Hello List members Can anyone help this lady she is not a subscriber. This was sent to me ,so I thought I would post it for her Please send replies to the list ,The answers may be of help to someone else who may be on the list and it will go to the archives for someone who doesn't know about our list Thanks Shirley Shirley, I am not a Fergus descendent, My GGAunt Laura Jane Wilkinson born 1836 in Ohio (daughter of Solomon Scribner Wilkinson and Charlotte Packard) married Francis Fergus born 1827 Montgomery County West Virginia (Son of Samuel Fergus BD unknown) Laura and Frances Fergus lived in Harrison County Missouri, I have notes form some one saying there was information on Laura's father Solomon in a Fergus family bible, I have been trying to locate that bible to see if I could get Name of Solomon's mother since I have been unable to find it anywhere else. I do have names and birth dates of Laura and Frances's children if any one is interested. Does any one know of Fergus family bible containing information on Wilkinson? Thanks Ellen Wankowski
To: Cynthia and the Group, If it helps any at all Cynthia, I feel very guilty not volunteering to help; don't know that I have very much to offer. I am very grateful to Cynthia for all she has done to aid and add to my heritage of my beginnings. I know you are doing much and I appreciate that; you are so right about if everyone did something no one would have to do very much. But where I am is: I am loaded just trying to sort, etc the enormous data everyone's put before me. Additionally, I changed Genealogy software and in the process of filling in data in the new program. I am sorta computer-literate, but what fortunate circumstances I have in a friend, not into genealogy, but is, in my opinion, a master at Web Page creation. He has asked me in times past to let him make me a home page and I didn't want to squander my time/energy in that direction. That was before I became addicted to genealogy. So with time, I would very much like to get into html and online world of Web page work. Note I didn't promise that I would, time has a nasty little habit of changing what I want to spend my future on. I'm sure this hasn't lent any light to or for you Cynthia, but it sure has helped my guilt of not holding up my end of the log. Mel Ditty

Good Day! I just want to give you an update on our new Rootsweb website . . . FERGUS subscriber, Bill Richards, from Kenora, Ontario CANADA has been graciously volunteering his computer talents. Bill is a GenWeb host for the Manitoba, CA site. Also, he is the gentleman who connected to the family I posted from Racine, Wisconsin back to his roots in Scotland. Now, he has volunteered to use his expertise in web design and has been diligently working with me for the last 4 hrs. to put up the "FERGUS Research Worldwide" website. And, Vicki Jensen, another subscriber has volunteered to retrieve the messages that have been archived since the beginning of the newsgroup. These will be organized by month and will be available on this new website! >From the very first day I found the genealogy community online I had hoped to find a site with all kinds of information and data available for FERGUS'. It was not to be found . . . and so, it was my vision to begin to work toward this end. When I was to speak (and give a slide show on my recent trips to Ireland/Northern Ireland) for the FERGUS Reunion in Piqua, Ohio last June, I wanted to have a website on board prior to that. And, another subscriber (Doc Dougherty), who is not directly related to the FERGUS', but has FERGUS cousins, surprised me with the beginning of a FERGUS website! What an incredible gift!!! Next, I met Shirley and Barney FERGUS (Doc's "lost" cousins) at the reunion and we began a FERGUS partnership of gathering and sharing information. Shirley and her daughter, Emmy, have been key contact persons, as I have forwarded names to contact - they have written to each to encourage joining the FERGUS newsgroup and to sign the Guest Books. Shirley and Barney became the second subscriber(s) to the newsgroup. Yes, we were up and rolling with their help! Now, I must acknowledge Doc in his own paragraph. And, for those of you who know me you will have a :) or a ;) when I relate that I did give him a fair warning that: I am a visual person; scale counts; color (colour) is critical; flags are favs; persistence is not always a gift; perserverance can test endurance; and, I had/have little experience with PCs = just wasn't born with computer genes! Soooooo, I know you are getting the picture here. Yes, Doc has received literally hundreds - perhaps 400-500 e-mail messages from me, and, patiently worked through each one to create the FERGUS Family Website that I hope all of you are familiar with. This has been a monumental task which via the Guest Book permitted persons to post their lineage. Yes, a great beginning! Thank you Doc, you know you are appreciated! This website will remain, however, now I will begin to move some of the information to the FERGUS Research Worldwide website to allow me to acknowledge the other family alliances I have. Changes are almost always complicated, can be difficult, but in the end the result is always a step forward! We are on that threshold now. There is still more work to be done before announcing the URL, but it will soon be up and running. I wanted to publicly thank and acknowledge the unselfish gifts that Doc, Shirley, Emmy, and Barney have supplied with love and humor (humour). Notice the spelling changes? Well the alternate of the American spelling is of course the English spelling to honour our members from Canada, Ireland ( the whole island), Scotland, and Australia. The FERGUS' are worldwide! Hello all Fergus folks! Cynthia I will be glad to help input items to the website. I don't have the computer/website tech skills so can't help there. I won't be around for the meeting. Let me know when you're ready for the help. Tony Bertotti
