    3. Hi Fergus folk, Just had to let you know that I just made a find that surprised me. Looking for my missing McGhee gg Grandmother in Essex Co., New York today. Her husband, James McGhee's mother was Marion (Fergus) McGhee. They lived in Willsboro, Essex County, NY starting about 1825. Doing a surname search ran across Marion Fergus 1794 - 1876 it also said, "His Wife" (Right b date, off by 2 yrs on d date) Oddly, her husband wasn't listed, Alexander McGhee Sr. Her son,Alex Jr. McGhee was. Instead, the name William Fergus 1762 - 1847. Possibly her father, since his name was William. I had no idea he might have left Scotland. (Can't confirm the dates for him yet). The file was gilliland.htm titled Gilliland, Willsboro, New York Transcribed by Paul Rekow, 9/10/98 http://www.bestweb.net/~csmfox/essex.htm I queried the page master as to what Gilliland is or was. Probably a cemetery. Is anyone else researching this line? Patrick Andrus

    1. [FERGUS-L] Fw: Hey - Hello from Northern Ireland!
    2. Barney and Shirley Fergus
    3. Hello there y'all! Arrived safely yesterday. Drove today from Coleraine to Derry (Londonderry) to see if I could find any passenger records for FF - no such luck they all start in the 1800's. Tomorrow I'll be at the County Library in Coleraine to search the Irish Studies Library as I met the librarian at tonight's North of Ireland Family History Society - Coleraine Branch meeting and she invited me to search their records. Then, I will return to Londonderry to search all the LDS records they have there on Ireland without having to order them and wait and pay for them at home. I'll drive down to Armagh to stay at Roberta FERGUS Barron's there while I commute the 45 min. drive to Omagh where I'll DIG IN! and hopefully find the FF connection back one generation further! Pray for that to happen please! All is well - I tried to post to the list, but it bounced - so perhaps you will have to pass along my news if you don't see posts from me to the FERGUS-L. Must get some shut-eye, Cynthia

    1. [FERGUS-L] FERGUS mailing list growing!
    2. Cynthia N. Russell
    3. Hello! Before my departure on Sunday afternoon for Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, I am attending to "housekeeping" and maintence of the mailing list and the new FERGUS Research Website. There are now 50 subscribers to the mailing list! Just a year ago this time there was no mailing list and only George Baumbach had any FERGUS genealogy listed on a website. . . now there is a growing number plus the FERGUS Mailing List! Hip, hip, hooray! Remember, while I am gone Shirley FERGUS will be maintaining the mailing list. If you need any help be sure to send a post to Shirley bernardf@intrastar.net I thank each of you who has sent me a post wishing me well in my journey. I would especially like your prayers for a "fruitful" trip in terms of genealogy for all of the FERGUS'. Yes, I do research my lineage beginning with Francis FERGUS, b. 1752 and IN ADDITION I transcribe all listings of the surname FERGUS and variations for ALL counties in Ireland (the whole island). Hopefully, there will be new discoveries and breakthroughs in my research. Ready, Aye, Ready, Cynthia Russell ^.^.^. 3. The following will be posted to the new FERGUS Research Worldwide website for each of us to consider and use as a guideline. These standards have been developed as a benchmark. I encourage each of you to carefully read and consider the impact these could have upon our website. Cynthia Russell ^.^.^. N E W FERGUS Research Worldwide website http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~fergus00/ ^.^.^.^.^.^.^.^.^.^.^.^.^.^.^.^.^.^.^.^.^.^.^.^.^. ****Standards for Sound Genealogical Research recommended by the National Genealogical Society: Remembering always that they are engaged in a quest for truth, family history researchers consistently: -RECORD THE SOURCE for each item of information they collect. -TEST EVERY HYPOTHESIS or theory against credible evidence, and reject those that are not supported by the evidence. -SEEK ORIGINAL RECORDS, or reproduced images of them when there is reasonable assurance they have not been altered, as the basis for their research conclusion. USE COMPILATIONS, COMMUNICATIONS, and PUBLISHED WORKS, whether paper or electronic, primarily for their value as GUIDES to locating the original records. -State something as fact ONLY WHEN IT IS SUPPORTED by convincing EVIDENCE, and identify the evidence when communicating the fact to others. -LIMIT with words like 'PROBABLE' or 'POSSIBLE' any statement that is based on less than convincing evidence, and state the reasons for concluding that it is probable or possible. - AVOID MISLEADING other researchers by either intentionally or carelessly distributing or publishing inaccurate information. -STUDY carefully and honestly the results of their own research, and ACKNOWLEDGE all use of other researchers' work. -RECOGNIZE the collegial nature of genealogical research by making their work available to others through publication, or by placing copies in appropriate libraries or repositories, and by welcoming critical comment. -CONSIDER with open minds new evidence or the comments of others on their work and the conclusions they have reached. 1. [FERGUS-L] Communications Liason
    2. Cynthia N. Russell
