    1. [FAY] Irish Fahey's
    2. Fay List
    3. Dear Listers, This is the relevant portion of a response I got from Pat Traynor, regarding Irish Fay/Fahey Bob Fay > Looks Irish to me...... FAHY, of Ulster: FAHY pedigree is on Page 445 of vol. 1, "Irish Pedigrees", by John O'Hart. Has a description of the Arms. Only about 13 ancient names in it, going up to about the 10th century. Fadhaigh; (fadh = "a cut"; ach = "a skirmish"); anglicised FAHY, FAHIE, and FAY. A branch off the O'Neill of Tyrone pedigree. There were 63 births of FAHYs in Galway in 1890. (Matheson) FAHY Fahy in Irish is O Fathaigh, probably from fothadh meaning 'base' or 'foundation'. Another, rare, English version of the name is 'Vahey'. Strangely, it has also been anglicised as 'Green' because of a mistaken association with faithce, meaning 'lawn'. The name still has a very strong association with Co Galway, where the historic homeland was situated. The area of the familys power was around the modern town of Loughrea in the south of the county, and the surname is still most plentiful in this area, despite the upheavals and migrations which have spread the name quite widely throughout Ireland. The best known bearer of the name was Francis Arthur Fahy (1854-1935), songwriter and literary man, who paved the way for the Irish Literary Revival through his lifelong involvement with the Gaelic League and the London Irish Literary Society. (Source unknown) ----------------- (I have no personal interest in this name) Patrick Traynor, in California's gold-rush country. ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com

    1. [FAY] Irish Fahey's
    2. Fay List
    3. Dear Listers, I have done some research and learned that there is an Irish line based on the name Fahey which is derived from an ancient Irish name, which is commonly anglicized to Fay. I received a letter that I'll post shortly on that subject. Perhaps the Irish Fahe is a variant of Fahey. Lest you think that an Irish Fay is thus a Fahey, there is at least one Irish Fay line going back to ancient times as Fay, and I am preparing a posting on that line of Fay's. And to further confuse the matter, there appear to be numerous Irish and English lines which go back to French Fay in Normandy as du Fay and de Fay. There also appear to be a few variants that may be the results of a mispelling of Fay as Fey, Foy, and Faye. As the subscribers to this list may have an interest in any of these lines, and as the names seem to get switched back and forth at will, I am subscribing this list to receive and republish the very few listings those lists get, in their digest format here. It should be clear where the posting came from so it should not cause any confusion and perhaps will help somebody solve some mystery somewhere. 3. Some time ago I mentioned that this mail list is archived. I was checking on this today and learned to my surprise that the FAY list was selected for the Beta test of a new enhanced version, which is great! It may require that you register for a password and I'm a little fuzzy on exactly how that works, but here is the other info. 1. [FAY] USA, Ohio, Magdelina Fay, born approx 1848
    2. Fay List
    3. ----Original Message Follows---- Hello to all. I am new to this list and hoping maybe someone can help me out. My Great-grandfather Peter Vacik married twice. His second wife's name was Magdalena Fay. (Alternate spellings of Magdalena that I have found listed on various documents are Magdelina, Magdaline and Magdeline.) My Great-grandfather Peter and Magdalena were married on 27 February, 1893 in Cuyahoga County, Ohio. She was approximately 45 years of age at the time they were married. Apparently this was also her second marriage. She passed away 12 January, 1918. She is buried in Harvard Grove Cemetery in Cleveland, Ohio. She was born 15 June, 1849 in Bohemia. Her fathers name is hard to make out on her death certificate. I'll get as close to it as I can. So here goes. His name was John Koboul or the surname could be Kobouh, not sure which yet. Still digging for that one. I believe she had at least one son from her previous marriage. His name was John Fay. He is listed on her death certificate which was issued in Cuyahoga County, Ohio. As per the 1910 census she resided in the Township of Newburgh, County of Cuyahoga, Ohio with my Great-grandfather until her death in 1918. If any of these names sound familiar or ring a bell for anyone (Especially the Fay's) please feel free to contact me. I am at a roadblock thus far. Thanks to one and all!!! 1. [FAY] Re: Copyrights
    2. Fay List
    3. Hi Everybody :) This message was posted earlier today by a college professor encouraging the respect for and proper referencing of copyrighted material from the internet. Please keep this in mind if you post copyrighted materials to the Fay list. Thanks, Bob ----Original Message Follows---- Hi, all, One of the problems I see with my college students (I teach at two colleges in California) is the idea (wish? desire?) that anything on the internet is free and can be copied any time they wish. Recently, one student sent me a copy of George Carlin's commencement speech from last year, "The paradox of our Time...", which I assume Mr. Carlin had the copyright for, but an internet search showed eight sites listing the speech and only one even mentioned Mr. Carlin as the author. Most of the other seven sites listed the author as "unknown" or "anonymous", which only confirms my suspicion that most internet posters don't bother to even see if the work might be copyrighted. By the way, one of the "unknown" sites was a radio news service site. So for me, the biggest problem with the copyright issue is education. I'm working with my students. Please do the same with people you come in contact with. Thanks. 3. Good morning all, Here's the obit for Dr. Dudley S. Fay as taken from The Plain Dealer dated 1-20-1992. I've sent a scanned copy to a couple of people already, but the list may also benefit from it. If, by some chance, someone else is researching Benejah Fay, and his offspring, I'd love to hear from you. A few weeks ago I posted the first few pages of a book which describes his earliest adventures in Parma, Oh. Due to my work schedule, I have yet to visit any of the cemeteries I mentioned looking for more offspring. Unfortunately, I'll be traveling off and on for the next couple of weeks for work. 1. Re: [FAY] What about a soundoff?
