John J Fay, father Mother unknown children: Mary Ellen Fay Jane Fay Rosa Fay Francis Fay Charles Fay ********************************************************************** The following article was sent to me a couple of months ago by a historical researcher in southeastern Wisconsin, and deals with John J Fay from New York. This is a family that I'm personally interested in as well. 3. >snip-routing info< From: Pat Connors <nymets11@pacbell.net> Date: Wed, 26 Jan 2000 15:52:22 -0800 According to John Grenham's "Tracing Your Irish Ancestors", the GV was done for everyone in Ireland, including Dublin city. Since I have found people on the index from Dublin city, I guess he is right. Since the Valuation entries were subsequently revised at regular intervals, it is often possible to trace living descendants of those originally listed in the GV. These are called the "Canceled Land Books" and "Current Land Books" and they can be viewed at the Valuation Office in Dublin. Please refer to the url I sent a few days ago: http://www.valoff.ie/ for more info and this wonderful resource. It is thus conceivable that one of Frances's daughters, if she married a FAY, might name one of their daughters Nancy Wing FAY. I have one or two other Wing's in the OPF book, if this family does not fit your information. Look at numbers 6 and 7 for which no other data was given. The Spooner Genealogy was written before 1898, as it is one of the few references given by Orlin P. Fay. Please let me know what you find out about this family, as the ones I am posting are all descendants of John Fay Sr/1 (1648-1690). I am very interesting in learning more about your WING Family. 3. >snip-routing info< Date: Tue, 25 Jan 2000 07:46:20 CST Hello! I am new at this, so forgive me if I do this wrong. (just let me know). My name is Tina Marie Anderson. I am researching my family line on my mother's side. I have found out very little...(they don't even know if they're Irish, English, or Martian!!!! I would love to tell my kids a little about their heritage. So far I have found out that my grandpa Fay's father was Albert Jenner Fay (b.1892-d.1970)and was married to Florence Brown. They moved from somewhere in Ohio to Carlton, Michigan and had 9 children. Albert's father was Daniel Fay. All I know of him so far is that he married Eliza Mosebar in 1887 and he died in 1936. They lived somewhere in Ohio. I do not know where they came from before that. My grandparent's lived in Belleville, Michigan when I was small. They used to own property in Higgin's Lake, Michigan where a lot of Fay's live and own businesses. There was a rather large Fay family reunion the summer of 1992 close to Higgin's Lake. (at which time I wasn't researching this and therefore missed out on the opportunity of a liftime) If anyone has info, I would definitely dance the Samba on the back of a wild boar!!! Have you contacted the Ashtabula County Gen Society or the Ohio Historical Society to see if either of them may hold copies of birth, death or marriage records for Nancy, her husband or any of their children? I am a member of both societies. An have found them both to be extremely helpful in my own family research. They both have web sites. An you can post lookups for info from each of their sites. The cost for posting a lookup or request for info is very nominal. The most I have paid is $5.00 and that was for a census lookup. Hope this helps. 3. Hello, This might be a long shot but, I have been wondering about a Fay Couple for a long time. There was a will in Staten Island mentioning leaving part of the estate of a VanPelt, to a Grandson . It said John Fey or Foy. Was illegible. Elizabeth VanPelt married Stalham Wing. He was from VT. They moved to Toledo OH. Around 1850 they moved to CA. Stalham's brother L.B. Wing was a trustee for Ohio State University in Newark Oh, and his other brother lived in Bloomfield OH. After moving to CA, the Wings attend a small wedding in Oakland, The bride being a Watson the groom a VanPelt. Only relatives attended and yet there was a Mr. And Mrs. William Fay. I have always been puzzled by this. This is why I joined the Fay List. Only Stalham and Elizabeth moved to CA. The brothers stayed in OH. Since you have a Fay and a Wing I wonder if there is a connection. Also if you join the Wing list they are very helpful. The Wing family is well researched. 1. [FAY] FAY, George Washington, b. 1823/d. 1896
    2. Mary F. Nelson