Hello to all on this FERGUS list! Nine months ago when this list began with Shirley/Barney FERGUS in Harrells, North Carolina I never imagined that we would have so many subscribers that I would need to post the following . . . but I must, if you are to communicate with me with the expectation of receiving a reply in the near future. I must ask all to post FERGUS queries and questions to the list, which of course, I do read - and NOT to me personally, unless it is a personal matter involving ONLY me. I simply am NOT able to keep up with the 100+ posts I receive each day. No, they are not all in regards to this list. But, many are. In addition to this list, I also am listowner for the DODD list (my grandfather Guy Carleton FERGUS married Dorothy Mae DODD) and my middle name is DODD. And, when I became involved with online genealogy I was looking for a way to contribute something since so many people shared with me and gave me a boost when I was trying to "stand up". So, I do lookups for 2 unrelated, but important books that pertain to Northern Ireland . . . one is the Northern Ireland Phone Book - I seem to have the ONLY one who is online, or perhaps who is willing to do lookups. And, the other book is the newly-published book "the Tombstones of the Omey" by my friend Bill McGrew who lives in Omagh, Co Tyrone. Bill and his family spent a number of years transcribing 15 cemeteries within a 5 miles radius of the town of Omagh - all of the readable tombstones are listed and many tombstones have multiple listings (husband, wife, and many children - some of whom had emigrated). The list covers 1690-1900. I subscribe to the Scotch-Irish list, the Northern Ireland list, the Co Tyrone, NI list, the Co Antrim, NI list, the Shamrock list, and the Ireland list in order to continue my FERGUS research overseas. So, I am explaining this to let you know that I have A LOT to read, most is deleted, and some I send queries or replies to . . . it all amount to taking up a lot of my time. The last week of April I am planning on returning to Belfast and Omagh to continue the FERGUS research there. I must prepare to go so that my time is well-spent while I am there. I will spend most of my time in the libraries and will be at PRONI (Public Records Office of Northern Ireland) on Thursdays when they open at 9:15 a.m. until 9:45 p.m. But, I must be prepared. We have been accepted for a Rootsweb FERGUS website - and this will take work - and VOLUNTEERS - I cannot do it with the help of only one or two persons - first of all, I do not know HTML - is there a volunteer? And secondly, I am gathering the information that needs to be posted. Therefore I cannot also input or manage the site - WHO IS WILLING TO SPEND A LITTLE TIME? If many help the work will be light, if not I guarantee you it will not get done. Now, I know that many of you are not familiar with online genealogy and it is at times intimidating . . . yes, even for me. But, I have invited, coached, encouraged, begged for you to post and to help . . . the rubber must meet the road for this FERGUS information to become accessible. Hey, jump in! Join the volunteer force! Hoping to hear from all of you . . . soon, and very soon, Cynthia FERGUS Website http://www.traverse.net/people/crussell/fergus_family.htm FERGUS Newsgroup FERGUS-L@rootsweb.com Rootsweb Archives: http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl
Filby, P. William, ed. "Passenger and Immigration Lists Index": a Guide to Published Arrival Records of about 500,000 Passengers who Came to the United States and Canada in the Seventeenth, Eighteenth, and Nineteenth Centuries. 3 volumes plus annual supplements. Detroit: Gale Research Co., 1981. This is currently the most comprehensive alphabetical list of passengers available, and is a good place to start a search. However, it is not inclusive by any means, and the items listed below should also be consulted since it is based on published lists only. Many passenger lists have never been published. Recently I found the following listings from the many volumes of Filby's: from the 1986 Supplement: FERGUS, James Glenny n.a.; Allegany (Allegheny) Co., Pa., 1890 9702 p45 ======== from the 1st edition, Vol 1, A-G: FERGUS, David 60; New York, N.Y. 1822 9268 p129 FERGUS, Eugene J n.a.; Phil, Pa 1860 9295 p 37 FERGUS, James n.a.; Phil, Pa 1860 9295 p 37 FERGUS, James 24; New York, NY 1774 1088 p 33 FERGUS, Jannit 60; New York, NY 1822 9268 p129 FERGUS, Margaret 24; Savanna(h), Ga 1821 9890 p 92 FERGUS, Mary 26; New York, NY 1822 9268 p129 ====== If you see a connection to any of the above names please post it back to this list. Hi folks, just a word of caution here. There is an attachment being circulated on several of the mailing lists right now. The file is called happy99.exe. Its a new years fireworks display if you run the exe file. Its a concern but its not a major panic. If you happen to see the file when it comes, just delete it, DO NOT run it. If you have run the file already then there is a way to get rid of it. You go to this site on the net and get the fix.. http://www.pspl.com/trojan_info/win32/happy99.htm The bottom line here folks, people that have it, don't know their sending it. Thats how it works. If you want to be sure, go to Find and do a search for happy99.exe, if you find it, delete it, and then go to the net for the fix. Its not the end of the world, but becareful, Bill Richards
