Hi Karen, I apologize for this post in advance for not having better info but since you're in Sacramento so you're probably more familiar with this than I am here in Wisconsin. I hope other subscribers can fill in the details that seem to elude me right now. Perhaps 6 months ago I read a book published in the last couple of years about the sinking of the SS Central America in the mid 1800's. I can't remember thae name or publisher of the book, but I would think most libraries should have it. It explored in depth the lives of some of the passengers, sea trade between the east and west coast of the US, the gold rush, and the loss of the ship and subsequent efforts to recover the tens or hundreds of millions of dollars worth of gold that sank with the ship. The ship was recently found off the southwest coast of the US, and recovery efforts are underway. From time to time I hear or read something on the news about the progress of the various lawsuits associated with the recovery. And perhaps 2 months ago while looking up something in Orlin P Fay's genealogy of the Fay's of Marlborough, I noticed an entry for a Fay and the note that he was lost on the SS Central America. I can't remember his name and couldn't find it again when I looked a few minutes ago, so perhaps someone else knows who I am referring to. But he is one of your relatives too, and he may have had other family members in your area of California. Hope this adds an interesting little tidbit to someones search.
