Dear Fay, The book by Orlin P. Fay will probably be of little use to you, unless another Fay of his (John Fay or Marlboro, MA) line married into your Galway Irish Martin Fay line. Orlin P. Fay's book covers only the descendants of one "John Fay of Marlborough, b. 1648 in England." The book is rather expensive. A facsimile copy /reprint with index can be obtained from Higginson Books, 148 Washington St. PO Box 778, Salem, MA 01971. [978-745-7170 ]. It has taken some people more than 10 weeks to receive their copies. The Index leaves something to be desired as all of the John Fay's, William Fay's, David Fay's, (etc). without middle names are grouped together. You might try your state library system and see if there is a copy in a regional library in South Florida. Sometimes the colleges libraries or historical societies in the state have copies of either the original or facsimile copies. Your local librarian might be able to help you locate a copy just so that you can see if your line is in the book. Unfortunately, no one to my knowledge has done an exhaustive genealogy of the Irish Fay/Fayhe/Fahey lines. The Exact Reference is: Fay, Orlin P.[rentice]. FAY GENEALOGY: John Fay of Marlborough and His Descendants. Cleveland, Ohio: Press of J.B. Savage, 1898. You might be better off skimming the Passenger and Immigration Lists Index (about 20 volumes) by Filby. Many public libraries and historical societies have sets. If your local library does not have a set, your librarian can help you locate this Index set. This reference book gives one liners which refer you to the front of each volume. It is organized by Surname and Given name. Generally you find name, age, and year of immigration. The reference number is the next to last item per line. The page number follows it. The actual references for the Indexed material is in the front of each volume. You have to get that specific reference book to get additional information. You will find that the Immigration Records and Naturalization Records will give you about as much information as is known about these immigrants. Some of these records are in Washington DC. and some are in Regional Archives. My husband found some records for two of his grandparents recently. I don't know whether your Martin Fay was related to John Fay Sr. or not. There were a number of FAY's who went to London after several generations in the American colonies. There were a great many FAY's in England between 1600-1700. However, I have not had the time or money to go to England to really dig up the answers to a very long list of questions about John Fay's ancestry and the relation of the Irish and English Fay's. I do know from personal experience that a number of Fayhe/Fahey families changed their name to FAY after arriving in the United States. I have a collection of random bits and pieces on these families, but nothing like the genealogy on my own family. I will post the IRISH ACORNS address as soon as I find it. That group specializes in Irish Genealogical Research. I did not find your Martin Fay in Orlin P. Fay's book. I will look through what I have again and see if he is in another source. It will take a bit longer to tract any other references I might have as most of my Irish bits and pieces are not "input" into the computer yet. I will be glad to do a bit of looking up for you, but I do not have time to go to the National Archives until mid summer. Sincerely, Mary (FAY) Nelson 9 ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com
