Dear Folks, I have been diligently plowing through the Census Index information posted by Cathy Kubly., the DeLORME Map Book for NY State, and Orlin P. Fay's book. Here is one family that I have identified. These are sons of Timothy FAY 5 [ZOPF # 156] 1810 FAY L. Ostego County NY 40010-10010 According to the preprinted form for the 1810 Census, this means that L. Fay had a wife, and 5 children under the age of 10, four boys and one girl, living with him. Of the two L. Fay, sons of Timothy Fay, the older one, Leonard Fay was married in 1801 and had 3-4 boys still alive by 1810. He may also have had some foster kids. The girl may have been a relative who lived with them. Lindzey Fay [OPF # 947] was the fourth child of Timothy Fay 5 {OPF # 156]. He was not married until 1809. Therefore, this is probably Leonard Fay in the above entry. He is the first member of this family group to be listed in Ostego County Census (1810). For the next two Census years, we have: 1830 FAY LINDSEY Ostego County NY 054 Ostego [947] 1830 FAY HIRAM Ostego County NY 055 Ostego [944-4?] 1840 FAY LEONARD Ostego County NY 070 Ostego [944] 1840 FAY HIRAM L. Ostego County NY 101 Springfield [944-4] 1840 FAY LINSY Ostego County NY 033 Exeter [947] In this batch we have Leonard Fay [OPF # 944] and Hiram L. Fay [OPF # 944-4], his son, as well as Lindsey Fay [OPF # 947] Note the variants of Lindsey, Lindsay, Lindzey, Linsy, and Linny. Keep in mind that that Leonard was born in 1775 and his brother Lindzey was born in 1785, a difference of 11 years. Hiram L. Fay [OPF # 944-4] was b. 1809, married 1832 to Sarah ALLEN, and d. Mar. 14, 1876. Hiram Fay [OPF # 947-1] was born 1811, married 1845 to Fidelia BALL, and died sometime after 1860. These two Hiram's are first cousins. This material was in Vol. 00, No. 64, X-message 1. We also find the following for : 1850 1850 FAY LEONARD Ostego County NY 010 Burlington [944] 1850 FAY RUSSELL Ostego County NY 247 Ostego [944-11] 1850 FAY LINNY Ostego County NY 033 Exeter [947] .....[Lindsey died 1857] 1850 FAY JOHN Ostego County NY 041 Exeter [947-3] 1850 FAY TIMOTHY Ostego County NY 036 Exeter [947-4] 1850 FAY HIRAM Ostego County NY 115 Milford [Is this one of our Hiram FAY's?] 1860 1860 FAY LEONARD Ostego County NY 415 Burlington [944] .....[Leonard died in 1862] 1860 FAY RUSSELL Ostego County NY 415 Burlington [944-11] 1860 FAY MARGARET Ostego County NY 415 Burlington [rel. UNK.] 1860 FAY HIRAM L. Ostego County NY 079 Springfield [OPF # 944-4] 1860 FAY HIRAM Ostego County NY 003 Exeter [947-1] 1860 FAY HORACE Ostego County NY 627 Ostego [947-2] 1860 FAY JOHN Ostego County NY 026 Exeter [947-3] 1860 FAY TIMOTHY Ostego County NY 038 Exeter [947-4] 1860 FAY LUCRETIA Ostego County NY 032 Exeter [947-5] [married Stevens 1863] 1860 FAY WILLIAM L.Ostego County NY 001 Exeter [947-8] This is from Vol. 00; no 74; X-message 1. Between 1850 and 1860, the families of these two brothers account for 17 of the 21 entries for Ostego County NY. By using less common names such as Hiram , Hiram L.., Russell, Timothy, and Horace, we can narrow down possible families in Orlin P. Fay until we have a probable match. Leonard Fay had 11 children, of whom 4 never lived to make a Census. They were Leonard Jr (1801-1804) ; Lorenzo (1811-1813); Peter (1813-1814); Byancy (1814-1817). Ezra (1860-1810) died in a Census year and may have been included in the 4 males under 10 for L. Fay. Ralph Fay (1804-?) left home in 1826 for New York City and the family lost track of him. Orlin P. Fay does give some information about those children who survived to adulthood and who were not living with this principal family group. See pages 74-79 of Orlin P. Fay's book. What the combination of OPF and the Census Index gives us is: 1. The probable person who arrived in Ostego County before 1810: Leonard Fay [OPF # 944] 2. The location of 6 of Lindzey FAY [OPF # 947]'s children in 1860. 3. The location of 2 sons of Leonard Fay [OPF # 944: Hiram L. Fay [OPF # 944-4 and Russell Fay [OPF # 944-11] in 1850/1860. 4. A new person named Margaret FAY living in 1860 with Russell and his father Leonard Fay in Burlington, Ostego County, NY. In order to determine the minor children living with each person listed above, and to determine who Margaret Fay was, it will be necessary to look at the actual Census microfilm or ledgers, if they exist. I hope this interpretation of some of the data which has been posted to the FAY-D-request list will be helpful to some of you in understanding some of the processes of matching up data from different sources. Sincerely Mary (FAY) Nelson 9
