few on my home website. And, then I would be able to add the other families in my heritage to my personal webpage as the FERGUS Research Page would move. It was my intention to give FERGUS information/research a jump start and I think that has been accomplished as we have gathered a lot of FERGUS folk from all parts and different countries. What about it? Would each subscriber to this list and any others who would like to join in this effort be willing to evaluate this new possibility and their willingness to participate and at what level. Those subscribed to the list post to the list please so all can get a feeling of the direction we should be heading. Thank you for this consideration - a great way to begin the new year. And, thank you again George, for sharing this site!
