    3. Some of you may be interested in the information on PA found at this URL http://www.clpgh.org/exhibit/neighborhoods/oakland/oak_penna3.html There is brief historical information which impacted the state of Pennsylvania, a section on "How to Do Genealogy", and information on joining the Western PA Genealogy Society . . . which I am going to do to hopefully find some of those EARLY records that would relate to Francis FERGUS and his wife Mary McCORMICK from 1776-1790, the period in which they lived in PA. Take a look here! Cynthia

    1. [FERGUS-L] IRISH TELEPHONE DIRECTORY AND GOLDEN PAGES NOW ON THE WEB
    2. Fergus, James
    3. This new website may be of use to researchers. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to make a distinction between first and last names - in the case of Fergus this produces listings including Fergus as a first name. Still, it may be a good search tool. IRISH TELEPHONE DIRECTORY AND GOLDEN PAGES NOW ON THE WEB - Golden Pages Ltd today launched Ireland's first comprehensive online business and residential directory. The new website contains full details of business and residential listings for the Republic of Ireland and is available free at http://www.goldenpages.ie. The site was developed in conjunction with Telecom Internet acting as project co-ordinators. The Business Directory contains the entire contents of the Golden Pages for Ireland and allows users to search the database by business type, address or name. The new service also allows a combination approach e.g. What - Florists and Where - in Carlow. The search results provide the name, address and telephone number, as it would appear in the paper directory product. Fax, e-mail and web details will also be available as options. The site has the ability to search for businesses by street or location e.g.. look for a list of restaurants on Galway's Quay Street. The Personal Finder contains the entire telephone listings for Ireland. In order to find a person's telephone number all that is necessary is to input either the name, address or combinations of both. The new service will instantly display the name, full address and telephone number.

    1. [FERGUS-L] Fergus Line in Scotland
    2. karen
    3. I'm just new to this list, but it's already given me a couple good leads. Looking forward to finding more connections. Looks like my family has been in Kilsyth, Scotland (just northeast of Glasgow) for a long time. The Fergus name has been in Kilsyth since at least the 1600's, possibly farther than that. With repetitive names like Robert and Alexander, it's rough deciphering who connects with whom. Here is my lineage, plus some of the siblings in case anyone connects with them. All events are in Kilsyth, Scotland until Robert & Catherine's emmigration to U.S. in 1905. A couple of their children were born in Amsterdam, Ohio. Then the family moved to Cleveland, Ohio, where the rest of the line continues. (There are other Fergus's in the Cleveland area, but I don't know them.) Alexander Fergus (b. ?, d. pre-1851) m. Elizabeth Cleland (b. 1791?) m. 1816 son Robert (b. 1818) m.? Jean Goodwin, 2nd m. Janet Patrick? son Alexander (w/Jean) (b. 1843) m. Mary Meffen (b.1846) m. 1866 son Robert (b. 1875) m. 3. The following article is from Eastman's Online Genealogy Newsletter and is copyright 1999 by Richard W. Eastman. It is re-published here with the permission of the author. ------------ Subscription information: To subscribe to this free newsletter, send an e-mail message to the following address: listserv@peach.ease.lsoft.com The message title is unimportant. The first line of text in the message must have the words SUBSCRIBE ROOTSCOMPUTING followed by your first and last names. For instance, if your name is Jane Doe, you would write a message of: subscribe rootscomputing Jane Doe That is the entire message; nothing else should be in the message text. ----------- FERGUS DIRECTORY OF THE CITY OF CHICAGO 1839, by Robert Fergus, pub. 1876. In September 1839, The common Council ordered the revision and printing, in pamphlet form, of the Laws and Ordinances of the city. The work was tendered to Messrs. Rudd and Childs, printers, but they, not being able to find sufficient funds, offered to transfer the contract to the subscriber, who accepted and fulfilled it. There were six blank pages at the end, and Mr. Childs suggested the filling of them up with the names of the business men of the city, which was immediately done; no canvass was necessary, and the names were never written- each name, as thought of, was forthwith set up by the subscriber, until the six pages were completed. It never was supposed that the names of all the business men of the City. It was published as the "Chicago Business Directory" and 500 copies were printed, 50 of which were sold to the citizens at fifty cents per copy. The balance of the 500 were never used in public. This "Chicago Business Directory" was reprinted and the subscriber began to complete the Directory. In the compilation of this Directory, much assistance has been rendered by many of our old and intelligent citizens who later pronounce it complete. 1. [FERGUS-L] Online IGI Data Extraction Program
    2. Cynthia N. Russell
    3. I am not promoting the use of the following software information, but found it interesting since the LDS site has created quite a stir. If anyone on this list downloads and utilizes this program will you post your experience with the program so we may all benefit? This information was posted in Dick Eastman's Ancestry. com weekly newsletter, and quoted in below. "Online IGI Data Extraction Program It seems that shortly after anything good appears, someone else comes along and improves it still further. That's the way it is with the International Genealogical Index recently introduced on FamilySearch.org. The database is a valuable resource, but some people would like to have more reporting capabilities so that they can "mine" the data. Searching the database for a few entries of individuals is quite satisfactory, but anyone doing a one-name study may find the searching and reporting capabilities to be a bit weak. Dumping the records of several thousand individuals may take many hours, and then reassembling the data into a genealogy program or other database will take longer still. Colin Hinson in England has released Windows 95 software for extraction of data from the online IGI personal record files. There are two programs involved. The first searches the Internet Explorer cache looking for Personal Record files that have been placed there by the browser while the user has been searching FamilySearch.org. The program places these files in a directory on the "C" drive. Anyone not using Microsoft's Internet Explorer can also save the Personal Record files individually as they explore the site, but that method will be a lot more tedious. Anyone who tries to use Netscape will probably switch to Internet Explorer in order to save time. The second program extracts all the "important" data from the Personal Record files and then reads this file, producing a tab-delimited file. This tab-delimited file can then be loaded into a spreadsheet or database program. The second program will also extract data from previously saved Personal Record files and then copies them into the appropriate directory. In order to run the two programs you must have Windows 95 or Windows 98. The program's author also strongly suggests the use of Internet Explorer 4 or later. The program is still being developed. I didn't see the words "beta test," but obviously this software is evolving at the moment. It doesn't come with any guarantees or with technical support. It also does not have a money-back guarantee since it is free. Here is what Colin Hinson wrote on his web site: At the moment, it is free. Why? well, first of all it's not complete - it only extracts data from the IGI personal records, although it does extract the Ancestral Files from the IE cache and places them in a directory on the C drive. Secondly, it needs thorough testing by someone other than myself and a friend, so in exchange for testing you will get a piece of software which should save you hours, if not days, pasting from IGI files to spread sheets or Word processors. What are the guarantees on the software? Absolutely none! You will have to accept the software "as is". It works on my machine, and it works on at least one other with no detrimental effects, but I cannot guarantee that it will do the same for you. Does the software expire? The program which extracts the Personal record files from the Internet Explorer cache is well tried and tested and is probably error free and so has no expiry time. The program which extracts the data from the Personal Record files will expire after around 30 days. This is for your own protection. If a fatal problem is found, I have no means of contacting all the users. Updated versions will be uploaded before the current version expires. You can check for new versions by checking the version number of the version available for download against the version number of the one you have. Guarantees or not, this is an interesting package. You can read more about it and then download the software from: http://www.blunham.demon.co.uk/Yorksgen/software/