    2. Well, I saw it on VTWINDHAM, so you can look there to see how they're doing it. Great response so I guess others enjoyed its simplicity, as I did. That would be a rootsweb list- VTWINDHAM SOUND OFF, VTWINDHAM-L@rootsweb.com I tried to send you a link/forward but this thing keeps telling me "that mail in not currently available" ?? Wind chill is -40 here in Western NY today, maybe that effects the lines, beats me. I also see that Bob has sent me a few e-mails on the subject, but I'm not able to open them right now. I would have liked to read them before getting back to you. I checked with rootsweb to see their policy/advice on the privacy issues of including living persons info on gedcom files, etc. They use the 100 year rule. If a person hasn't been dead for 100 years they don't include the info as it has upset some living relatives in many cases. I expected that. Like the 72 year policy on the Privacy Act. I do wish to have my line included for posterity, so left the info with Mary Fay Neslson for her database. That's different than just giving it to everyone, or it should be. I'm excited to see the website. I know you've put a lot into it. Thanks! Holly

    1. [FAY] USA, Abraham Fay 10 July 1788
    2. Fay List
    3. According to Orlin P. Fay's book, page 338, Abraham Fay, son of Abraham and Abigail (Martin) Fay married an Abigail. Who is this Abigail? Is this Abigail Godfrey Macomber born 17 June 1792 in Taunton, Bristol County, Massachusetts died 21 August 1883? According to my records she married a Fay (given name unknown) and had Lury Ann Macomber Fay born 29 December 1811. Abigail Macomber married again about 1813 to a Stevens and 2 March 1831 to Ephraim Heselton. Lury Ann Macomber Fay is my ancestor and married Alfred Sawyer. David L. 1. [FAY] Re: Soundoff / RollCall
    2. Fay List
    3. Hello Everyone... I am one of the people who got onto this list "by surprise", but stayed on anyway... you never know, right? Given that this is a surname list... thought the "idea" of a roll call might be a good time to come out and introduce myself... tell you about the FAY interests I have... and hope to hear about all of "you" too. (then pray for intersections or leads!). Some folks reply "to the list" (nice, since all can see it...) and some reply via private e:mail to the poster. I've found that some (if they got a lot of private e:mail) will post a "summary" to the list... and thus all can benefit, learn of research options and possibly connect as well. That said... I am really here "in a little way".... My primary research interest that lead me to the FAY name was my PRATT family research. (They came from ENG into MA - then to southern VT - then northern VT - then western NY - with a few running over to MI). If I add in the colateral (sp?) lines.. I add a few more states! :-) My FAY interests are: >> Bathesheba FAY b 01 Jan 1692/3 in Marlborough, Middlesex Co, MA m. John PRATT 04 Jan 1715/16 in Marlborough (he b 1691 in Sherborn, MA & d 1768 in Bennington, VT) (son of John PRATT and 3rd wife: Ruth Stimpson) d. __??__ in Bennington, VT I see Bathsheba FAY as the daughter of John FAY and Elizabeth WELLINGTON --- and this John FAY as the son of John FAY and Mary BRIGHAM. Also, Bathesheba FAY's sister - Eunice FAY -- married Bathesheba's husband John PRATT's brother -- Isaac PRATT. debbie in california CAhobbies@aol.com ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com
