    3. Much of the research material I am posting on the FERGUS Research Worldwide site has been acquired from PRONI (Public Records Office of Northern Ireland" the following statement is of great importance for our new website. If you are concerned about copyright issues please read this statement. C Russell "Copyright at the Public Record Office Guidelines for Those Who Propose To Reproduce Works Among Records Held in the Public Record Office >From 26th March 1999, the Crown will in future waive its copyright in Crown copyright material in public records that are available to the public and that were unpublished when they were transferred. This means that such material can be copied, indexed, transcribed, published and broadcast without formal permission, payment of a copyright fee or acknowledgement of copyright. The change affects not only public records in the PRO but also those in all places of deposit outside the PRO, the National Archives of Scotland and the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland. Material in private copyright, published Crown copyright material, and non-public records are all unaffected." ^.^.^. 1. New FERGUS Research Worldwide website up
    2. Cynthia N. Russell
    3. Hello all FERGUS researchers, relatives, and friends! It was not my intention to have the new website be launched prematurely, but apparently John Fuller who searches out and obviously finds new genealogy websites has discovered ours. Webmaster and fellow FERGUS researcher, Bill Richards, has been working tirelessly to write the information in computer language - which is definitely beyond me. Bill has put in many hours and spent time e-mailing plus chatting on the phone to begin with a rough draft, and now to fine-tune the site. He and I had hoped to have it be more complete before the announcement, but apparently that was not to be. There are many pieces of the outline in different stages of being birthed - so please be patient AND kind. Do take a visit, look about, and please wait to post ANY e-mails either to Bill or me so that we have time to complete this work. As most of you already know I am leaving for Belfast 2 weeks from today and I am still sorting the papers I will need to take along for the 3 weeks of research and travel there. I will not be replying to any queries until after May 25th and then they will be in the order in which they are received. Since I will be away I do not want posts adding up in my mailbox. And, Bill will be working on things already in progress. During this next 6 weeks why not gather your information together for us to begin to post. You will need to look about the site and find the Chapman codes for all the states (U.S.), counties (CA, UK, SCT, IRE) and translate your material into that format. For those of you who are listed in the redbound "FERGUS Family History" book you will not need to send in your information as Earl Crosby of Dayton has graciously already updated and input that information. BUT, if you have not sent Earl new information on Births, Deaths, or Marriages THIS WOULD BE THE TIME TO DO THAT. Earl's e-mail address is listed in the Cc: of this post. Now, I want to STRESS, EMPHASIZE, and will REITERATE that absolutely NO persons living will be posted to this site without their EXPRESS approval. That means that you will need to ask each person - not their husband, not their wife, not their mother, and not their father, or ANYONE else for that matter. Yet, parents of children under the age of 21 may give approval for their children. It is of utmost importance that people's privacy be maintained! You will notice that I have posted my own birth information - with only the year, not the actual month and date . . . and only the state in which I was born, not the town or county. All posts of persons living will be in this format. Please help us out in this matter. We'll be posting information to the website in this regard. Since Bill and I are still in the "construction" process please do not send us any suggestions, only corrections if you find one. Actually, we are pretty good at finding the errors. Yes, at a later date we will ask for suggestions and welcome your comments - just not yet please. In the meantime work away to get your information together to be posted. My best, Cynthia ^.^.^. 1. Re: Permelia Jane Fergus
    2. The Howards
    3. Cynthia has asked me to clarify Permelia Jane Fergus for everyone. She was the daughter of Frances Fergus and Laura Jane Wilkinson. Her birthdate is July 20, 1860 and date of death December 23, 1934. Permelia was married to Isom Cimeon Wilcoxson, October 28, 1896. Thye moved from Barren CO, KY to Harrison CO, MO shortly after marriage. They had four children, only one of whom lived to adulthood - my grandmother, Margaret Leah Wilcoxson Gorden, who married Earl Noah Gorden, my grandfather. Infant daughter November 18, 1897 Dec 22, 1897 Infant daughter February 18, 1899 Feb 19,1899 Margaret Lea August 12, 1900 March 7, 1986 Francis Willard September 22, 1903 July 3, 1910 Isom was given the nickname of "Egypt" though no one knows why. Permelia was known as "Aunt Minnie" and had a heart of gold. She was good to everyone with whom she came in contact. Always bestowing love and kindness on them, especially those who had been bereft of a mother. Her foster brother, Joseph Herron was taken into her father's (Frances) home when he