    3. Notice from Ancestry.com LDS FAMILYSEARCH SITE ELIMINATES 15-MINUTE ACCESS CYCLING <<<>>><<<>>><<<>>><<<>>><<<>>><<<>>><<<>>><<<>>><<<>>> ======================================================= Due to the overwhelming response to the new LDS FamilySearch site that was officially launched on May 24, a 15-minute access cycle was implemented. After the initial launch, the site was reporting 100 million hits per day and many people had a difficult time accessing the site. For more information, see: http://www.desnews.com/dn/view/1%2C1249%2C100003951%2C00.html To address the problem, users were given access on a 15-minute rotation cycle. Apparently the need for this "traffic" regulator has died down since then and according to Paul Nauta, a spokesman for the Church, "The access cycling to http://www.familysearch.org has been eliminated. Modifications have been made to enhance the service's capability and the number of hits per day seem to be stabilizing at 35 to 45 million with occasional larger spikes. Users should have no problem accessing the service at this time." You can access the FamilySearch site at: http://www.familysearch.org

Morrison, who came to Minnesota some time in the ‘20s, and was [p.471] prominent in the early history of the Territory. It was organized April 18, 1856, by the election of the following county officers: Commissioners, Wm. Trask, Elliott J. Kidder and W. W. Stebbins; register of deeds and clerk of board of commissioners, Nathan Richardson; judge of probate, James FERGUS; sheriff, Jonathan Pugh; district attorney, W. B. Fairbanks; assessors, W. B. Tuttle and John Fry. - -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----ROYALTON VILLAGE page 475 James FERGUS was born in the parish of Glassford, Lanarkshire, Scotland, Oct. 8, 1813. His parents were well-to-do farmers, and gave him a good education along with excellent moral and religious training. In his youth he was noted for his thoroughness in whatever work he undertook and his fondness for good books. At the age of nineteen years he came to America to improve his fortunes, locating first in Canada, where he spent three years, and learned the trade of a millwright. Becoming involved in some political troubles just before the outbreak of the Papineau Rebellion, he left Canada for the United States, and spent a couple of years in Green Bay and Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and at Chicago and Buffalo Grove, Illinois, going thence to Iowa, and thence to Moline, Illinois where he found employment in the machine shops and foundries of Buford, Sears &Wheelock. In 1854 he removed to Little Falls, and in company with C.A. Tuttle built a dam across the Mississippi and platted the village. He subsequently owned the site of Fergus Falls, now a thriving city, that has done well in assuming his name. In 1862 he drove his own team from Little Falls to Bannock, then in Idaho, now in Montana Territory. He became prominent in territorial affairs; was influential in the organization of the new county of Madison, and held many positions of trust and responsibility. He was the commissioner [p.475] appointed for Madison county served two terms in the Montana legislature, and was a member of the constitutional convention of 1887. At one time he lived in Lewis and Clark counties; he now resides in Meagher county, near Fort Maginnis, where he is engaged in stock raising. - -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----ROYALTON VILLAGE page 475 Mr. FERGUS was married March 16, 1845, to Pamelia DILLIN, of Jefferson county, New York. Mrs. FERGUS died Oct. 6, 1887. He has one son and three daughters, the latter married and living in Montana.