    3. I would like to officially welcome and announce that Shirley FERGUS will be the Communications Liason person for the new FERGUS Research Worldwide website and the FERGUS mailing list. Shirley is an incredible lady who enjoys genealogy, people, and the gift of hospitality = the perfect person to be our Communication Liason person. Many of you have probably received a post or query from Shirley as she has been a FERGUS ambassador(ess:) since I met her on the Internet about a year ago. Shirley is married to Barney (Bernard is his "formal" name) FERGUS from Harrells, North Carolina. We discovered that we ARE cousins and share a common heritage from our g-g-g-g-grandfather, Francis FERGUS, and our g-g-g-grandfather, John Shannon FERGUS which makes us 4th cousins! But here we part ways as my g-g-grandfather is Samuel Raper FERGUS and Barney's is Alexander Marrs FERGUS. You will find Shirley searching for FERGUS e-mail addresses on search engines, gleaning names from the FERGUS Guest Book, and sending off general queries, all with the same purpose . . . to greet, to invite, to welcome, to find, and to enfold other people sharing a heritage with the FERGUS surname while looking under EVERY pebble. Yes, she is amazing! We could actually install a hyperlink to her titled "Ask Shirley!" on the FERGUS website, no just kidding. Do encourage Shirley with your posts to the mailing list - she loves to read them and will most likely correspond with you . . . but DO post to the list! The sun is shining in Traverse City today and I hope that it is shining wherever you are! Cynthia (5 days to lift-off for NI/IRE) ^.^.^. 1. [FERGUS-L] Research itinerary for Cynthia Russell, listowner
    2. Cynthia N. Russell
    3. For those of you with an interest in my itinerary I am posting it here so that you may follow my progress if you wish. Although this does not fall in to the category of strictly genealogy it will give you a sense of the research journey I am about to embark upon . . . yes! sometimes it is all right to end a sentence with a preposition! I will not be responding to any e-mails as I am preparing for my research journey to Northern Ireland again and will be departing one week from today with much research material to organize before that time. I always welcome messages from my family - so do send any messages knowing it will be a one-way communication. I shall return on May 15th. My itinerary is as follows for any who are interested: Depart TVC Sunday, April 25 Arrive BFS (Belfast, NI) Monday, April 26 Travel to Coleraine - remembering to drive on the left side of the highway to 1 hr. north of airport to stay with SERVAS host family I have visited before in order to attend the North of Ireland Family History Society -Coleraine meeting there, research in Londonderry for possible ship's passenger list for "my" Francis FERGUS Two night stay here. Travel to Hamilton's Bawn, Co Armagh to stay with the ever-gracious hostess, Roberta FERGUS Barrons and her grown/single son. Roberta responded to my first FERGUS query in 1997 and has hosted me for two prior trips and again has extended her hospitality although we have not made a FERGUS connection. She is a retired teacher who now is substituting and volunteering tirelessly in her nearby community of the city of Armagh - which is considered to be the ecclesiastical city of all of Ireland as there is both the Church of Ireland Cathedral of St. Patrick AND the St. Patrick's Roman Catholic Cathedral on opposite hills overlooking the charming city. From here I will commute the 45- minute drive to Omagh, Co Tyrone to hopefully find the documentation for two gravesites I believe to be those of the parents of Francis FERGUS. It will be a difficult transition for me to drive in to Omagh for the first time after the devastation left by a terrorist bomb last August. I had walked along the very same route and in to each small shop on my way to the bank at the top of the hill to exchange dollars for pounds, then crossed the streed and walked back to the library. A total of 29 people were killed in this reprehensible act which was designed to tear apart the Catholic/Protestant town - however, as I believe, God used this for His own good and it has instead solidified the town. One of my friends here is Bill McGrew who transcribed and wrote "Tombstones of the Omey" listing all gravestones in the 15 cemeteries within a 5-mile radius of Omagh - and it one of these listings that may "belong" to us. Bill (who is in his 80's) will be going with me to the nearby Cappagh C of I Cemetery to show me the site which I could not find on my previous trip there, even though I methodically walked and read each stone - so perhaps this will be one of the unreadable stones now as the transcription to publication process has spanned 10 years and lichen and human have destroyed much in that time frame. Travel to Bushmill's - 1 hr. north and east along the north coast to stay with SERVAS friends/hosts at the very entry to the Giant's Causeway (spectacular natural site!) and check on possible arrangements to stay at the Causeway Hotel for first 2 nights of FERGUS June 2000 Tour. Staying 2 nights with Helene, Phil (just received his PhD and seeking job in Dublin), and baby Oonagh (2 yrs. old). Travel the Antrim Coast line along the Irish Sea through the magnificent Glens of Antrim - beginning at the spectacular and remote Torr Torr Head>Cushendun (designed by the same man who created the charming Portmeirion, Wales)>Cushendall (stopping at the Glenariff Waterfalls/Park)>Carnlough (a magnificent small fishing harbour where I will walk along the quay watching the men repair and stack their nets> Glenarm (taking a foray to Maud's Ice Cream plant for a taste, of course)>Ballygalley (isn't this a wonderful sounding name?)