was a small child. His mother had died and his father did not care for him. It was when Aunt Minnie moved up to the north part of the county (Harrison Co, MO) that Joe came with her. Aunt Minnie loved company and enticed them with a long table piled high with luscious food gleaned from her garden and poultry house. Near Christmas time in 1934, Aunt Minnie became critically ill and passed away on December 23, 1934. The death of his loved one was go great for Uncle Isom that when he developed pneumonia, he too passed away four days later. The above information was obtained from Jessie Eckerson, a relative via Joe Herron, I believe. Jessie continues to live in Eagleville, MO. There is a note also that when Grandma Fergus (I assume this means Laura Wilkinson) died, Grandpa Fergus (Francis) and Joe came to live with them in Harrison CO, MO. Laura Jane Wilkinson Fergus and Francis Fergus are buried in Dale Cemetery outside of Bethany MO. Permelia Jane Fergus Wilcoxson and Isom Cimeon Wilcoxson are buried in the Eagleville Cemetery near Eagleville MO. I do have quite a bit of information of the descendants. It is in narrative form and very convoluted. Being the mother of five teenagers (gasp) and working presently on my master's, I am trying to find time to get it organized, but intend to do that! Isn't it nice to read about Francis's generosity and Permelia's warm heart. Viva La Fergus! Lynne Gorden Howard

    3. Hello FERGUS mailing list, When I received the following message I decided that I would share this with you so that you know another one of the valuable services RootsWeb provides to all mailing lists on their server. It was brought to my attention recently that we do not want any virus information posted to this mailing list - and that is true, to an extent. However, as listowner I will monitor this subject and at times may decide that it would be in the best interest of all to post information of this nature. A while back another member posted information on the happy99.exe worm because I asked him to do so after he discovered I had sent it to him, unknowingly. Also, at the same time I had sent posts to each member of this list and wanted all to be aware of the possible infection without causing panic. OK, enough on this subject, moving back to genealogy! 1. THOMAS FERGUS & ELIZABETH ROBERTS
    2. Barney and Shirley Fergus
    3. THOMAS FERGUS. The Fergus family are of Scotch descent, John Fergus, the grandfather of Thomas, having been born in Scotland, where he was married. He came with his family to America, and settled in Huntingdon county, Penn., where he died. John Fergus had three sons: Thomas, John and Samuel. Samuel Fergus was born in Huntingdon county, Penn., and passed his youth on the home farm, receiving his education in the common schools. In early manhood he was married to Miss Mary Paxton, and the following children were born to their union: Hugh, Mary (Mrs. Andrew Hart), Margaret (Mrs. Thomas Maxwell), John, Martha, Thomas, Sarah (Mrs. Hugh Fergus), Jane and Nancy. He was a member of the Seceder Church at Canonsburg, and was an elder for many years. In politics he was a Whig. He died April 14, 1853, at the age of ninety years, and was followed by his wife February 18, 1861, in her ninety-third year. Thomas Fergus was born November 2, 1802, on the home place in South Strabane township, and received his education at the subscription school, which was at first held in a log cabin on his father's farm. The floor was of ashes, and the seats were slabs of wood supported by wooden pegs. They had no backs for the weary urchins to rest upon, and the chimney consisted of a hole in the roof. The fireplace occupied one end of the building, and the windows were made by removing a portion of a log, and covering the space with greased paper. The only textbooks used were the Testament, the United States Speller and the Western Calculator. But even with these meager opportunities, Thomas acquired a fair education. On May 3, 1831, he was united in marriage with Elizabeth, daughter of John D. Roberts, and to their union have been born the following children: John D., Mary, Susan (deceased), Hannah J., Maria, Isabella, Samuel P., Addison R. and Sarah M. After his marriage Mr.Fergus settled on the farm in South Strabane township now owned by Mr. Roberts, and resided there seven years, when he removed to his present home. He was formerly a Whig, and since the formation of the party has been a Republican, being actively interested in the political issues of the day. In religion he is a prominent member of the United Presbyterian Church at Pigeon Creek, to which he gives liberal support. Text taken from page 733 of: Beers, J. 1. SAMUEL P. FERGUS & MARY PAXTON
    2. Barney and Shirley Fergus
