With Valentine's Day approaching I am sending out this HEARTFELT greeting to each and every FERGUS! For all of you FERGUS folk with ties back to the above counties in the Republic of Ireland here are the current listings from the 09 Phone Directory for FERGUS. Would anyone volunteer for the project of writing to each of these to make an inquiry as to their lineage? There are a total of 22 listings and the same letter could be sent to all. I also think that it would be most important to enclose 2 IRC's (International Reply Coupons - these are available at the U.S. Post Office and cost approximately $1.35@) or approx. $60. The IRC's allow a person in another country to take the IRC's to their post office and return a letter without incurring any cost to them - it also encourages a return response as they know that it has been expensive to provide the return postage.) In addition to the cost of the IRC's, there is the added cost for of another $13 for mailing the letters from the U.S. I am wondering if perhaps there would be someone willing to "execute" and "float" this whole project or one person willing to "execute" and a few others willing to donate funds? It is a great experience to write to people in other countries, and especially English-speaking ones! I am asking for volunteers as all of my time and funds are ear-marked for my upcoming trip to Ireland/Northern Ireland in May to do further research which of course I shall be sharing with each of you. I will be glad to gather any funds for the above project and send them on to the person willing to write the letters, or they may be sent direct. Although this may be be your particular FERGUS lineage, I am researching, transcribing, copying, and compiling information on ALL of the FERGUS information I find, not just my own lineage. It will have to be a joint effort for all of us to help one another out . . . and what if we find out that we are ALL related, way back when? I'll bet there are a lot of connections to be made. Who is willing? I'll be glad to share the letter that I wrote to all FERGUS listings several years ago - so many have had a first contact and that might serve as a launching pad to continue. Step out folks! More from Anita Cole Dear Mr. Baumbach, I emailed you from my sister's back in October. I am finally online. One source of my information was a book by Groves Harrison Cartledge titled Historical Sketches Presbyterian Churches and Early Settlers in Northeast Georgia. It is available through the Madison County Georgia Historical Society. Groves was born in 1820 so he remembered Steven Groves, his grandfather. William Fergus died in 1819 so he had no personal remembrance of him. He did know the maiden name of William's wife, Armstrong. When I went to York, South Carolina, I found a deed that says, "I, William Fergus, and my wife, Margaret. So from these two sources concluded that his wife was Margaret Armstrong. That's about all I know about her. I don't know when or where they married. I have found several distant relatives in my area who are interested in our history and have done some research. We plan to get together in March and compare notes. Two of them have said they have quite a bit of information about the Fergus family. If there is anything documented and new about John Fergus, I will send it on to you. Sincerely, Anita Cole
The following William Fergus was a brother of my John and his brother James Fergus, all from PA to York Co., SC, to Wilkes Co., GA and beyond.