    3. Dear Fellow Researchers, I have just been to the National Archives where I found the Military Pension Records for George Washington FAY 6, and later the one for his widow, Nancy Betsey (Robinson) Fay. In the Affidavits (legal papers with statements about people), there was one from the minister who had married them some 40 years previous to Nancy's application for a widow's pension. I also found papers from two witnesses to their marriage and several from people in Wisconsin who had known them for a long time. I also found out quite a bit about the problems of my great grandfather's health that had been acquired during the Civil War (Malaria, stomach problems, and a stroke of lightning.) I also photocopied his Military Service Records. In June of 1999, we went to Menasha and Neenah, Wisconsin, to do some research for him. We found the FAY family plot in Neenah's Oak Hill Cemetery. Adjacent to the FAY plot was a single stone for Amos Robinson Jr. and Lois Safford, his second wife. Amos Robinson Jr. was the father of Nancy Betsey (Robinson) Fay. I had not expected to find Amos Robinson Jr. in that area, although several of his sons were Civil War Veterans from Menasha and adjacent towns in Winnebago, Co, WI. I am slowly building a file for my great grandfather. I have several regimental histories of the 32nd Wisconsin Infantry. I now have his Military Pension Records and Military Service Record. I know which of my cousins has the original diploma which he received from Dartmouth College of Medicine. I have some photographs of him, his wife, and her twin sister, Betsey Nancy (Robinson) Clark. I just want to encourage you to look beyond the internet for material on your FAY ancestors. I have found out more about my great grandfather by going to the places he lived than I ever got from the History of Royalton VT by Evelyn M. Wood Lovejoy (1911), where he and his 12 older siblings are listed. Sincerely, Mary (FAY) Nelson 9

    1. [FAY] FAY, George Washington, b. 1823 V/.d 1896. SD
    2. Mary F. Nelson
    3. Dear Fellow Researchers, For a change I am putting out an inquiry. I am trying to find my closest cousins who are descendants of George Washington Fay, born 1823 in Royalton, Vermont and his wife Nancy Betsey ROBINSON, born 1824 in Royalton, Vermont. They moved to Fond-du-Lac, Wisconsin in 1848/49 and then moved to Menasha, Wisconsin in 1850. Dr. George Washington Fay was a Surgeon in the 32nd Wisconsin Infantry and served during most of the Civil War. He was also a Land Agent as well as a doctor. George Washington Fay died in May of 1896 in Huron, South Dakota, and was buried in Neenah, Wisconsin. Nancy Betsey Robinson died in 1901, I think. One of his sons, William Martin Fay was born in Huron, S.D. in about 1862. William married Miss Jeanne Louise WUILLEMIN in 1911 in Elgin, Ill. They had one son, my father, Richard William Fay. I have found the descendants of Charles J. Fay SR. Two of his great granddaughters are living in Wisconsin. Now I am trying to find the families of Ida May FAY who married Lorenzo Jones, and the family of Anna Webster FAY, adopted daughter of G.W.Fay, who married William Oscar Schmidt. My grandfather and his wife are buried in Elgin Illinois. Most of the rest of the family is buried in the Oak Hill Cemetery in Neenah, Wisconsin, near Menasha, WI Some of the names that I am looking for are: Henry Isherwood, Robert Isherwood, Fay Isherwood Harry E. Jones, Sadie B. Jones, Charles Loren Jones James Fentrie, Mary Fay Fentrie, Gordon Fentrie Marguerite Jones, Laura Jones William J. Griffin, Lucile Griffin, Irene Griffin, Ida Fay Griffin Dorothy Schmidt My Dad died in 1972 and we lost contact with these cousins. He had a specific request of me before he died, and that requires that I find all of the above people or their kin. Your help would be greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Mary (Fay) Nelson 9

    1. [FAY] Beginning a Research Notebook
    2. Mary F. Nelson
    3. Dear Fellow Researchers, I would like to suggest that each of you, who are new to genealogy, begin a research notebook. You will take this notebook with you to the library and to family gatherings. It gives you a hard copy of the information which you have collected, in the event of a computer crash. I use a zippered snap notebook for my immediate family. It takes two of these notebooks to contain just the immediate line. I put in sectional dividers between each individuals information, with each name on the appropriate tab. I put the entires in according to Ahnentafel order. Then I used the workbook THE UNPUZZLING YOUR PAST WORKBOOK, by Emily Anne Croom (1994), to reproduce the basic forms which I needed. Permission is given to reproduce the forms for personal use. There are other genealogical form books around, but this is what I use. Just to start, I reproduced about 50 of each of the following forms: Map, 5 -Generational Family Tree, Ahnentafel (2 pages)l Biographical Outline(2 pages), and Census Index. For those persons in the military, I did a Military Service Index Sheet. A copy card from a local Office shop gives me copies at 5 cents per page. I buy in quantities of 500 at a time and use the card when I need it. [self, husband, parents (2), grandparents (4); great grandparents (8); great great grandparents (16); siblings (2 plus spouses 2), in-laws (12) etc.] I also made copies of the individual Census forms by year and put the relevant years into each individual's section. This means I was ready to go look up Census Microfilms at a big research library. Then, I began to fill out a set of forms for myself, my husband, my parents, my siblings, my grandparents, etc. and back to John Fay Sr/1. I put in copies of vital documents such as my birth certificate, marriage license, and a list of the places where I have lived after the forms which I copied. It was a good thing I save some of my old checks for the old phone numbers and addresses. I have moved around a lot. I also put in an old copy of an employment form I kept some years ago, for a list of my early jobs. For my maternal grandparents, I xeroxed the WEDDING Memory book (guest book and marriage certificate in this gem), and a clipping for a newspaper, without date or name of paper, which gave the address and description of the wedding. I put a copy in each mentioned person's section of my notebooks. I also put a copy of the relevant pages of Orlin P. Fay's books, as I don't like to haul those two volumes around. I also included other copies of Fay research notes in the front of my notebooks, if they covered more than one person. By filling out the forms for myself and my immediate family, with the help of the directions in the above mentioned book, I was able to learn how to use forms correctly. I also learned how to read documents. I also put a reference to each source I used on the back of each sheet in my notebook. I would like to suggest that each of you stop in the mad scramble for ancestors and take a week to start your own research notebooks. One of the biggest and saddest mistakes in genealogy is to hunt for ancestors without providing a good notebook for ones descendants to use later. It would be a good thing to learn the "jargon" of genealogy as well as finding older and older ancestors in your line. Yes, your genealogical computer program will print out stuff, but do you really know what you are putting into it? I have some difficulty in decoding the messages that some of you put on the FAY-D-Digest, simply because you have not done you own research pages before jumping in with both feet or head first. I look forward to trying to help each of you, but it does take about a day to do a single entry, even if I can find the material for you on the FAY Family Data Base, which is my own program. Sincerely, Mary (FAY) Nelson 9

Please take a look and let me know what you think. PLEASE send me any corrections or additions to the file, I would really appreciate it. I do have sources for lots of this information but I have only been doing this for a year and was unaware just how important they were when I started. I am in the process of adding these to my file. When I am happy with them I will create reports that include the sources. 1. [FAY] Fay Researcher Website
    2. Fay List
    3. Hi Everyone, ?B-) Some may remember that a while back I said that the Fay mail list has access to unlimited Internet accessable computer capacity. Shortly after that Linda Fay Kauffman sent me a note regarding developing a website for the subscribers of this mail list. Linda's employment involves html and ftp which are computer codes used to develop websites, and she is exceptionally talented in this field. Since then Linda has devoted an enormous ammount of her free time, energy and rsources to developing a website that will be useful to all Fay researchers. As best I can determine, the Fay surname goes back before 1000AD, originated in France and often appeared as de Fay or du Fay. There is a compeletely different origin of a completely different family that originated in ancient Ireland and often appears as Fahey, but is often changed to Fay. Hundreds of years ago and since then, the Norman branch has migrated worldwide and most prominately in England, Ireland, Germany, North America, and likely many other places that I am not aware of yet. Likely the Irish Fahey's did likewise. Fay research thus tends to be vry confusing. So Linda had the unenvable task of developing a website that is specific to Fay research, but has a tremendous potential span in terms of time and geography. While the website is not really considered to be complete, if indeed there is a such a concept in websites, it is ready for everyone to have a look and see what you think. Check and enjoy http://www.fayfamily.org ! The "books" page and the "mail list" pages are the most well developed at this point, but Linda would like to know what everyone thinks and of course suggestions for improvements! I think it's wonderful! Enough for now, Bob Fay ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com