>Larne (where there is a a bronze memorial statue of immigrants standing in front of this large commercial harbour from where so many departed for America>continuing on to Whitehead where I will again stay with a SERVAS family of 4 (Davey is a barrister, complete with one of those silly wigs for court - Jeni is a practicing physician - Eion, same as Owen is an active 7 year old and along with his older brother who is 9 years old asks all sorts of curious questions about the U.S. They are not at all interested in television as there are too many other things to interest them in books, games, exploring the sea in front of their 3-story Victorian home where they watch the sea lanes leading in to Belfast - and where the Titanic was launched and sent for trial. This is a very interesting family! Jeni's father is a retired Church of Ireland pastor and it is he who has give me the needed recommendation to access records in Co Tyrone - one cannot access church records without having a recommendation! Also, Jeni's background if C of I (Protestant) while Davey is RC (Roman Catholic). >I will commute to Belfast to research at PRONI (Public Records Office of Northern Ireland), GRO (General Records Office), the Linen Hall Library (a glorioius library from the 1800's, ascending well-worn wooden treads to find librarians who search behind chicken-wired cupboards for well-worn records. I will stay here for 3 nights. Travel to County Down to Strangford Lough staying with Rosie and Rob Davison (he was the General Secretary for the North of Ireland Family History Society - of which I am a member and the North American represen- tative) for several days in order to drive in to the Repubic to meet with a large FERGUS family living in Dundalk, Co Louth. Oh, my, in my usual style, I have rambled on and on - and written as I think - hope you are able to follow this itinerary. Now you will get a sense of my anticipation and excitement to be going. In the meantime take a visit to the new website which is only partially complete. Ready, Aye, Ready! Cynthia ^.^.^. 1. [FERGUS-L] Dedication/Foreword in reference to the redbook "FERGUS Family History"
    2. Cynthia N. Russell
    3. Hello again, Those of you who are related to my g-g-g-g-grandfather, Francis FERGUS are undoubtedly familiar with the black or red book titled "FERGUS Family History" written by Morris Freeman Fergus of Dayton, Ohio and John Franklin Fergus of Columbus, Ohio. I wrote: "Imagine what Morris would have done had he been online. His efforts were tireless and gigantic compared with how easily we are communicating . . . I do think of him and honor his and Uncle Frank's contribution upon which we are standing. Is there someone who could write a tribute to them for our new website? Perhaps one of you knew Morris and/or Uncle Frank or are closely related to one of them.? I know that there are other FERGUS' who are not related to our lineage who will be on the website too, but it is the impetus of these men that we have moved forward to collect and gather ALL Fergus information. I feel that Morris and John Franklin should be recognized. Who will step forward to write a tribute to one or both of these men who pioneered our FERGUS genealogy relating to Francis FERGUS? There is plenty of room so if perhaps several or many wish to write a tribute all will be posted - sons, grandsons, great-grandsons, daughter, granddaughters, and great-granddaughters STEP FORWARD please. Post your information to me. Fondly, Cynthia ^.^.^. N E W FERGUS Research Worldwide website http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~fergus00/ ^.^.^.^.^.^.^.^.^.^.^.^.^.^.^.^.^.^.^.^.^.^.^.^.^.

    1. [FERGUS-L] FERGUS mailing list and new website news
    2. Cynthia N. Russell
    3. Good Saturday! I was about to write good Saturday morning - and it is here in the U.S., but some of our subscribers are located around the world . . . welcome aboard Jim Fergus in London, England! I look forward to meeting your family in Ireland! There are currently a total of 47 subscribers to the FERGUS mailing list! I am not sure where everyone is from but I know that we have a subscriber from New Zealand, more from Canada, England, and I think Nova Scotia and Ireland. Let me know if you live outside the U.S. as I do like statistics and demographics. Last week I posted an announcement about our new FERGUS Research Worldwide site and I believe that I sent an incorrect URL - easy for me to become confused - as Bill Richards (who lives in Ontario, almost to Manitoba) is graciously writing the computer language necessary for the new site) and I communicate with hundreds of e-mails and many phone calls. Sooooooooooo, please be patient with us as we are still creating the new site which was unfortunately announced prematurely. You will see changes each time you visit this new site - make SURE to use your RELOAD or REFRESH button upon each visit to each page you visit. Since we are still looking for a non-commercial guest book Bill has linked the guest book from my other FERGUS site, FERGUS Family Worldwide. We don't want to miss anyone who would like to sign in. Also, Bill has created a wonderful FERGUS Group Sheet which will allow you to enter your family information on this site - it is not yet ready for use as Bill and I must be able to accept the information posted . . . just not there yet, so have patience. You will notice as you click about the various hyperlinks on the site that some will not have the correct information for the heading - again, part of the process of creation - we are aware of this and will eventually work through all of the snags. In the meantime enjoy the information that is there and wait patiently for the remainder. It would certainly be encouraging to each us if you would each post some tidbit or largebit of FERGUS information to the mailing list. More to follow, Cynthia ^.^.^.