Calling all willing volunteers for help on Sunday at 11:00 a.m. EST - 1:00 p.m. approx. In order to get our new super duper website ready for take-off we need to gather ideas and volunteer for various areas of expertise/responsibility. So far volunteers are Shirley Fergus from N.C.(#1 Right-Hand Lady), George Baumbach (who had the 1st FERGUS site!), Jill Fergus McGirr (another willing volunteer who does lookups on CD), and Bill Richards (Scotland>Manitoba group). We still need another 4-5 persons to help us "lift off". So, if you are "lurking" out there, decide to join us and get to know more FERGUS folk in a joint effort. We need people who know more about computers/HTML/and stuff than I do! We need people who are willing to type information we will snail mail or forward to them! We need cheerleaders to root us on when we get bogged down and discouraged! AND we need each of you to search through your family Bible, grandma's trunk, and that box of old letters and documents! Yes, you see we need each and everyone of you. What if I just boxed up all of the FERGUS materials I have gathered and taped the box shut and stored it in the basement? Same-o, same-o if you are not sharing the wealth of materials you have. Tsk, tsk, come on soften up!d OK, be brave and post to the list what you can help with, or just that you would be willing to be willing. Hello, I just received a quick response to the posting on the Fergus Group from Racine, Wisconsin - seems that Bill Richards of Manitoba recognized that these folks belong to his lineage! Does anyone else find a connection? Let us know. See what can happen! Why not post some information for others to find you or for you to find them? Bill Richard's website has FERGUS listings which can be seen at: http://www.kenora.net/manitoba and he has another FERGUS newsgroup listed on this site to subscribe to. The more the merrier! In the "Pennsylvania Archives", Third Series, edited by William Henry Egle, M.D., Vol. XX, printed in 1897 there is a FERGUS listing that will be of interest to many on this list: FREEMEN Amount of Tax Francis Fergus, ........................2 .7 .1 Will someone please interpret this listing and return the response attached to this post? And, is someone able to translate the amount of tax to today's monetary value? Does anyone on this list have information they can begin to post? It can be a marriage license, a birth certificate, a tax listing, land grants, etc. All of these items need to be posted to the list. Is anyone subsribed to the list from this Fergus Group? Today I received a wonderful amount of information on a FERGUS line that were all born in Westry, island of Orkney, Scotland. I quote from the letter I received. "These generations of FERGUS were all born in Westray, at the farm just above where the first FERGUS came ashore. All were born in the same house, same bed. The farm house is now in ruins. John FERGUS being the last tenant moving to the other end of the Islae, took the bed with him. Now it's gone. Hello List! Tonight I received 2 separate posts only minutes apart - both with the same last name - I didn't know if I had received messages from a father and a son, 2 brothers, or cousins . . . well 2 brothers is the correct answer. Both are my 3rd cousins. And, their great-grandfather, John Franklin FERGUS was one of the gentlemen responsible for gathering the information for the orginial "Fergus Family History" book. The Pennell brothers will be welcome additions to our newsgroup. I am still looking for some knowledgeable "computer" people to help with our new Rootsweb FERGUS site - and will need to have a name to choose for the site! Send your suggestions to the list PLEASE! As listowner I receive these monthly updates on our host server for the FERGUS List. But, PLEASE READ THROUGH ENTIRE POST - IMPORTANT NEWS FOR US ALL! =============== ROOTSWEB IN JANUARY -- 85 Million Hits and 154 Million E-mails. Below are the detailed statistics January operations. We reached an important milestone: we've comfortably passed one million page hits per day. o 3,802 independently authored Web sites hosted by RootsWeb o 85,389,232 total Web hits: - 21,695,506 were HTML pages. - 13,857,814 were cgi-bin database searches and such. - 49,591,630 were graphics (GIF, JPEG, etc.). o 1,187,119 file downloads from the USGenWeb Archives and the ROOTS-L Library o 5,846 independently operated mailing lists hosted by RootsWeb o We shipped 154,184,249 pieces of e-mail to our mailing lists. ================= Additionally, we have been approved and accepted to have a FERGUS website at Rootsweb for research, statistics, information which is in the birthing stage. George Baumbach has offered to edit/author some pages. It was at George's suggestion that I found another family page, that of COMBS that he is also connected to, to see if this would be a better alternative than my present personal website. Rootsweb is! Why not take a visit to the COMBS page to see what the possibilities are for FERGUS. Visit: http://www.rootsweb.com/~combs/index.html dedicated to records, as well as family histories. FYI the Combs group is celebrating its second anniversary. They have published nearly 1,000 web pages of data, documents, interpretation, and histories. Approximately 100 members e-mail data to the list and share it with everyone for comment. Collateral families are included, not just the surname Combs. I am not even sure where to begin next, but with George's help we shall move forward. I would welcome any offer of assistance the mechanics of setting up the site - I have NO knowledge of HTML or even much knowledge about computers as I have only been online for 18 months. Please e-mail me privately and let me know if you would be available on your time schedule to help . . . YES, I do need volunteers to help the FERGUS site soar. Each of us has different gifts and I ask each of you to help in whatever way you are able. We seem to be gathering momentum as there are now 42 subscribers to the FERGUS list which began with only two of us, Shirley/Barney FERGUS and me. Jump in! Participate! Yes, I NEED YOUR HELP!
