from "Belfast Newsletter" 1781, page 303, Linen Hall Library, Belfast: ------------- Friday, Janry 5, to Tuesday 9, 1781 Belfast: Died: on 26th abt., at Springfield, near Ballynahinch, Wm. FERGIE, Esq., Capt. of the Kilmore Volunteer Company, aged 50 years. He weighted 42 stone 3 lb, and his coffin measured a yard + 2 inches across and 22 inches in depth ----------- I have a copy of this transcription if anyone wishes a photocopy. Cynthia Russell
I have a copy of the "Belfast Newsletter" dated May 7, 1824 that is on file at the Linen Hall Library. It reads: -------------- -MARRIED- At Kircaldy, on the 3d inst. Horation Spopforde Nixon, Esq. R.C. to Charlotte, third daughter of Walter Fergus, Esq. banker, Glasgow, and of Strabore, in the county of Fife. -------------- I have no idea why this marriage announcement appeared in the Belfast Newsletter as Kirkcaldy is one of the main towns situated on the east coast of Scotland. Perhaps Walter FERGUS was from Belfast originally. . . I retrieved this while searching through the various newspaper collections archived only at the Linen Hall Library, Belfast. I would be glad to make a copy of this if anyone on the list is related to Walter FERGUS. If so, please post your request to the list and share your lineage for the FERGUS archives. For those of you with this background, Scotch-Irish or Scots-Irish, or Ulster Scots = all the same reference, you may wish to take a visit here for some clarification of the term: http://members.aol.com/ntgen/hrtg/scirish.html The lineage of Francis FERGUS, b. 1752 Co Tyrone fits this category - he is my g-g-g-g-grandfather! I would highly recommend these free research lessons for help with your genealogy! ROOTSWEB'S GUIDE TO TRACING FAMILY TREES ("RootsWeb Guide") http://www.rootsweb.com/~rwguide/>. Lesson Four, "Vital Records: Death, Tombstones, Cemeteries" is now available at: <http://www.rootsweb.com/~rwguide/lesson4.htm>. Like the lessons before it, Lesson Four contains links to online resources that are likely to interest experienced researchers as well as beginners. Some "hidden" resources at RootsWeb and a virtual cemetery tour of the Internet are among the highlights.

There is a daily and a weekly free Ancestry Genealogy Newsletter. Some of the information is of no interest to me and some of it is quite interesting and educational. I subscribe to the daily newletter which also lists a free database of either information or maps which are normally available only to paying subscribers. There is a Table of Contents at the beginning of the newsletter so I briefly browse through the listings and either choose to read further or use my delete button. To sign up for the free newsletter at Ancestry.com visit: http://www.ancestry.com/ancestry/signup/SignupUser.asp?SignupType=Guest
I have just checked Ancestry.com for their free database of "Ireland Gazetteer and Surname Guide" (listings beginning of 19th century) and found no listings for the surname FERGUS. Hi Cynthia, My old drill sgt. usually reminded us that we should take 2 steps backwards when he asked for volunteers. Oh well, I have World Family Tree 1-12. Doc
Hello List, Today I finished printing out the indexes for the surname and will begin to now open each file looking for pertinent information. This will be a lengthy process and many are duplicates. In addition FTM is now picking up our posts with surname + given name listings as Internet Listings. I would like to ask if any of our subscribers have any of the Broderbund CD's for lookups. There is a website that lists volunteers who will look up 2-3 listings per day, but that would be a laborious process. I do have the CD numbers for the lookups and also the names. Is anyone willing to help with this project? It should not be time-consuming on your part . . . it is the compilation on this end that will be. Hoping to hear from all of you who own ANY CD's! Please respond to me personally along with the # on the CD(s). This will benefit everyone. Cynthia Russell ^.^.^.