    3. SAMUEL P. FERGUS the well-known extensive oil operator, is a native of the county, having been born in South Strabane township August 17, 1843. He is of Scotch descent, the first of the family to come to this country being John Fergus, great-grandfather of our subject, who was married in Scotland, and emigrated with his family to America, settling in Huntingdon county, Penn., where he died. His family consisted of three sons -- Thomas, John and Samuel. Of these, Samuel married Mary Paxton, and had the following named children: Hugh, Mary (Mrs. Andrew Hart), Margaret (Mrs. Thomas Maxwell), John, Martha, Thomas, Sarah (Mrs. Hugh Fergus), Jane and Nancy. The father of these died April 14, 1853, aged ninety years, and the mother on February 18, 1861, aged ninety-three years. Their son, Thomas, was born November 2, 1802, on the old homestead taken up by his father in South Strabane township, this county. On May 3, 1831, he was married to Elizabeth, daughter of John D. Roberts, of that township, and the children born to them were: John D., Mary, Susan (deceased), Hannah J., Maria, Isabella, Samuel P. (subject), Addison R. and Sarah M. After marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Fergus took up their residence on Mr. Roberts' farm, where they remained seven years and then came to their present residence in South Strabane township. Samuel P. Fergus, whose name opens this commemorative sketch, was educated in the schools of his township, continuing on the home farm until the fall of 1861, when he entered Washington College, remaining there one year. He then enlisted in Company C, One Hundred and Fortieth P.V.I., in which he was, some time later, promoted to corporal, serving as such until the fall of 1864, when he was transferred to the Twenty-seventh U. S. Colored Infantry with rank of second lieutenant, being afterward promoted to first lieutenant. He served on the Potomac, and participated in the battles of Chancellorsville and Gettysburg, in which latter engagement he was shot through the right hip with a bullet, which necessitated a twelve-months confinement in hospital. His wound having healed, he returned to his command, and he was in the front of Petersburg, then at the siege of Richmond, until 1864, when he took part in the engagements at Fort Fisher, Fort Anderson, Wilmington, North East Station, and in many skirmishes; was in pursuit of Gen. Johnson up to the time of the latter's surrender. Throughout his service he was in the army of the Potomac, for some time under Gen. Terry, and toward the last with Gen. Sherman. After the disbandment of the army, his regiment was ordered to Wilmington, Del., where it lay ten months, he being a member of the court-martial held there. The regiment was mustered out at Columbus, Ohio, and our subject returned and resumed farming in South Strabane township. In the fall of 1874, he was elected, on the Republican ticket, treasurer of Washington county for one term of three years. Since the beginning of 1878 he has been engaged in the oil business. Oil was found in South Strabane township, where an uncle of his had lived, and he has been operating some wells there, besides several in other States. In 1888-89 he erected his beautiful residence on East Beau street, in the borough, generally conceded to be the finest in the place. On December 17, 1873, Mr. Fergus was united in marriage with Miss Mary, daughter of William Patterson, of Indiana county, Penn., but who died in April, 1876, her babe having been taking from her by the Grim Reaper the day previous. For his second wife, Mr. Fergus married, October 9, 1878, Miss Margaret L., daughter of Thomas Weir, of Somerset township, this county, and by this union there have been born children as follows: Thomas H. W., Hugh Earnest and Margaret Josephine, all three living at home, and John Addison and David S. L., both deceased. Mr. Fergus has been a member of the U. P. Church since 1870, and he is an elder in the same. Politically he is a stanch [sic] Republican. Text taken from page 311 of: Beers, J. H. and Co., Commemorative Biographical Record of Washington County, Pennsylvania (Chicago: J. H. Beers & Co., 1893). 1. Update: FERGUS Research Worldwide website
    2. Cynthia N. Russell
    3. Work is continuing on the new website, but it is not yet ready for launching. I thought perhaps you might be interested in receiving periodical updates. Subscriber Bill Richards is graciously working on writing the HTML and formating the website while I send him a zillion (well, not quite) posts and changes. Another FERGUS cousin, Tony Bertotti is going to compile, edit, and write the information concerning Rootsweb, our host for our website. This will include how to subscribe to the FERGUS list, where to find Rootsweb information such as the Rootsweb Surname List, and how to help keep Rootsweb providing sites like ours. And, I would like to introduce you to the gentlemen I have decided to call the FERGUS Fab 4: Earl Crosby, Jim Fergus (from OKlahoma), and the brothers Jay and Terry Pennell. They are all related and related to me! They are dialoguing about the issue of copyright of the information we post. Now, I know that this can tend to be a "hot" issue as all of us have our own personal opinions on this issue. But, what is of concern is that we will go to all of this work and then a fee-based business will glean our information to resell to others . . . of course, we want this information to be widely available and then who would want to pay for it. Not sure that we can avoid being "raided" in this fashion, but these gentlemen will study the "issue" and format a statement to appear on our pages. Then Vicki Jensen, another subscriber, is working on retrieving the FERGUS Archives files and posting them by month for them to be available on the website. All for now, Cynthia FERGUS Website http://www.traverse.net/people/crussell/fergus_family.htm FERGUS Newsgroup FERGUS-L@rootsweb.com Rootsweb Archives: http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl
