Fay. I can reconstruct some of the names, but there is a lack of dates in this line. From Orlin P. Fay's book John [Fay 4], Stephen 3, John 2, & 1. He was b. Dec. 23, 1734, d. in Bennington,Vt. My grandmother, Mable Fay Herndon (of Sacramento) was sent to live with FAY relatives in VT for a while as a teenager (abt 1905). Would love to know more. I am also interested in the Greenville, OHIO and Joliet, ILL connection. Are there other FAY's in those areas? Thanks in advance for any help. 2. Fay List
    3. Good Morning All: All I have on the Fay lineage is from someone else's work, as it is not in my direct line but by marriage. "William Patrick Fay married Harriet Corbett in Moorhead, MN in 1898. William's parents were Edward Fay, born in Navan, Ireland abt 1839, and Anna Fitzgibbon born in Ohio abt 1841. Edward traveled to America with his widowed mother, (Bridget ?) abt 1847. Bridget remarried to John Otis in Kenosha, WI before they settled in Winona Minnesota in the early 1850's. Edward and Anna moved to Waseca, MN where he was a mail carrier on the route to Winnipeg, later moved to Moorhead. Pictures of this family and memorabilia can be found in the Moorhead Historical Center (Hjemkost Center)" Source: Mary Morley >morley@badlands.NoDak.edu< Another correspondent that didn't fit with my Fay/Corbett line that might be helpful is Mary Fay Nelson >mary.bob.nelson@worldnet.att.net< She referred me to a book by Orlin P. 1. [FAY] Other FAY Genealogies
    2. Fay List
    3. Hi Chris and Fay, I had mentioned that I thought there were about 20 other Fay genealogies, beyond the one compiled by Orlin Fay. I checked further and the real number is closer to 50, although some are small: a collection of Fay related families bibles for example. I am only familiar with the Orlin Fay genealogy, so I can't comment on the contents of these works. Perhaps others can. 1. For an Irish lineage beginning about 1000 AD see: Irish Pedigree; or The Origin and Stem of the Irish Nation by John O'Hart, 1923, Murphy and McCarty, 86 Walker Street, New York. Actually, this is probably the least help in terms of connecting an individual, but it provides an overview of the Irish Fays that may be helpful, and is interesting if you can borrow it. 2. The Follet-Dewey Fossett-Saford ancestry of Captain Martin Dewey Follet (1765-1831) and his wife Persis Fossett (1769-1849) by Harry Parker Ward, Columbus Ohio, Champlain Printing 1896. Half title:Follett-Dewey Fassett-Safford Hopkins-Robinson-Fay genealogy and history. This is in the US Library of Congress 3. The Fay Papers, by James Fay of Vermont. This is supposedly at the Vermont Historical Society. This may be the genealogy that Mary Fay Nelson is so skeptical about. I have heard that this was the lifes work of James Fay of Vermont and that it shows a descendancy from the Roman ruler Charlemagne. 4. The LDS collection holds 48 items which you can search at http://www.familysearch.org/search/searchcatalog.asp press surname search, enter FAY, select the desired entry to view notes on the contents. There are at least 3 Irish genealogies (2 Fahey, 1 Fay) here, two French, one German, and a number that are English, at least in part. There are North American Fay genealogies not only from New England but from many other parts of the continent as well. I was quite surprised at the comprehensive nature of their Fay collection. So, if official records fail you, and the John Fay of Marlborough genealogy is of no guidance, then there is always this wonderful collection. Beyond this, I would imagine there are other works in private hands. Bob Fay ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com

The intent to marry James BALL was filed 9 Feb 1754 in Westboro. James FAY BALL was born 15 Apr 1754 in Westboro. James FAY BALL went on to marry Abigail STARR d/o Comfort STARR and Judith COOPER. If anyone can give me any 'leads' or 'facts' I would really appreciate it. Thanks, Cherryl ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com

    2. Fay List
    3. Hi, Mary. I'm not a direct descendant of Apollos, but a half 1C5R of Lucy Hoisington (called Lucy Hussington in your e-mails). I am doing a one-name study of the Hoisingtons (my grandmother was Clara Alice Hoisington, b. 1898). I also host the Hoisington Mailing List and the Hoisington Family Web Site. I am sure that there are more closely related Hoisington descendants on the list, and I would be happy to post your information and your e-mail address so that they can contact you. I have Lucy's ancestry back to about 1675, which I would be happy to share as much of that with you as you would like. 1. [FAY] Irish FAY Reserach
    2. Fay List
    3. Dear Fay, The book by Orlin P. Fay will probably be of little use to you, unless another Fay of his (John Fay or Marlboro, MA) line married into your Galway Irish Martin Fay line. Orlin P. Fay's book covers only the descendants of one "John Fay of Marlborough, b. 1648 in England." The book is rather expensive. A facsimile copy /reprint with index can be obtained from Higginson Books, 148 Washington St. PO Box 778, Salem, MA 01971. [978-745-7170 ]. It has taken some people more than 10 weeks to receive their copies. The Index leaves something to be desired as all of the John Fay's, William Fay's, David Fay's, (etc). without middle names are grouped together. You might try your state library system and see if there is a copy in a regional library in South Florida. Sometimes the colleges libraries or historical societies in the state have copies of either the original or facsimile copies. Your local librarian might be able to help you locate a copy just so that you can see if your line is in the book. Unfortunately, no one to my knowledge has done an exhaustive genealogy of the Irish Fay/Fayhe/Fahey lines. The Exact Reference is: Fay, Orlin P.[rentice]. FAY GENEALOGY: John Fay of Marlborough and His Descendants. Cleveland, Ohio: Press of J.B. Savage, 1898. You might be better off skimming the Passenger and Immigration Lists Index (about 20 volumes) by Filby. Many public libraries and historical societies have sets. If your local library does not have a set, your librarian can help you locate this Index set. This reference book gives one liners which refer you to the front of each volume. It is organized by Surname and Given name. Generally you find name, age, and year of immigration. The reference number is the next to last item per line. The page number follows it. The actual references for the Indexed material is in the front of each volume. You have to get that specific reference book to get additional information. You will find that the Immigration Records and Naturalization Records will give you about as much information as is known about these immigrants. Some of these records are in Washington DC. and some are in Regional Archives. My husband found some records for two of his grandparents recently. I don't know whether your Martin Fay was related to John Fay Sr. or not. There were a number of FAY's who went to London after several generations in the American colonies. There were a great many FAY's in England between 1600-1700. However, I have not had the time or money to go to England to really dig up the answers to a very long list of questions about John Fay's ancestry and the relation of the Irish and English Fay's. I do know from personal experience that a number of Fayhe/Fahey families changed their name to FAY after arriving in the United States. I have a collection of random bits and pieces on these families, but nothing like the genealogy on my own family. I will post the IRISH ACORNS address as soon as I find it. That group specializes in Irish Genealogical Research. I did not find your Martin Fay in Orlin P. Fay's book. I will look through what I have again and see if he is in another source. It will take a bit longer to tract any other references I might have as most of my Irish bits and pieces are not "input" into the computer yet. I will be glad to do a bit of looking up for you, but I do not have time to go to the National Archives until mid summer. Sincerely, Mary (FAY) Nelson 9 ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com

    1. [FAY] Fay Lorenzo D.
    2. Fay List
    3. Dear Katey, Here is the only entry I can find on Lorenzo D. Fay in the Barnard, VT book. v. Robert [Chamberlain], b. Bd [Barnard, Vt], Apr. 17, 1823,: d. before 1894; m. Jan. 1853, Mercy E., dau.[ghter of] Lorenzo D. and Deborah (Richmond) Fay, b. [Bd], May 21, 1836. Lived in Franklinville, Iowa. (Newton, William Monroe. History of Barnard, Vermont with Family Genealogies 1761-1927 in Two Volumes. Vol. II- Geneaolgies, Burlington, VT: Published by the Vermont Historical Society, 1928: p. 113) I do not find him listed with the other Fay families of Barnard, Vt. There are a number of Lorenzo Fay's in Orlin P. Fay's book. However, they don't seem to fit your data. [OPF # 135-5] 5. Lorenzo [Fay], b. June 18, 1823. [Born in Ashford, CT] (OPF , 1898: 40) [OPF # 830-3] Lorenzo [Fay], b. Oct. 10, 1842, m. Elma Julianna Mead, b. Cato, N.Y., may 29, 1848. Fay's FAY Genealogy. I hope to get to Barnard, VT this year for my own family research and will let you know if I find out more information on him. 1. [FAY] Early Colonial FAY's Status Report
    2. Fay List
    3. Dear Fellow Cousins, The emigrant John Fay of Marlboro, Mass., was born in England. He emigrated at the age of 8 years, according to the manifest of the "Speedwell," which has been published with a photograph of the actual manifest page. This article is entitled "A LYST OF PASINGERS ABORD THE SPEEDWELL OF LONDON, ROBERT LOCK MASTER, BOUND FOR NEW ENGLAND" and it was published in the New England Historical and Genealogical Register, Vol. 1, April, 1847; reprinted 1992 by Heritage Books Inc. of Bowie, MD. This manifest is one of the few actual primary documents on John Fay. Most of the other sources on him were destroyed in a church fire. So far, I have not found a corresponding Baptismal record for our John Fay, but several people have contributed a number of leads in this matter. Orlin P. Fay cites four other early Fay's in the colonies. His information came from a John J. Fay. Richard Fay resided in Dorchester, Mass in 1634. Henry Fay, a weaver of Newberry, Mass, died June 30, 1655. William Fay, admitted a townsman of Boston, 1643. Thomas Fay of Hingham, Mass., died 1678. (OPF, 1898: 13) A "Thomas Fay brought suit in Es Court in 1638" (Pope, Charles Henry. Pioneers of Massachusetts: A descriptive List Drawn from Record of the Colonies, Towns, Churches and other contemporary Documents/Originally published Boston, 1900/ Reprinted by Genealogical Publishing Co. Baltimore, MD 1977: 162.) A Nathaniel Fay or Tay married Bathsheba Wyman/Weyman (b. Oct. 6, 1658) (Pope, Ibid, 517-518) Orlin P. Fay and Abner Morse were not able to clarify whether David Fay was or was not the father of John Fay Sr/1. The evidence is very scanty and rests primarily on a deed from Peter Bent. I have not yet found this deed. At least 30 FAY / FAYE / FEY / FEE / FEAY / PHAI (Soundex possibilities) men and women turned up in a search of the LDS files of England between 1600-1700, which was done by one of my informants. I have checked out most of these links in the English Parish Marriage Records, which were published around 1900. I found these records at the Clayton Library, a branch of the Houston, TX Library System. One person has published a report which is floating around that claims that the FAY Family goes back to the time of Emperor Hadrian of Rome. I would just caution you that I have not seen the original line of documents that supports this report, and until I do see the primary documents, I am not going to put this information into my files. I have some grave reservations about the quality of this report, since it seems to lack locations where the documents were found. Having studied European History in depth, I want to be sure that this data was not "made up" for the American genealogist. At least one English FAY Family is known to have lived in the area of Collingsbourne-Ducis, Wiltshire, and four generations of these FAY's are present in some unpublished manuscripts, which an English informant/researcher found for one of my other cousins. This material goes back to the 1400's. There is a line of Fay's in England, who come from this settlement, and who are still living in England today. One of my cousins went to England and found material of Thomas Brigham Sr going back to Holme-Upon- Spaulding Moor, Yorkshire. The line goes back to the 1400's. Thomas was the father of Mary Brigham, first wife of John Fay Sr/1[OPF #1] At present, it seem most likely that John Fay of Marlborough was an English boy of 8 who came to the American Colonies. I would be unsurprised to learn that he was indentured to Peter Bent. The name of his father is still in doubt and may be either David or William Fay. I hope to clarify this link when I make a trip to England in the next couple of years. The material in FENCES OF STONES: A History of Southborough, Massachusetts by Richard Noble (1991) concerning David Fay and John Fay is not documented as to source or location of primary documents. Several persons have attempted to contact Mr. Noble for additional information without success. So far, I have not found any primary documentation as to whether John Fay of Marlborough and his ancestors had any link to France. There are a number of English Fay's from the 12-14th centuries, but linkage up or down to these people has not been found. They are just isolated names in historical documents. Those FAY's who trace descent from John Fay Jr./2[OPF # 2] and his wife, Elizabeth Wellington, are probably descendants of King Edward 1 of England. A published genealogy exists of the lines of former Presidents George Herbert Walker Bush and President Franklin Delano Roosevelt which includes the above mentioned pair of ancestors. These Presidents happen to be cousins. The linkage between the English Fays and those from Ireland, Germany and Canada, has not been adequately researched. For many years, John Fay was claimed by the Huguenot Society as an immigrant from France. However, most of my recent research shows that he was English. The Compendium of American Genealogy seems to be the source of this flawed information. I have 3 published Fay Genealogies: Orlin P. Fay (1898), George Henry Johnson (1913); Mary (Smith) Fay (1987). I am also using the History of the Brigham Family by W. I. Tyler Brigham (1928). [The BRIGHAMS were a family which intermarried with the Fay family many times.] I have a number of individual town histories with genealogies (Barnard and Royalton, VT). These tend to give a very narrow picture of families in a given town. I have seen two unpublished manuscript genealogies on Fay's and have received several dozen personal family stories from other cousins. I have also used Farmer (1969); Savage (1873/1884); Torrey ( 1985) and Virkus (1978) for early emigrants. Cutter (1912) is not indexed, but had some information on the New York Fay's. I hope that this article will help some of you with your research. I will not be able to do any research/lookups at the National Archives until this summer, as I am in the midst of moving my household from Statesboro, GA to Bowie, MD. I will continue to answer as many of your requests in this FAY-D-Digest as I can find time to research in my own materials. It can take up to a full day to do a single request. Please be patient.
